    1. [CALOSANG] SWOVELAND Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Theodore Emmet SWOVELAND which was taken at the Schurichtnberg Studio in Pomona, California. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Theodore noted as 7 months old at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Theodore and his family: Theodore Emmett SWOVELAND was b. 5 Apr 1912 in CA to parents Clara D. MORRIS (b. 28 Apr 1887 in KS) and Frank Henry or E. SWOVELAND (b. 8 Dec 1889 in Jewell, KS). There were two children born to this couple, Theodore Emmett; and Morris Elwin SWOVELAND born in 1912 and 1917 respectively. Theodore married Laura Caroline RILEY (b. 15 Dec 1913 in Arkansas City, AR) and d. 12 Jul 1958 in Los Angeles Co., CA at the age of 46. Census records provide the following information: 1920 census of Alameda, CA: Clyde R. MORRIS, age 22, born CA, parents born KS/IN, a Marine Engineer Clara D. SWORELAND, sister, age 32, a widow, born KS, parents born KS/IN Theodore SWORELAND, nephew, age 7, born CA, parents born KS Morris SWORELAND, nephew, age 2 years + 9 months, born CA, parents born KS I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that this precious old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. That's the place In my earlier post I may have left the impression that you will no longer be able to access records at Norwalk. What I meant is the some records may not be available for a time during the renovation to the stacks at Norwalk. After the renovations are complete, it my understanding that all records will be available as before. 3. Thanks for the input. It's open M-F, right? I saw something about the Norwalk office being open only one day. Perhaps that was for something different. You make it sound easy. I'm sure it's as good as it can get these days. I may have difficulty writing a report regarding their holdings, but at least I can get some records that interest me. I'm glad you told me the off ramps. That gives me a better idea. I lived and worked in that area for a long time. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Liz Stookesberry Myers" <stookesberry@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, September 09, 2011 10:15 AM To: <CALOSANG@rootsweb.com> Subject: [CALOSANG] LA Hall of Records > The address in Norwalk is the place to go. 3. Yes. That seems to be the case all over, which makes this NGS assignment next to impossible. They just say to go to a different county. sigh! Most counties seem to be going to Vital Chek or some service to handle this. 3. The originals are in Norwalk. So unless you want to try to track down church records, or civil records for another county, you're stuck with Norwalk. Things have changed there somewhat over the last couple of years. I was there earlier this year and it wasn't quite as unfriendly as it had been. Go with a list of up to five events you want to research. You'll have to look them up in the computers to get the ID numbers, then hand in your applications at the desk. I've never figured out the logic to whether they give you the original or a photocopy you can't take with you... was no end startled when they handed me the original 1895 birth certificate I'd asked about. 3. Thanks for this, but what I'm trying to find out is whether or not there is a friendlier place to view the original records. If they're available at several different facilities, then I'm guessing they're not the originals. Maybe it's impossible to view original records. I had looked this up and it sounds very restrictive in Norwalk. It might be difficult to fulfill my assignment. Most of my research has been done in New England, even though I live in California. Sometimes you can actually look through the original books. Again... That might be impossible here in California, but I thought I'd see if anyone has had a good experience. Thanks for the warning about doing my homework before heading out. It must have been very frustrating to have the offices/libraries closed. Also, I'm not planning to go to Compton. I grew up there, but I'm well aware that it has changed. 3. From the county web site: http://www.lavote.net/recorder/bdm_records.cfm _*Viewing Vital Records:*_ The Department of Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is located at 12400 Imperial Highway in Norwalk . The following will provide you with the procedure for viewing vital records. Certificates and indexes of birth, death and marriage records not exempt from public inspections may be examined at the Office of the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. , Monday through Friday, except holidays. In addition to certificates on file, there are indexes of birth, death and marriages available for public inspection as follows: Births prior to 1905 and from 1964 to the present; Deaths from 1877 to the present; and Marriages from 1852 to the present. Records of confidential marriages performed pursuant to Family Code Section 500 are not available for public review. Certificates and indexes may be examined at no charge unless a deputy is requested search and/or retrieve more than five records. Random searches of the indexes or the certificates are _*not*_ allowed. An application is required for each