It's hard to believe but we're about a month away from Jamboree and it's time for an update. Deadline Alert #1: If you haven't made your hotel reservations at the Burbank Marriott, you will want to do that this week. We have blown the lid off our reservation block and so far, the Marriott has consistently accommodated our requests to extend the block. (Our contract was for 350 room nights -- we are already near 500!) But all good things must come to an end and the deadline for booking rooms is Monday, May 26. Make your reservations online or by calling 1-818-843-6000. If you have any problems making your registration before May 26, please drop a note to [email protected] and I'll try to help. Deadline Alert #2: We will take advance registration for Jamboree through June 15. What's the benefit of advance registration? --You don't have to wait in line to have your registration processed at the conference. --You get to wear an official printed name tag. --You can purchase tickets for the many social events. Seats are still available for the Friday night banquet with Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak; Saturday Effective Society Management breakfast and panel discussion; Saturday evening's dinner with Dick Eastman; and the Sunday morning Presidential Genealogies with Chris Child and Gary Boyd Roberts of NEHGS. Reservations for the meals will close on June 15. Don't forget to register for the newly added events: - Hollywood Forever Cemetery, bus transportation and guided tour by the cemetery historian Karie Bible. 8:30am-12noon on Friday, June 27. Cost $30. - FREE Introduction to Genealogy taught by Beverly Truesdale 9:00am-12noon Friday, June 27. - FREE Kids Genealogy Camp taught by Starr Campbell, Hailey J. Campbell and Michael Melendez from 9:00am-12noon Friday, June 27. In addition, we have arranged with Lockett Tours for a "Slice of the City" tourist bus trip on Thursday afternoon, June 26. The tour is $30. Find all the details at http://tinyurl.com/59xjqd. Syllabus: Earlier this week, the syllabus was delivered to our printer, Tom Underhill of Creative Continuum. It's 312 pages filled with a wealth of information and reference material. If you receive the printed syllabus as part of your early-bird registration, you might think about getting a version on CD as well. You'll see the handouts in full color and can click-through the hotlinks to explore the many websites that are featured in the lecture sessions. The CD version will be available at Jamboree for $5. After Jamboree, you'll be able to purchase the syllabus through the shopping cart. Construction at the Marriott: The public areas at the Marriott are still under construction. The lodging rooms are all finished, and the convention center is not affected by the remodeling. However, the hallway between the hotel and the convention center is definitely a construction zone. I hope that most of the work will be done before Jamboree, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some dust and a bit of inconvenience. I will keep you posted as we draw closer to Jamboree. Save the Dates: Woohoo!! We are thrilled to announce that the Marriott offered a proposal to host Jamboree for the next two years, and the Board voted accepted that proposal. Save the dates now for June 12-14, 2009, and June 11-13, 2010. How's that for planning ahead? See you soon! Paula
Mark, I also found many relatives in the digital directories of Los Angeles at the url below and appreciate that you shared this resource with the group. Joe: Louise B. Charlson disappears from the record in 1954. There is no record of her death, under that name, in California or in the Social Security Death Index. Eugene Charlson was my wifes father, and he refused to even talk about his past. His only known survivor did not even know that Melanie and her sister had been born. The ONLY approach that I know of to determine if he had any children is to look in a City Directory. We strongly suspect that he was a multiple bigamist, and that he may have had families in several states. We know for certain that he knowingly "married" a woman that was already married to another man, and fathered two children with her. My wife would like to find out if she has any half-siblings. Thanks anyway. Lynton (Bill) Stewart
Lynton, Every week or so I am near those two addresses, and was going to offer to snap pictures of the house, but Google Maps did a pretty good job of it already. I suggest you order death certificates of each of these people and get the next of kin info off those. Hi, Do you know what Louise's maiden name was? I checked the CA death index and Social Sec. death index for Louise Charlson with no luck. I also checked the CA birth index for Charlson babies born in the 40's. But it would be helpful to know her maiden name. Let me know if I can check further for you. I do not have access to city directories. A few years back, I found my mom, Emma Louise Regla listed at Los Angeles Junior College, Los Angeles, California in the list of "Spring Deltas, 1935." At that time, she had not slipped so far in to senile dementia that she couldn't remember anything about her past - which eventually did happen. She recognized the names of her friends and classmates she had known back then. She passed away last