My ancestors were married in Los Angeles on Aug. 25, 1920. I'm curious as to what information is usually available on the informational certificates of that time frame. Also, can someone direct me on how to obtain the certificate once I can make it to LA? Thanks for all help and advice Looking for Adolfo Fernandez and Marcella Olivia Valdivia Lora
No one wants to discourage you from visiting LA, of course, but you can order it from www.lavote.net. The price is small ($14) and the details can really make it worthwhile. You can find commercial sites who will charge you double that, but all they do is order it from the same place. Please join us for the FREE Webinar: "Irish-American Catholic Genealogy" Speaker: Michael Brophy, professional genealogist and heir search specialist. Sponsor: Southern California Genealogy Jamboree and the Southern California Genealogical Society Date: Saturday, March 3, 2012 Time: 60 minute class, 30 minute Q&A 10:00 AM - Pacific 11:00 AM - Mountain 12:00 PM - Central 1:00 PM - Eastern Space is limited, so reserve your Webinar seat now at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/475214392 The overall goal of the lecture is to give attendees a broad overview to finding the origins of their Irish ancestors. The lecture will start with the central event in the history of Irish genealogy, the destruction of the Public records Office in Dublin on June 30, 1922 near the end of the Irish Civil War. As a result unique challenges and realistic expectations for Irish ancestral research will be discussed. Existing vital records and census records, along with unique census substitutes for 19th century Ireland, will be presented. Research materials available on-line and through film rental will be shown with examples available without the time and expense necessary to travel to Ireland. This presentation will look at a variety of ways to organize information with the intent on noticing information and trends that were not obvious, preparing the researcher to present their information to others, and assisting the researching in seeing gaps in their research. Note that Irish Protestants and resources and record repositories in Ireland will not be covered. Michael Brophy is a professional genealogical researcher, heir search specialist, and lecturer in the Boston area. He has served as Program Director and Publicity Director for the Massachusetts Genealogical Council. He was the first Treasurer of the New England of Association of Professional Genealogists. Thanks Joy for the maps. My parents, are listed at 443 Spruce Compton in the 1940 City Directory. Later that same year we lived at 1204 Oaks Ave cross streets Long Beach Blvd and Rosecrans. The ED number I found is 60-1078 443 Spruce St but that doesn't match the maps. I know it is not clear how come the SSDI itself is not mentioned in the petition. But it is absolutely essential that we all do what we can to support and sign it. The people who drafted it figured out that a more certain way to reach the goal of saving the SSDI was to prevent identify theft in ways that make crippling public access to the SSDI actually harmful and unnecessary. The following sites have excellent explanations of the strategy: http://www.fgs.org/rpac http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2012/01/29/ssdi-call-to-action http://megansmolenyak.posterous.com/please-sign-this-petition-to-help-protect-the
What does this have to do with the SSDI? Restricting access isn't even mentioned on the petition. You may have heard of the threat to close access to the Social Security Death Index. You may have already tried to do a look-up, only to turn up shorthanded. The genealogical community is rallying together to send a concerted message to legislators to try to prevent this. The first step is this: Please sign the petition at http://wh.gov/khE It's a register-then-confirm-through-email process, so if you get hung up, refer to the instructions (link below). This is White House petition which requires 25,000 signatures before the administration will respond. It deals with the pressing problem of identity theft and the IRS doing its job, instead of blaming others for their failure to identify fraud. The petition seeks to stop fraudulent use of Social Security numbers - not by eliminating SSDI, but by using it properly. Sign the petition now. We need over 1,000 signatures a day to be able to reach the required number in time. Please pass this message along to all of your friends, family and associates and ask for their support. Further information can be found at: Dick Eastman's Online Newsletter I [Liz] remember that people used to walk in cemeteries looking for children's death, so they could get the information for ID. If credit people would look at the Death Index, they would know who is a fraud!!! Liz Stookesberry Myers

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Will VAUGHN which was taken at the Van Doran Studio in Hiawatha, Kansas. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Will likely in his teens or 20's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following possible match in census records as follows: 1910 census of Hiawatha, KS: Julia VAUGHN, age 48, a widow, born KS, parents born ME, a Spice Canvasser Joseph VAUGHN, son, age 28, born KS, parents born ME/KS, a House Painter William L. VAUGHN, son, age 22, born KS, parents born ME/KS, a Grocery Store Clerk + 1 Roomer 1920 census of Los Angeles, CA: William L. VAUGHN, age 32, born KS, parents born KS, a Clothing Salesman Dorothy M. VAUGHN, wife, age 27, born CO, parents born NY/IL Robert L. VAUGHN, son, age 5, born CA I am hoping to locate someone from Will's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this VAUGHN Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Hello. I am hoping that someone on the list has ready access to the Los Angeles Times. I am looking for an obituary for the following man: George William Robert Martin (who usually signed his name as George W.R. Martin) B. 10 June, 1878, Philadelphia D. 11 Aug., 1946, (Los Angeles?) Married (when?) Bertha Barker Buried: Los Angeles National Cemetery (SECTION 230 ROW A SITE 8) George W.R. Martin was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and of World War I. He was wounded twice at the Battle of the Marne. In the 1920s and '30s -- and, I presume, until his death -- George and Bertha Martin lived at 1606 S. Ogdeo Drive, Los Angeles. They had no children. George W.R. Martin was my wife's great uncle. We've just unearthed two of his photograph albums from the attic of a recently deceased aunt, and are trying to learn more about him. Using the Veterans Administration online grave locator, I was able to identify what I believe to be the correct man, but I would like to confirm this. Thank you! Mark E. Dixon Wayne, PA
