>From what I understand you have to use the Standard Form 180 to request military records. You can download the form in various formats. http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records.html This site is provided for those seeking information regarding military personnel, health and medical records stored at NPRC (MPR). Your request is best made using a <A HREF="http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/standard_form_180.html">Standard Form 180</A>. Since I began using this method for ordering death certificates from L.A. County Records, I have received each of the last three certified copies I sent for in under three weeks (one request per mailing): I include the following with my order: 1. The form that I have downloaded from the County Records site and have completed 2. A copy of the VitalCheck or Roots.web index listing for the deceased person 3. A certified check 4. A SASE Above the address on the outside of the envelope, I write, "Attn. Vital Records: Death." I hope this method works for any of you who try it! Sue Mullins Susiesearcher@worldnet.att.net

<It has been my experience, if you know the county where the person died, it is a lot faster requesting death records directly from the county not the state.> I have had sucess using Vital Check for death records. They do add a $5 upcharge but the records come very quickly (1-3 weeks) and I don't have to worry about where to send the request or using special forms. I can enter the information online for the request. http://www.vitalchek.com/default.asp Kathy Stoneberg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kstoneberg/ourfamily.htm
I have used Vital Check also with excellent results. I have probably ordered two dozen documents with them. They are fast and convienent. The first time I used them was an accident. When I started searching over a year ago, I found my grandfather on Ancestry.com. Somehow, I don't remember prompting it, the Vital Check screen came up and asked me if I wanted to order the record. This was a marriage record. Of course I did and to my surprise, five days later the document was in my mailbox. That was one of the happiest finds I have had. Having known nothing of my grandfathers family I now knew his mother, father, places of birth and first wife along with ages. What a find. As I became more experienced with the system, and Vital Check wasn't available in all of the counties and/or all of the documents, I have ordered direct from counties and saved a few bucks, but Vital Check is still the most convenient. Hello, It has been my experience, if you know the county where the person died, it is a lot faster requesting death records directly from the county not the state. My cousin requested a death record from Sacramento, and I requested the same one two weeks later, I received mine 5 days later and she received hers 4 months later. This is only a suggestion if you want the Legal documented death certificate. Thoughtfully, Sherry Davis-Ellis
