Does anyone happen to know if there were adoption records kept in Los Angeles in the late 1890s? If so, do you know where I could check them? I'm still trying to find my grandmother, who just doesn't seem to want to be found! I could just kick myself for not asking more questions when they were all alive! Thanks so much! Diane

Nora Bly was born about 1875 in Los Angeles of Irish immigrant parents. She married Delos McGilliard who was born about 1875 in Ireland. Delos and Nora had a daughter: Harriet Augusta Mc Gilliard b. Dec. 1, 1897 in Los Angeles, CA. If you have any information on these names please write. I am very excited, since these are the very first early California names I have come across. Harriet eventually married Francis Hoban Hunt in Downey, CA and then she left the area for Oregon about 1950. Thank you very much, Lillian Kathleen Martin
Divorces are not handled by the County Recorder's office, but rather a Court System. I believe it would be the Municipal Court building in downtown Los Angeles you might need. I've realized that I ought to just wait and look up the death certificate myself when I'm in Los Angeles sometime between May and August. Thanks in any case for the willingness to do lookups. Hi, it appears that my great grandparents may have divorced sometime between the time they moved to Los Angeles from Wyoming in 1920, and my great grandmother's death in 1938. I have no idea when the divorce, if there really was one, was finalized. Does a divorce index exist? I will be going to the West Coast for a visit in a month, so can anyone suggest the best way to pay a visit to the LA County Records Center/Archive there and successfully track down divorce information without knowing the date beforehand? Thanks very much! Dale
I would like to have a transcription if possible of the death certificate for Lydia Welch, died somewhere in Los Angeles County on August 1, 1938. State File Number may be 48911 (hard to read in death index). Thanks very much for the help. Dale Bicker

Hi, I am new to your list, and I'm not sure if anyone can even do this but I was wondering if anyone out there might have access to the actual marriage certificates? I believe that I might have found one of my ancestors....the age is right and I know that they did live in Texas, but with a surname like Brown, I'm just not sure. So, before I order the marriage certificate for Lillie Brown I was wondering if someone might be able to check and see who her witnesses were, as that might help? Lillie Brown age 20 married D.A. Russell on 15 Dec. 1892. Residence: Los Angeles. Thank you so much for your assistance. I really do appreciate it. Kathleen
Hi, I am seeking a DC Transcription for a cousin. His name is Earl Johnson and he died 20 May 1953 in Los Angeles Co. He was born 9 Nov 1885. Thanks, Tracy
The Chumash had a higher culture than the Gabrielinos but there is evidence that they got their religion from the Gabrielinos. They traded all the time and I'm not aware of any battles between them. The Chumash were in the area earlier and are ethnographically different. Their diets were very similar but I've never read that they were really closely linked. I suspect they were and that there were marriages between them but there seem to be no records to bear this out. ----- Original Message ----- From: Deborah Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2002 11:22 AM To: CALOSANG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CALosAngeles] Los Angeles Indian Tribes All I did was a search on the internet to get the information.
