    3. Aaron, All of us who are subject matter experts have said the exact same thing about how records are maintained in Los Angeles County. I order death certificates from LA County every month.  They are $12. each and take about three weeks to arrive.  Other counties in California charge the same amount, and their turnaround is much quicker.   Good luck, Joe --- On Mon, 12/5/11, Joy Fisher <jfisher@sdgenweb.com> wrote: From: Joy Fisher <jfisher@sdgenweb.com> Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Cemetery lists for Los Angeles cems.? 3. (Sorry if this is redundant but I just picked up this thread and wanted to throw some light on the subject.) The LA Public Library has copies of the DAR transcriptions from the 1930's for a variety of cemeteries. As was stated earlier, the transcriptions are not complete. They do not include sections of some cemeteries (as in Evergreen, for example, that were not predominantly "white") and they are tombstone transcriptions so unmarked graves are not included. The Southern California Genealogical Society has published several directories, including: Mountain View Cemetery 1880-1933 in Altadena / Pasadena Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery (including cemetery records, not just headstone transcription) Savannah Pioneer Cemetery in Rosemead (the list is online at www.scgsgenealogy.com) Evergreen Cemetery in Lompoc (not Los Angeles County) Rosedale Cemetery Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Cemetery (includes cemetery records, not just headstone transcriptions) Cemetery Records of Inyo County, California At SCGS, you can also find Los Angeles Burial Permits 1879-1892 Los Angeles City Death Records 1877-1899 Online Los Angeles Times Obituary Index (free index, copies available at a nominal fee) Outside of SCGS, you'll find many resources as well. Jim Seidelman has done an outstanding job of documenting burials at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and he has posted those on Find-A-Grave. The California GenWeb site LA County Cemetery listings can be found at http://theusgenweb.org/ca/losangeles/langecem.htm I agree that the key to any death information in LA is to track down the death certificate. Good luck on your search!

    3. Did you order the Death Certificate? That should have given the place of disposition in that time period. The cemetery name or just "cremation" or the name of a crematory may have been noted. Cremations are tough to track. Emby died in Orange County, not Los Angeles. Did these families reside in LA or Orange? ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron Hill To: calosang@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 05, 2011 5:25 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Cemetery lists for Los Angeles cems.? 3. That's not what I said. In addition to Find A Grave, there are other sources, such as: http://www.usgwtombstones.org/california/californ.html http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/LA-Co-Burial.htm http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cabf1905/ There are also newspapers online, some free and some by subscription. By locating an obituary, you would be able to locate the name of the cemetery. There's no one place to find information such as this. The DAR did listings in the 1930s and 1950s but these were only transcribed tombstones that were extant at the time and not of all the potential cemeteries in any given area. It was a volunteer effort. Most of these, I believe are available at the California State Library in Sacramento. You can also find licensed, regulated cemeteries at: http://www.cfb.ca.gov/consumer/lookup.shtml and you could call all the cemeteries in Los Angeles and see if they have your person. ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron Hill To: calosang@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 05, 2011 5:19 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Cemetery lists for Los Angeles cems.? 3. Aaron, if you know anything about California, you must know that it is not like the Eastern or Mid-western states. While people have transcribed tons of cemeteries in those states, the states in the West are not well studied. It wasn't until the internet that many of these lists began to be fully complied. And these, of course, are only the names of those whose graves have tombstones. Occasionally, some cemetery records have been made available to transcribers, but this is rare at best. It is a shame that it is so difficult to track down burials in California, but that is the way it is. Many of the western states had a very transient population and graves were never marked in the first place. As I don't know how old the burial might be or where, I'm afraid I have no specific advice for you as to internet sites that might be of help. ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron Hill To: calosang@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 05, 2011 3:50 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Cemetery lists for Los Angeles cems.? I am confident there are lists of folks buried and where. These lists have been a staple of local genealogical societies for decades. It was one method for these groups to make a little money. These may not be centralized and not exhaustive, but they do indeed exist. -- Aaron --- On Mon, 5/12/11, Joe Walker <joe_walker_2000@yahoo.com> wrote: > Good info...except he wants a list of everyone buried in LA > County. 3. California State funeral and cemetery law does NOT require that such lists be made public. The cemeteries must keep a plot map and list, but because so many private operators are using some of the state's oldest graveyards, they have no historical records of burials. When mortuaries go out of business, there is no requirement that they place their records with anyone or any entity. Sometimes the new operators are inclined to start their own records and have little use for the old ones of the companies they have purchased. Finally, in terms of historic-era California (statehood forward), thousands were buried in unmarked graves and no one was administering the cemeteries. No law in historic times required such records. There are literally thousands and thousands of graves in the old cemeteries that remain unmarked today and the identities of those interred in them is unknown. Finally, there is not even a full list of all the cemeteries in the State. The old State Cemetery Board surveyed the counties when it was created in 1949, but I know of cemeteries that aren't even on the old 1950's board listings. Sometimes you can only do what you can do in tracking down an ancestor. My own g-g-grandfather's grave site is unknown and he may be in one of two of the cemeteries local to his place of death. But since NO RECORDS were kept at the cemeteries, I will never know for certain. ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Walker To: calosang@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 05, 2011 4:26 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Cemetery lists for Los Angeles cems.?
