Hi. I don't have access to obits. Since Los Angeles is such a big county and there are so many newspapers it's likely no obit was printed for her, usually only the well known get an obit. But you might want to send for an 'informational' copy of the death certificate, which usually lists the Funeral Home and the Cemetery, and maybe they would have some family information that would help. And you might also subscribe/post your request on the CADI list to see if another volunteer can help. Some of the Los Angeles directories are online at the LA Public Library: http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCarta-Web/jsp/RcWebBrowse.jsp I found this for 1936, 'next' door to 2025. With the earlier directories it can be difficult as many addresses were apartment complexs but not so noted in the directory. Justina, Dorothy was born March 15, 1914 in Peru, Clinton County, NY to Josephine Ruth (Haar) and Arthur R. Weatherwax. I don't have any CA addresses although I know at one time when younger she lived in Alameda County. In the obit, a sister of the twins was mentioned. Her name is Marta Jean Ashe at the time (1984) she was living in Seal Rock, OR. No listing there now. I do not know where she was born or when, although I believe it was about 1945 - 1950 or so. Possible last name of Dorothy at the time of Marta's birth was Cleaver or Bossen. Aunt Dorothy was the "marrying kind" and had 6-7 husbands, although one or two were remarriages to former spouses so she's been hard to trace. Hopefully I can obtain an obit for David and that will tell me something more. Thanks again, all. I appreciate it more than I can say!! Was Dorothy born in California or is that just her boys? Have you found her in the 1930 census or know about when she married - who were her parents? I haven't had much luck in finding Donald in the SSDI or death indexes (California or Florida), so he probably died fairly early on (possibly before the SSDI was in full swing). Do you have an address for her at any time while she was in California? Were there any other children mentioned in the obituary or just the one twin? One possibility for getting her husband's name would be to get ahold of her son's death certificate as that should ideally mention both parents. I hope this helps! Good luck, and take care! The L. A. Times Archives is at http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/advancedsearch.html, and they charge a fee to access the full articles. I think it's available through ProQuest as well, but I'm not sure what libraries and such have access to that. Joseph probably knows more about it than I do, but I just wanted to let you know that it is not at ancestry. All of this is just as far as I know, so feel free to correct me anybody. Take care! ProQuest has both Los Angeles and New York City "historical". There is a CA library which offers a free library card to anyone with a valid CA address. The card allows remote access to that site. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Justina Cook" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2008 2:36 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Birth Index look up request on Ancestry The L. Hi Patti~ I found one of the twins in the Florida Death index. If you have any other information that you could share on the family, it would help in trying to identify them in the indexes. Certain public libraries, university libraries, genealogy centers have a subscription to historical newspapers and they make it free to their patrons with library cards. Some of them allow you to access the papers it from home (via web) when you enter your library card number-you'll have to check with your local libraries/centers to see if they have ProQuest newspapers available. They have other historical newspapers available too, such as NY Times, Chicago, etc.. To the party looking for the above: Go to SEARCH.ALOT.com and enter "Jackson County, Ohio." Go down six or seven sites and click away. Notice the last name on the right side of the page. Gary