record searched. Information sufficient to identify the requested record must be provided. The application is here: http://www.lavote.net/recorder/PDFS/viewMarriage.pdf Specifically note the part about "random searches" and needing to fill out one of those applications for each record you want to see. 3. First thing I'd suggest is make sure the repository is open and records are available before you go. I made a trip to CA in October and everything was shut down on the days I was there. Something about rotating times to be open. I even had trouble with libraries. So, do your homework first. ________________________________ From: Christine Pettit <christine.pettit@roadrunner.com> To: CALOSANG@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, September 8, 2011 7:20:41 PM Subject: [CALOSANG] Original Marriage Records I'm taking a class through the National Genealogical Society. 1. [CALOSANG] EAST - FOWLER Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of L. M. EAST which was taken at the J. H. Kent Studio in Rochester, New York. The photograph is dated 1881 with the woman in the photograph appearing to be in her 20's or 30's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the woman in the photograph: Louise Matilda FOWLER EAST was b. 20 Jul 1868 in Canada and d. 23 Aug 1945 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 77 years. Louise's Mother's maiden name was BEATTIE. Census records provide the following information regarding the family: 1900 census of Greece, NY: Benjamin F. EAST, age 41, born Jul 1858, married 15 years, born NY, parents born England/MI, a Meat Dealer Louise M. EAST, wife, age 36, born Jul 1864, married 15 years, 3 children/2 living, born Canada, parents born Scotland Franklin B. EAST, son, age 11, born May 1889, born NY, at School H. Rufus EAST, son, age 5, born May 1895, born NY + 2 Servants 1910 census of Los Angeles Township, CA: Matilda L. EAST, age 41, a widow, 6 children/3 living, born Canada, parents born Scotland, Own Income Benjamin F. EAST, son, age 20, born NY, parents born NY/Canada, a Wells Fargo Clerk Henry R. EAST, mother, age 50, married?, to USA 1870, born Canada, parents born Scotland Charles FOWLER, uncle, age 72, a widower, to USA 1864, born Scotland, parents born Scotland Thomas L. EAST, brother, age 18, born NY, parents born NY, a Cast Camera Man in Movies It appears that Louise's husband Benjamin F. EAST was still alive and living in Monterey and Los Angeles, CA during these same periods of time, always listed as "married" in census records. Louise's son Henry R. EAST b. 20 May 1895 in NY, died in Los Angeles, CA on 20 April 1989 at the age of 93 years. He may well have been the famous movie dog trainer married to actress Gail HENRY EAST, just not certain. I am hoping to locate someone from her family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the WILCOX Family or Oregon State. The first is a photograph of Ruby WILCOX which was taken at the Snyder's Studio in Lebanon, OR. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Ruby just an infant at the time the photograph was taken. The second photograph is one of Orlo & Bertha WILCOX and was taken at the Gardner Studio in Corvallis, OR. This second photograph was likely taken in the early 1900's as well with the couple appearing to be in their teens or 20's at the time. WILCOX was b. 16 Jun 1881 in Corning, KS to parents Oliver Kent WILCOX (b. 6 Aug 1847 in MI) and Sarah Jane PURVIS (b. 13 Jan 1840 in Sullivan, IL). Orlo was one of four children born to this couple including, Francis Everett; Arthur Lemon; Oliver Wesley; and Orlo K. WILCOX all born in KS between 1875 and 1881 in Wyandotte, Reno and Nemaha Counties, KS. Orlo married Bertha Emily WILSON (b. 22 Oct 1886 in Washington, KS) on 16 Jun 1909 or 14 Jul 1909 in Linn County, OR and together they had 7 children including Helen Lucille; Donald W.; and Mary Faye WILCOX born between 1910 and 1916 in Oregon and Idaho. Orlo died 16 Jun 1970 in Granada Hills, CA and Bertha in Jan 1987 in Burbank, CA. Census records provide the following information: 1910 census of Corvallis, OR: Orlow K. WILCOX, age 28, newly married, born KS, parents born NY, a Cement Laborer Bertha E. WILCOX, wife, age 23, newly married, no children, born KS, parents born NY/KS Arthur J. 2. mike spencer
    3. Hi list, for those with English ancestors, the Yesterdays site, link below, has been updated with thousands more names taken from various official documents of persons from across the British Isles who have appeared in records in Derbyshire. Not only is Derbyshire covered but virtually every conty in England shows some connection. Latest records list those who are at the mercy of the Board of Guardians in Derby. Many trying desperately to keep out of the workhouse, others being destitute having very little choice. South Normanton Settlement Examinations covers connections with lots of Notts folks and even refers to a marriage in Portugal. Hundreds more Wills added as well as school admissions. These give in most cases DOB and record pupils who emigrated. Plus much more including Transportation to America and Australia. If link fails Google Yesterdays Journey. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
