I just found this link on the internet for looking up newspapers: http://www.newspaperlinks.com/home.cfm You might give it a try. I know the Press Telegram serves the Long Beach area, but not sure if they are the only one. Would love to have a DCT for my uncle Arrie Gasaway. DOB April 5, 1904, DOD March 18, 1976. Looking especially for next of kin's name. Thanks so much, Carla Schade
Since Deborah has sent the DCT and I now have the correct location of the death, can anyone tell me the name of the newspaper in Long Beach I would search for a 1959 obit or is this an impossibility? Thank you. Elaine/Mike Sharp
To Deborah: YIPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Translation: thank you so much for your unfailing good nature in providing us with so much valuable information. Best regards, Roberta
Hi all; It has been a while since we had an update and I want all of you to know what is going on with the site. First of all, we have a new webmaster, Aaron Everett, who has been working on fixing all the tables on the site for Netscape users not to have the overlapping lines and columns. This is taking some time due to the size of the files and the amount of information. Aaron has also been talking about giving the site a whole new look, but we have to give him some time. So you can figure out where Aaron fits into the picture, he is the Son-in-law of Steve and Laura Melton and is a computer specialist in Redmond, Washington. He comes with really good recommendations so we will have to see what he does on the site. When he has all the files fixed, the following will be what is currently scheduled to be online (after all the files are reformatted). There will be all or part of the following counties: Amador Butte Colusa Del Norte Fresno Humboldt Kern Lake Los Angeles Madera Marin Mariposa Modoc Monterey Nevada Placer Riverside San Benito San Bernardino San Diego San Francisco San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara Shasta Sutter Tehama When you visit the website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 you will note that there are other counties currently in trancription. More records for the above counties are also still in transcription. Furthermore, we have discovered that there just might be some El Dorado records out there that did not get burned in the fire. We are currently working toward accessing those and will keep you posted. Donations for the project and funding for the outstanding counties is still deperately needed. Whatever you can do to help cam be sent to me and will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE, be patient with the improvements on the files online. We are working as fast as we can and will keep you posted on how we care coming. Thanks for your patience, understanding and support. Donna Bradley Project Coordinator Pre-1905 Project P. O. Would the kind and benificent Los Angeles Mailing List Volunteer who does the DCT's look up the following for me? Russell J. Miller b. 15 Feb 1901, Lansing, Ingham Co, MI d. 30 Nov 1945, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, CA Whoever you are, you do a wonderful service/job. Thank you so very much. Sincerely, Michael J. Miller
I'd *greatly* appreciate it if an LA County volunteer could transcribe the death certificate for my great-great-great grandmother: Sarah Reed MURRAY b. Feb. 22, 1833 d. May 16, 1910, Los Angeles It's possible she might show up with a different first name (Ellen?) but the last name and birth and death dates are certain. Thanks in advance! Thanks to Deborah I now have a DCT of my great uncle. It lists as funeral director WA Brown. I didn't have any luck finding an address on him on the internet. Could anyone tell me if he still is there or a funeral home that has the records and the address? My guncle is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery and I have the address for it to be able to write for more info. thanks, Sue in KS
To add to Joe's comments I have found land records that list a female and will state who her first husband was, one time listed that a female and her brother owned the land. One time female as guardian and listed child's name. Sale of property can give you an idea of when they left the area. From such record I know my gggrandpa Smith left KS in 1881. From land records I found he had homesteaded and got the papers; knew he was in PA in 1870 and they showed he filed in KS in 1871. Here in Bourbon Co., KS have property listed by range and township in a seperate book from the deeds; you can find when someone purchased the land, go to that book and follow the land from the first transaction to the present owner which can lead to family members. How do I know that? Well, you transcribed the DCT. I go look at the house and it's still there. I get copies of the property records and find out that it was owned from 1938-1956 by Frank and Dolores Walker. Hummm...who are they, I ask? I then find out that they were my grandfather's brother and sister-in-law. Hi Deborah, I'm so excited I can hardly sit still here. You have been an angel to do all this work and I appreciate your efforts so very much. All of us, who have asked favors of you, are so very fortunate. I also want to say thank you to your neice. What a great family you must have, for them to help so many people. I have learned so much from the DCTs about my great- aunts and Katherine's husband, Platt Vallejo. This has opened so many doors and I'm so very grateful to you, for your hard work. I'd like to send some lunch money, for you and your neice, for when you take a break. I have posted on this list a few years ago, and I thought I'd give it another try. I am hoping someone eventually will recognize this name and it will help in my search. My grandfather John Benedict SPRENTZ came to California from Ohio/Michigan aprox 1928. He worked on the fishing barges as a fisherman. His SS application says he was living at 45 E. Horizon in Venice in 1936 working for A. A. HERNAGE. He married a woman by the name of Norma SHERMAN aprox 1930. According to her death certificate, she was born in Wisconsin, however I am unable to locate her birth record. His residence prior to his death was 4243 1/8 Redondo Beach Blvd. Lawndale, CA. His death certificate says he was a fisherman for 45 yrs. and lists his last employer as NATIONAL FISH MARKET. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the waters he fished in for so many years. He died 23 Dec 1974. His death certificate lists Roosevelt Cemetary @Sea, Santa Monica as cemetary and Funeral Director as Cremation Society of California, INC. This is not only a genealogy request, but it is an identity quest for me. My father died without knowing his father. He was an only child and his mother, my grandmother had not seen John since they divorced in 1928 and knew little about his family. My grandfather may have had children with his second wife, Norma. I do know that John Sprentz was born to two Hungarian immigrants.. by the name of Mihaly Princz and Mary Helen Szedlovich. I have tried searching all the usual avenues, but because this is so recent, no records are available. I have tried finding the informant on my grandfather's death record.. a Margaret CRONIN.... to no avail. It lists her address in 1974 as 6026 Marlett, Mira Loma, CA. I have tried searching California births to determine whether or not John and Norma had children. Unfortunately, while I was taking a break from research, I discovered the CA birth records have been taken offline. I have been working on finding info on my grandfather for over 8 years now. I've called all the Sprentz's in the phone book... I've called all the Margaret Cronins.. I've called the cemetary but they will not give me names of living people...(children of my grandfather, if any)...I've tried finding my grandfather's place of employment.. with no luck. I didn't know my father either...my parents divorced when I was about 5. My mother passed when I was ten. Most of my childhood, I felt the strong urge to know about my heritage. I grew up in foster homes... and never knew much about my father, John B. Sprentz, Jr . He came to visit me once when I was about 16 and I thought it would be the beginning of a relationship... the questions I wanted answered, I would finally have.. unfortunately.. I never saw my father again. He was murdered when I was 17. Now it is extremely important for me to find out if I have any relatives.. hopefully living..who can tell me about my Hungarian heritage. Sorry if I've rambled.. but I suppose desperate people will go to desperate measures. If any of you from southern California have parents or grandparents who lived in the area at the time, maybe it's possible that someone knew of a John B. Sprentz.??? It can't hurt to ask...:-) I apologize if I've went too far... and many thanks to all of you for reading this long email. A. Sprentz