year in September, exactly one week after her 92nd birthday. Looking at that listing from your website brought her happiness in her last years. Southern California Genealogy Jamboree Friday through Sunday, June 27-29, 2008 Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel and Convention Center 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank Early-Bird Deadline May 1, 2007 There's no time like the present to explore your family's past. And that's just what hundreds of family history researchers will be doing at the 39th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, June 27-29, 2008, at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Burbank. According Jamboree Chairman Leo Myers, "Over the years, our conference has grown to be one of the most popular genealogy events in the U.S. It's an entertaining and educational weekend; and we have people coming from across the US and even Europe to hear the lectures, participate in the activities, and visit the exhibitors." Event co-chairman Paula Hinkel explained, "In addition to offering a wide variety of classes and speakers, we do our best to make this fun for family members from all generations." This year's event features a free Kids Genealogy Camp, a free introductory session for members of the general public, and a private guided tour of Hollywood Forever Cemetery. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first German immigrants to Jamestowne Colony, Jamboree's ethnic focus will feature German, Eastern European and Jewish ancestry. Oom-pah-pah music will greet everyone during Friday evening's welcome reception; and St. Michael's Guild, the troupe of 16th century German mercenaries from the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, will be setting up camp Saturday morning. Lectures will cover a wide variety of topics of interest to family researchers. Several sessions will address the use of DNA in identifying ancestors, while others will be concerned with black sheep and family secrets. Featured will be former diplomat Peter Landé's session on how to access over 55 million WWII-era Holocaust records that have been released to researchers for the first time in over 60 years. Sunday features a special track for Jewish research topics. "You don't need to be a genealogist to attend this conference," Hinkel explained. "just be interested in exploring your family's history." With over 80 lectures, participants will be sure to find sessions that will be interesting and useful. Topics include military, church, immigration, census, vital records, and tips on finding records in many states as well as in Germany and Eastern Europe. Archival methods will be addressed to conserve family records. How-to sessions will be offered for several genealogy software packages, Internet sites, and electronic equipment and gadgets. Special presentations will accompany Jamboree's breakfasts and dinners. Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak will present "The Search for the Real Annie Moore" at Friday Night's banquet. Smolenyak's research revealed the slave owner / slave relationships between the families of Rev. Al Sharpton and Strom Thurmond. Her account of the search for Annie Moore, the first arrival at Ellis Island, is truly heartwarming and inspiring. Newsletter author and blogger Dick Eastman's will discuss the use of genealogical information to identify family issues during Saturday night's dinner presentation. Sunday's breakfast will feature "Presidential Pedigrees" by Christopher Child and Gary Boyd Roberts of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Child and Roberts made the news recently when the researchers announced the intertwined family relationships between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Angeline Jolie, and Barak Obama and Brad Pitt. Nearly 60 exhibitors will be selling books, software and products to assist the family historian. Area genealogical societies, lineage societies and other organizations will be in attendance. Vendors will provide repair services for vintage photographs and decorative family pedigree charts. Per-day and weekend prices are available. Discounts are offered for early registration by May 1 and for members of the Southern California Genealogical Society. Individuals who register by May 1 will receive a free printed copy of the conference syllabus. Later registrants will receive a syllabus on CD and may be able to purchase a syllabus for $10 while quantities remain. Register online at www.scgsgenealogy, by mail, or by phone at 818.843.7247. Hi. I've tried to find some information after your first posting, on Nettie/Jolly, DARNELL / McKINLEY / HARVEY / DOWLEN / DOLAN. But not knowing when or where she was born makes it a challenge. This is the only database I found a remotely similar name to any that you mentioned. FENNER and EdithEVANS To the list, Is there an index of California, or more specifically, Los Angeles marriages from 1920. I just found "The New York Clipper" for June 16, 1920 online. It seems to be a show business paper. there is an entry that reads: "Walter Fenner, a vaudeville performer with "Show Me," was married to Edith Evans in Los Angeles recently." I would like to find the date of the marriage. I thank you in advance for any help you may offer.
