Thank you so much for this. His birth name was John Calvin Davidson, Jr. from Columbus, Ohio. His family was half from Columbus and half from New Orleans. His father was a builder and moved the entire family whenever he went on a job. He came to NOLA for a job and my grandmother and two of JC's brothers stayed in NOLA. The other sister and brother and JC were still young so moved back to Columbus with the family. When JC was 20 he took off for Hollywood to make movies and not too much was known about him so thank you very much for this info. Would there be an obit (LA) for a Calvin Emery Davidson who died in a car crash in Corona on 27 Jul 1957? Thank you for your help. Nancy
There is an obit for a John DAVIDSON who died from car accident injuries and a funeral announcement for Calvin Emery DAVIDSON. Both mention a widow Marie and funeral services at Church of the Hills. The family names are very difficult to read in Calvin's article. Did not find a new article about the accident. Los Angeles TIMES, 1 Aug 1957, Page B9, OBITUARY. John DAVIDSON. Actually there is a 'free' entry point - but it does not have the various search features as the paid side. Also the birth index is available again without the search features and one has to page through - So if you do SMITH and there are hundres of pages...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "the cohens" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2008 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] OBIT Historical obituaries are pretty hard to find at best, and even worse without a date and location for the death. I believe this would be Lloyd and wife Grace in the 1930 census, name transcribed with a "W" instead of 'U'; since Grace's age in 1930 is 40y I checked 1920 and it was recorded as 30yrs, making her born about 1890; Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Roll: 135; Page: 18A; Enumeration District: 89; Image: 841.0.; taken Apr.7th, lines 14-16, at 1921 Prosser Ave, Name: Lloyd R Whlenhart Home in 1930: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California Age: 46 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884 Birthplace: Oregon Relation to Head of House: Head Mother's Name: Susan W H Spouse's Name: Grace G Race: White Household Members: Name Age Lloyd R Whlenhart 46y, h/h, owns home/$6500 value, has a radio, Married 1st @21yrs, b.OR, fa.b.Prussia, mo.b.MO, Advertising agent, not a veteran, Grace G Whlenhart 40y, wife, Married 1st @30y, b.MO, parents b.IL, Buyer for Retail Dept. store, Susan W H Whlenhart 72y, mother, Widow, b.MO, parents b.VA It doesn't appear that Lloyd and Grace had any children (checked the CABI); and it seems Lloyd was the only child of William and Susan (nee JOPLIN) UHLENHART; perhaps there are siblings of Grace, or his mother Susan, that have living descendants. I couldn't find Grace in the CADI; she could have remarried after Lloyd's death in 1940 and be listed by another surname at death. There doesn't seem to be very many records for the UHLENHART name. maybe this is Lloyd's 1st wife? (note: the name JOBLIN as listed in the CADI for Lloyd seems to be a transcription error, the CADI at vitalsearch shows JOPLIN; I could not find a JOBLIN name related to Susan). One of Susan JOPLIN's brothers, Ferdinand, also moved to OR by 1890, and can trace him and wife Annie up to 1920; Annie d.1923 in Lincoln Co OR, have not found a death for Ferdinand. Also found three of their sons, William T, Richard P, and Wallace H, and their families; they had 3 known sons between them; Ralph (haven't found any death info), who also had a son Ralph b.abt 1925 OR; Milton, who possibly d.AR in 1994; and Ferdinand Lawrence d.1991 in Los Angeles Co. You might try posting to the Multnomah County, and/or Benton County, OR, message boards for the UHLENHART or JOPLIN name. Also on the CADI message board to see if there's a possible obit for Susan (nee JOPLIN) UHLENHART that might list other family names. Susan died Apr.6, 1935 in Los Angeles Co, CA. I couldn't locate any info on Susan's husband, William (Lloyd's father) after 1900. I hope this is of some help. I can provide census info if needed. Melody: You said that your found your grandmother in the directories under LEMMING/LEMING which I found to be the widow of William D. LEMMING. You said you believed that HORSLEY was your grandmother's middle name and not her maiden name. I found 1910 and 1920 Bannock County, ID census listings for a couple WD/William D. and Dora. Both gave AR-IL-KY for her place and parents' birth locations. I found a Dorrah HORSLEY and her brother Walter living with her grandmother Salley MORGAN in Benton Co., AR for the 1900 census. This Dorrah was born Dec 1883, AR-IL-KY. Michael: Just using the info you gave me I found three entries for my grandmother-sure enough she uses a different version of her name in each entry. What fun! But I have addresses for her from 36, 38, and 42 which tells me that she is not married until after 42 and she comes to LA before 36. Nice. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Michael McTeer Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 7:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Benjamin Franklin H.S. Classes of 1922 (WAGNER) I do not wish to sound rude Melody, but the second part of your request is quite vague. I do not understand if you are trying to say if Dora's maiden name was HORSLEY or LEM[M]ING or neither. When you say he married a man named WAGNER, I cannot tell if you are trying to imply that she later remarried another. There are some online directories at the Los Angele Public Library starting with 1929: http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCarta-Web/jsp/RcWebSimpleSearch.jsp I found one Dora, wife of an Arthur L. WAGNER: ADD: (1929) WAGNER Arth L (Dora) clk h3428 Garden av, Los Angeles, CA ADD: (1938) WAGNER Arth L (Dora) clk h3428 Garden av, Los Angeles, CA ADD: (1942) WAGNER Arth L (Dora) clk h3428 Garden av, Los Angeles, CA My eye sight is quite poor so there might have been more. This Arthur was widowed by Dec 1950 as reported in the Los Angeles TIMES: NEWS: Los Angeles TIMES 14 Dec 1950, Page A10, Home Display Set Up Again by Handyman. Arthur WAGNER, 69[1881], a widower who loves children...his house at 3428 Garden Ave. in the Atwater District...WAGNER retired in 1946 from an electrical concern. Prior to that he had been employed in the mailroom of the Times for 15 years. Classes of 1922 Hi. I would like to try to find out which Los Angeles high school my father went to in the mid to late thirties. Does anyone know how I might do that? Also, my grandmother (Dora Horsley Lem(m)ing) married a man with the last name of Wagner at some point--probably in Los Angeles in the early thirties. Do you know how I could track that? Thanks.
