Hi Patti: I found a short article in the Los Angeles Times archives that may be your aunt. On January 1, 1935 sixteen babies were born. A girl was born at the stroke of midnight, and later that morning twins were born to a Mrs. Fisher. That's about all it says, but it gives a partial address as well. I'll send a copy of it to you in a separate email message. Hi Patti~ The father's name is not going to be found in the California Birth Index. To get that, you would need to see the actual birth certificates. I'm not sure if they allow viewing them anymore or not at the Los Angeles County Recorder's Office, but if they do, you might try www.raogk.org to see if someone could go down and check them out for you. Take care, and good luck! Go to www.sfgenealogy.com then vital indexes, then 1905-1995 California birth index - use the free one from sfgenealogy. The twins show up as Fisher with mother's maiden name Wetherwax; Los Angeles Co., born 01-01-1935. Father's first name is not given. Julia Montgomery ROWLAND was born 21 December 1906 Illinois (her mother was Ethel M ROWLAND US1910 census widow - couldn't find her on 1920 or 1930 presume mother remarried) married Laurie MINTON 1938 - 39c Benton Harbor Michigan Died 5 August 1966 Los Angeles California Can anyone find an orbituary or anything else on Julia?? Thanks in anticipation Rhonda in Qld Australia
Rhonda: I could find no obituary or death notice for Julia in the online L.A. Times Historical Archive. If she died in Los Angeles County, it is very unlikely that an obituary was published. For a county of nearly 10 million, relatively few obituaries are published. I also searched for an obituary for Laurie, who died in Bell County, Texas, in 1976, in Ancestry.com's historical newspaper archive, but found nothing. I did find a birth announcement for June Laurel Minton in a Benton Harbor, Michigan, newspaper; she was born 5 June 1941. June Minton Schmidt appears still to be alive. She is a minister ("Rev. June L. Schmidt") and is living in Georgia. I am hoping to learn more about my grandmother's brother, Dell Roy HAAR (HARR). Dell Roy was born in Georgia prob. 1894 although one record does note him as b. 1904. I believe he died April 10, 1958 in L.A. but nothing has been proved on paper for either birth or death. Dell was the son of David and Emma (Buckingham) Haar. I'm looking for descendents of men who served in the 5th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. Many of the soldiers moved into California in the 1870s. I am hoping to locate photographs, diaries, or letters of these men for a history I am writing about the regiment. Please contact me at: [email protected] if you have any information. Thank you. Rhonda M. Kohl
A newspaper that had Obits for Montebello, and the east L.A. unincorporated community called Belvedere Gardens was the East Los Angeles Tribune, and East Los Angeles Gazette. I don't know when they were established. Same publisher, once a week editions. The eastern Los Angeles city boundary for that area is Indiana Street. Belvedere Gardens and Montebello are east of that. The present Whittier Blvd., which runs from Indiana Street to Montebello and beyond, to Whittier, CA, in 1920 was named Stevenson Ave. I don't know when it became Whittier Blvd. I was born and raised in that neighborhood. -----Original Message----- >From: [email protected] >Sent: Aug 15, 2008 12:02 AM >To: [email protected] >Subject: CALOSANG Digest, Vol 3, Issue 113 > > > >Today's Topics: > > 1. It is very unlikely that you will find obituaries for these people. Even in 1930, Los Angeles had a population of 1.2 million. For a city of that size, most people who died did not have published obituaries. While there were other newspapers besides the L.A. Times published in Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s, they are available only on microfilm at the library, and the L.A Public Library does not do obituary searches. If your relatives died in one of the other 80-odd cities in Los Angeles County, it is possible that an obituary might have been published in a community newspaper, but you would need to identify the city or community. I looked up the 1930 census info (which I should have done in the first place), it gives the age when first married, so this might help; Georgia and Walter have only been married about a year, so maybe in 1929.
