1. You may already have checked here....the East Los Angeles County Library has a collection of newspapers on CD. You might contact them to see if they have any of these specific papers. http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/rsch-EastLA.htm 2. Regarding yearbooks, you might check Karla's excellent yearbook website: About once a year I remind the researchers of Southern California families to take a look at this web site (url below): www.4dw.net/socal Search for your parents or grandparents in the yearbook listings. All classes listed are at least 50-years-old and all are from Southern California. No ads and strictly non-profit. Hope you find your ancestors. I was born at 1318 So. Herbert St. in 1934. A few blocks east of the Los Angeles eastern city limit of Indiana St. The neighborhood, unincorporated, between Los Angeles and Montebello, was called Belvedere Gardens. The local newspaper was the E.L.A. Tribune, and E.L.A. Gazette. Each published once a week, and out of the same building. I don't know if they still exist, nor where their back copies may exist somewhere on microfilm. Does anyone know? I attended Eastman St. school, Stevenson Jr. High, and Garfield High School, class of W'53. East Los Angeles College majoring in history, then into CalState LA into the 3rd year when I made a life goal change. I ended up owning a 7-Eleven at 105 N. Vincent in Covina from 1980 to 1989. I retired at age 54 in '89. I spent the years between 1960, and 1970 driving the blue Montebello Municipal Bus while trying to get through college. I had a friend, Francis Theriot, who was an expert in ELA history. He was born in 1915, and spent his entire life living there and in Montebello. His entire career was "milkman" delivering dairy products to homes. The dairy was/is on Bluff Rd. in Montebello, next to Rio Hondo river. Among the things he told me was that Whittier Blvd. was originally Stevenson Ave., and was an unpaved dirt road at one time. Alas, he has died. I wish I had corresponded, and talked with him more. He graduated Garfield High in 1933. Isn't that the case far too often? I'd love to see a picture of my mother Grace Crist in a Stevenson Jr. High yearbook for 1927 (?) '28, and '29. Karla - I've not been able to get this link to work. Anyone else have this problem, or just me? Joan www.4dw.net/socal Karla in Bakersfield
Joseph - would please check for a new website addy and send it in? Man of us can not access this one - Joan On Oct 15, 2008, at 9:02 AM, Joseph A Antunez wrote: 2. To all, The web site has been down for three weeks and it looks like it won't be coming back on line. The web hosts are not responding to my e-mails and they haven't billed me for eight months - that probably should have been my first clue . . . I'm searching for a new host now, but I'm pretty dumb about this stuff so don't really know what I need. If I could find one that advertises "simple sites for simple people," I'd know that was the right one for me. Most seem to be geared toward small business and I only need the basics. I'll be able to reconstruct most of the pages, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to match my saved images with names, so may not include photos in the beginning. Somewhere in the garage is a box with copies of the individual school pages. If I ever find that box, I'll be able to upload images to the pages with assurance that I have the names correct. Most of the yearbooks are gone; sold, given away or donated to historical societies. I have quite a few here which have not been transcribed yet, but it will be a while before I can get to them. I'm sorry about the information being lost. I should have transferred to another host ages ago, but assumed it would require learning something new so put it off. I'll let you all know when the site becomes available for viewing. okay - I have set up another web site: www.socal-yearbooks.com It will take the rest of my life to change the urls on the existing links - but I have discovered that if you go the new site, it picks up cached (or is it archived?) pages from the internet. So, for at least a while, you can still read the old pages via the new url. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 18, 2008 10:32 AM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Socal Yearbooks web site > To all, > > The web site has been down for three weeks and it looks like it won't be > coming back on line.
