    3. The Los Angeles Public Library, Central Library, History & Genealogy Dept., has Pasadena city directories from the early 1900s through the 1960s (with some gaps), but I am fairly certain they will not do lookups. Here's a link to the LAPL History & Genealogy Dept.'s webpage: http://www.lapl.org/central/history.html The Pasadena Public Library has a small collection of city directories, but I'm not sure which years they cover. They may do lookups. Here's a link to the PPL Ask-a-Librarian service webpage: http://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/reference.asp Mark Lomax P.S. You might try posting your grandparents' names, birth dates, and birthplaces, and letting the list members try locating them in the 1930 census. 3. Is there any way to get information on where a person lived in Pasadena around 1930 and 1940? My grandparents aren't listed in the 1930 census, even though I know for a fact they were living in Pasadena. In 1940 we don't have the benefit of the census records yet, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a directory or something. I'm trying to compile all my California addresses into one database...mostly because I'm really weird and feel the need to do that. 3. I checked it out at http://411.yellowpages.com and they have a number of categories related to mortuary, with different results in each for Bellflower: Caskets (21) Cemeteries (56) Embalmers (73) Funeral Directors (182) Funeral Plans-Pre-Arranged (44) Funeral Supplies & Services (35) "Funeral Supplies & Services" includes Florists (hmmm!), and the above includes the surrounding area. Looks like best matches for Mortuary in Bellflower are: Vip Mortuary Service Bellflower, CA 90706 + (562) 920-2768 Whites Funeral Home 9903 Flower St Bellflower, CA 90706 Map + (562) 867-2741 These numbers should be good, and one or both should know about the old one. If not, the public library reference librarians often can look up businesses that have changed names or gone belly-up. http://411.yellowpages.com/Bellflower-CA/Funeral-Plans-Pre-Arranged?search_terms=funeral+home On 6/4/08, Marsha Ensminger <[email protected]> wrote: > There's still a mortuary at about that location; area code is now 562. > > --- [email protected] wrote: > >> The 1987 National Directory of Mortuaries shows Bellflower Mortuary at >> 10333 >> E. 3. It's indices, but in the case of the computers in Norwalk, unfortunately there's very little info contained. The name of the decedent, date of death, and State File Number, if I remember correctly. The last time I went, a year or so ago, the computers were available to the public - as long as you don't mind giving the people behind the counter your name, address, driver's license number and autograph, and leaving it with them. They used to be more or less required if you were looking for death certificates - staff didn't believe that the public could possibly obtain the State File Number any other way, and they weren't going to look anything up without it. Limit was 5 certificates (of any type) per session. Some staffers were more helpful than others. --- "Shepard, Steve C CTR USAF AFISRA 9 IS/SCB" <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > > For what it's worth, when I checked with the Yuba County clerk's office > this morning, I was informed that only the index was available for > review (even back to the mid-1800s!). 3. Marcella: When I visited, the people behind the desk were very business-like. I had to take the elevator to one of the basement levels. The two people behind the counter that assisted me were not necessarily friendly, nor unfriendly. They require you to fill out a half-sheet form indicating what specific information that you are searching for (you can fill out up to five forms per visit). Then they let you browse the shelves for the information on your own. The books (indexes) are arranged chronologically and in sections (i.e. Marriage, births, death indexes). If you organize what information that you are looking for ahead of time then you will be fine. Good luck! 1. [CALOSANG] BELLFLOWER MORTUARY
    2. The 1987 National Directory of Mortuaries shows Bellflower Mortuary at 10333 E. Alondra, Bellflower, CA 90706 and a phone number of 213-867-1778. Lots has happened since this version was printed but it is a start. They are printed ever year and almost all mortuaries have up-to-date copies, so if you draw a blank with the above number, I'd suggest going to your nearest Mortuary and asking them to look it up for you. They will be very accommodating because they want your business (sooner or later!) In fact, the new issues come out about November and the old ones are mostly tossed in the trash. I went to a nearby mortuary one November and asked if I could have their old copy when their new one arrived. As it happened, they had just received the new one and were happy to put the old one to use. (Again, they are thinking of good customer relations). I put the year-old copy on our gen. society's shelves at the library for general use. This directory gives far more information than just the name and address. It lists the nearest airport, the nearest newspaper, and the population of the town, and has lots of advertisements that often will say "the Oldest Mortuary in town," which is a good thing to know if you are going after old information. I do believe that this is a very unknown and underused resource.
