The FB page that comes up searching just “RAOGK” it is also only a Wikipedia description. The USA open group that you can join is at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/raogkUSA/ – “Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness – RAOGK USA”. The “Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness - RAOGK International” is at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/raogkinternational/ What I wonder is if any requests are just going to get lost on these pages. Here's a link to a snapshot of the raogk.org front page from July 5, 2011. It's on the Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine." http://web.archive.org/web/20110705151859/http://www.raogk.org/ I can't see everything on the site but it looks very simple. Either BlueHost.com or HostGator.com can provide hosting for about 7$/month which should enable far more capabilities than the site required originally. So it could grow easily. I use both of these providers and can recommend them. I understand the temporary loss of RAOGK is a loss to everyone. I was a volunteer for several years which took me to various cemeteries around NE Oregon and then on the Oregon coast. Met a lot of neat people (living and dead). I would suggest that before anyone decides copy the cache and put it back out there that they contact Bridgette first and see if there is a possibility of resurrecting the site or helping in some way to get it back up. It's too bad that they didn't reach out to the community and ask for assistance. There are many of us who have webs site experience who could have stepped up to the plate to help out on a temporary basis or even a permanent basis. But I understand the reluctance of turning over your "baby" to strangers. It is a much needed service and we have lost a great service that was being provided. Thanks Joe for your very kind offer. I will keep it in mind but I have a friend who lives in Orange County who may be able to do the same for me. I was going to get them mailed to him and get him to email to me as the postage to US on that site was $18-50. It won't seem so bad if I buy two and the postage is the same which I think I will need to do now - refer email to the list. I may even be able to sweet talk him into going to the recorders office for me if they are open on weekends without much trouble. :) I just got back from there last Sunday - if I had found this sooner I could have done it myself! Thanks for checking the newspapers too for me. That was another avenue I was looking at. This sure is a helpful list! :) Thanks again Lyn In Oz. > -----Original Message----- > From: calosang-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:calosang-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Joe Walker > Sent: Thursday, 20 October 2011 6:29 AM > To: calosang@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] SHAW Castaic > > Lyn.. > Darn! Thankyou to all for the helpful replies both on and off list. I was asked who was charging me $37-50 for postage (It was $18-50 to a US address as well!) I was ordering through rootsweb and something called Vitalcheck that the site takes you to in the shopping cart. http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi I just went there and did another search to check which site it was I used and this time I specified a date of death rather than birth date and I got two entries! I am wondering if this is father and son or perhaps grandson and perhaps they were both killed in an accident since they both have the same date of death. The plot thickens! Hi everyone I am new to list and American research. I have been tracing my SHAW family for a number of years. They originated in Belfast Ireland but various members have spread across the globe to England, Canada, Australia and now one of them has led me to California. His name is William Trimble SHAW and he was born in Belfast 11 July 1868 and, according to the vital records database, he died in Los Angeles 21 Nov 1961. In 1950 his sister, Sara Campbell SHAW mentions him in her Will as being of Box 37 Castaic, California. His parents were O'Connell SHAW and Margaret TRIMBLE. I was going to send for his death certificate but as they want $37-50 just for postage to Australia I am hesitating as I have no idea what information is on a Californian Death Certificate from that time period. Is anyone able to enlighten me please? I cannot find him in the SSDI, I am not sure why. I would appreciate any help or advice or connection with any of his descendants if he has any. Regards Lyn In Oz.
Lyn.. Darn! Just yesterday I was at the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorders looking up death records. Had I known, I could have copied the info on William Shaw and sent it to you. I have ordered death certificates from them dozens of times. It costs $12. Your issue is the postage costs. I could order it for you and scan it and E-mail it to you for nothing. Lets talk. Hi list, the Yesterdays site, link below, has been updated with hundreds of school admission records of pupils who came from across the British Isles. Latest schools include Derby St Anne ,Derby St Andrew and Curbar admissions. Several pupils have American connection, having either been educated in America or moving to America. School admissions in most cases have the added bonus of DOB. There are also other records recently added throughout the site If link fails Google Yesterdays Journey. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
