Can anyone give me any info on the Brown Brothers funeral home that would have been around in 1938. They are listed on a death certificate as the funeral directors but I have not been able to find anything on them on the internet. Does anyone know if they are still in operation and if not where would their records be? Where could I find this out? Thanks, JanaLee Petersen North Dakota
Hi, Looking for information on how to obtain a death certificate or obituary for an ancestor who died in Los Angeles County in 1975. Thanks, E. Wark, NJ
The best way to find an Enumeration District in a city, if you have the street address, is to use the home.pacbell.net site of Prof. S.P. Morse. It is called something like Obtaining Enumeration Districts for the 1930 Census in One Step. A Google search on the phrase "Enumeration Districts" turns it up first in the list. It's wonderful! I have used it for Erie, PA, Los Angeles, CA and Dallas, TX so far, all with excellent - and easy - results. About the 1930 census - the street name (and range of addresses) is written along the left side of the census page. This is extremely helpful when one has no page or line numbers. My ancestor's death certificate said that she lived on Delham Avenue, but I can not find this street on any atlas or map quest, gnis, etc. Street must have been renamed. On the 1920 census they lived on Federal. She is buried in the Old Soldiers Cemetery, so it must be close to there. Any help appreciated. Wilma
In 1930 they may not be living at the address on West 14th, since the person did not die until 1938. A city directory may be of more use. Hello all, I am new to this list and to Los Angeles County research. I am helping my friend whose husband is my son's scout master. My son for his eagle project is getting people to donate a little blood and 4 generations to put together a DNA database for genealogical purposes. The blood collection will take place the end of this month so we are trying to get his 4 generations put together quickly. The scout master's father was adopted but does have info on this biological parents names. My sister went to the county record office today and transcribed the death cert. for Esther ANDERSON nee SEYMORE, mother of the adopted child, who died 15 Oct 1938. Here is where I need help. The address given was 2223 1/2 West 14th Los Angeles, CA. How can I use this to find the family in the 1930 census? Also, Esther's husband was James Woodson ANDERSON, the only info I have on him was that he was 65 yrs old when his wife died. I need to get more info on him. A death cert. would be great but I do not know when he died, so even an obit. would be next to impossible to find. Other info on the death cert included: Cremated: Grandview Cemetery; Funeral Director: Brown Brothers 935 W Washington Any ideas on how to find out James' birthplace and his parents would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for any help, JanaLee Petersen North Dakota

After an accidental absence, I am back on this list. I noticed a few weeks ago that I wasn't getting posts, so I just resubscribed myself. Strange how these lists work! Have recently changed my e-mail address from DFiantlyMe101@wmconnect.com to ElvynMajic@aol.com. Still searching for any information on Vera Buntin/Lavera Lovell born between 1900 and 1916, possibly in IL. According to family members, she may have been a stand-in actress in the early 30s to the mid to late 60s. She had at least two children, both born in CA. Married for the 7th time in Hawaii but possibly returned to CA. sometime after 1974. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. C. Buntin

I just returned from a visit to Europe for 3 weeks to visit two "new" sisters, thanks to the volunteers at Calosang! Two years ago, with the help of a volunteer, I found my biological father's DCT in the LA area. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet him, however, the hunt lead me to locating two half sisters-one in Ireland and another in Germany. (Our father had been in the Air Force.) Anyway, I had a wonderful time getting to know them in person after 2 years of mail and phone correspondence! It was the trip and experience of a lifetime. In my visits I learned a lot about my "other" unknown familly in Ireland. I encourage anyone to pursue their family roots,,,you never know what you will find. Thanks for all of those who take the time out of their busy lives to help others! "Happy Hunting!" Shelly (Flanigan) Rollins Snohomish, WA
I don't often send messages to the list - it seems I've covered a number of topics tonight. Please read to the end - - - For look-up requests - respond to : teacherlookup@yahoo.com (I can read this from work - lunchtime only, I promise. I'll take the books with me.) I have two little books, here: 1926 Directory of the Public Schools of Los Angeles County (Excluding Los Angeles City School) and 1907 Directory of Los Angeles City Schools Each of the books lists teachers within the school districts. Each also lists the locations of individual schools. The 1926 directory lists: teacher's name, school in which that teacher taught, grades or subject taught, yearly salary and HOME ADDRESS. The 1907 directory lists: teacher's name, HOME ADDRESS, school, Room, Grades (A1, B1, etc) and Classes (A1, B1, etc. - not much help to most of us). I'll post responses to the list, if no one objects. The location of the school will be included and perhaps provide information to another researcher. I have been attempting to list school locations on the Southern California Students web page, but it will be quite some time before this project is completed. It will be fun, though. Let me give you an example of a school listing from the 1907 Directory: DISTRICT 18 - Logan Street School - Corner Montana Street. Take Colegrove or Hollywood Car to Echo Park Ave. Take Edendale Car to Montana St. (live was simpler then, even in Los Angeles). Please visit the Southern California Students web site. It has become my obsession. I'd like to move on to other endeavors, but it seems I'm hooked on this one. Only student listings from yearbooks (and sometimes, commencement programs), which are at least 50 years old are listed on the site. If you're searching for your classmates from Class of 1978 - you won't find them here! http://www.dreamwater.net/socal/ybhome.html Karla in Bakersfield --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
