The death information on the Social Security Index is normally provided by the person filling out the form for death benfits. I have found several errors in the benefit request completed for some of my relatives. Ofter the person filling out the forms are inlaws or someone designated to manage the application process for death benefits. While we assume a person registering would know their own birthdate, but I have found Social Security data and the certificate of birth are not the same information. Clerical errors? Poor memory? Most of the Social Seurity data is correct, but they are not perfect. When we find discrepencies, we need to seek other records to verify if the information is correct or an error exist. Census data, school records, city directories, and where possible interiews other relatives or friends. But in order to be 100% accurate on that, you would need to purchase her ss-5 card application from the social security administration to see what she wrote down. Her last benefit may not have been claimed by a living person until that later year. > >The California death index record is probably closer to the correct death date because that form is filled out right after death to create the death certificate, but the person remembering when she was born, the informant, wasn't real accurate. Do you have any other records that would show a birth year or age, like a census record or marriage record? If you have the death certificate, it will show the burial information, mortuary, cemetery, or cremation info. You can also contact the company that prepared her remains for whatever took place there to see what their records have for her. > >Human error is also possible. The transcribers who indexed the records may have hit the wrong key on either of the online records. It just goes to show ya, that you have to take everything with a grain of salt and continue to try and get more records that she actually was alive to fill out. Even official records can be inaccurate. >I purchased my grandmother's ss-5 application which she filled out herself, it had her correct birth date and mother's name and place of birth, but the rest of the parental information was wrong. She was married to her 2nd husband at the time, used her 1st husband's father's information as hers. I had learned that her real father died when she was real young, she never knew him and she married her first husband when she was 15 yrs old.
