Mike, I spoke to the Los Angeles Library, and one does not have to be a L.A. resident, but does have to have a library card from a Los Angeles County Library in order to access ProQuest. I do not live in the Los Angeles County Area, and my local library does not have access to ProQuest. I would need to travel to L.A. to get a card with photo i.d., you have a very unique situation. -----Original Message----- From: Mike Taylor Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 8:58 PM To: calosang@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CALOSANG] Help finding obits - LA neigborhood map To All: There is no fee when using the public library site. I just found out that the library cards for LA library are for 3 years (I'm assuming since the last time you checked something out) Looks like the last time I researched there was more than 3 years ago http://www.lapl.org/branches/

Pam, The Los Angeles Times only has obits for famous people. So you would need to know where in Los Angeles County that person lived so you could check in one of the city newspapers (of which there are many). I would get someone on the list to transcribe the death record for you. (I just paid someone to do that). Then you would know where the person lived so you could contact the local newspaper. Dear All, I have had a lot of help from the Findagrave site. Quite a few times, the data there includes whole published obituaries. Worth a look/search. This won’t help in locating an obituary, but perhaps the reason no one has been able to help: Often there is no published obituary. I’m finding this to be true more and more. Partly privacy, but also the cost can be pretty steep as they are not usually published for free. On other lists to which I belong it has been suggested to contact the librarian of the area where they were from to check the archives. I've "rescued" a group of 5 photographs belonging to the MURWEIS Family of New Jersey. The photographs include: Katie MURWEIS, taken at the Perkinson Studio in Newark, NJ, 1890's in her teens, note "Grandma's sister's daughter" Clara MURWEIS, taken at the Perkinson Studio in Newark, NJ, 1890's in her teens, note "Grandma's sister's daughter" Mrs. MURWEIS, taken at the Ludwig Schill Studio in Newark, NJ, 1900's, woman in her 50's or 60's, note "Grandma OBERLI Sister" MURVEIS (no first name) taken at the Ludwig Schill Studio in Newark, NJ, 1900's, girl in her teens MURVEIS (no first name) taken at the Ludwig Schill Studio in Newark, NJ, 1900's, man in his 60's Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Linda Katherine "Katie" MURWEIS was born in 1892 in New Jersey and died in 1973 in Los Angeles, CA and is buried in the Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, CA. Her sister Clara L. MURWEIS was b. 1894 and died in 1960 in Los Angeles, CA and is buried in the same cemetery as her sister in Glendale, CA. Their Mother, Hattie SZYMANOW MURWEIS was b. 1867 and died in 1927 in Los Angeles, CA and is buried in the same cemetery as her daughters. Their father was George P. MURWEIS b. 1864 in New Jersey, he married Hattie SCYMAROWITZ or SZYMANOW (1867-1927) and together they had 5 children including, Linda Katherine "Katie"; Clara Louise; George William; Hattie E.; and Elsie M. MURWEIS, all born between 1892 and 1906. I am guessing that in addition to photographs of the parents the other photograph identified only as "MURWEIS" of the teenage girl is either sister Hattie E. MURWEIS or Elsie M. MURWEIS. It may be cheaper to order the certif. The person will charge by the hour, including travel time. Depending on the traffic congestion, this could add 2 hours to the charge.
