http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2442 If you go to this site, you will see they are just in the process of uploading California. Not all the states are uploaded as yet. You can check back later to see if California is complete and try again to find an ED. Carol Hicks

Hello All, I use _http://web1.americanancestors.org/Search.aspx?Ca=344&Da=269_ (http://web1.americanancestors.org/Search.aspx?Ca=344&Da=269) for the SS Death Index. Alan Rossing, Monterey, CA
That americanancestors site is not meant for people with slow connections, I gave up after 2 minutes. What I use instead is the following free one, no membership required: http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/ssdi/ On 4/2/12, Trains75buff wrote: > Hello All, > I use _http://web1.americanancestors.org/Search.aspx?Ca=344&Da=269

My understanding is that Ancestry took the SSDI down, due to pressure from the government. However, there are still a couple of sites. >From the mormom site - http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ssdi/search_ ssdi.asp&clear_form=true And also - http://www.americanancestors.org ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jay Kubik" <jayghkub@coastalnet.com> To: <calosang@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2012 6:38 PM Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] SS Death Index > As far as I know the only place you can get the SSDI is on ancestry.com now. > > Jeannine > NC > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: calosang-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:calosang-bounces@rootsweb.com] > On Behalf Of David Hug > Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2012 5:29 PM > To: CALOSANG@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CALOSANG] SS Death Index > > Could anyone please give me the urls for the SS death index, and the > California birth index? I checked Rootsweb.com and it says: Due to sensitivities around the information in this database, the Social Security Death Index collection is not available on our free Rootsweb service but is accessible to search on Ancestry.com The California death index is available on both rootsweb.com and ancestry.com -----Original Message----- From: Richard Noble Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2012 3:47 PM To: calosang@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] SS Death Index My understanding is that Ancestry took the SSDI down, due to pressure from the government. I believe that is correct, Jeannine. I used to be able to access the SSDI at this URL ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com, but now it directs you to go to Ancestry.com and you have to have a subscription to access that info. That is also where the CA Death Index (up to ‘97, I believe?) is located. There used to be parts of it free at vitalsearch-ca.com/, but they have gone to being a completely for-fee also. Need to find someone to look up Los Angeles city directories for 1970-1977 for Virginia McRae/Maccrae/McCray. She was living at 2351 Cabot St., Los Angeles, California when her father Charles Asburne died in March 1977 at Atlantic City, New Jersey. I don't have a death date for her but believe she was born about 1919. Her father was an actor, did Vaudeville, and was said to be an experimental film maker. I don't have a first name for her husband. Think she was born in New York and lived part of the time in New Jersey. Thank you so much. Carol Hicks
