There are obviously mistakes on one of the lists. My mom died in September, 2007. When her information was finally on the Social Security Death index, they had her last residence as Los Angeles, California. Well, she'd lived in Los Angeles for most of her life, but she'd lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for 10 years before she died and she died in Honolulu. I don't know how Social Security gets it's information; it very clearly states that she died in Honolulu on her death certificate and my sister gave Social Security all the informtion (including a copy of the death cert) when she notified them. And they still had her last residence incorrect on the list. Jeanne kaytt <[email protected]> wrote: These two indexes are undoubtedly for the same person, both having the same SSN. Kathy, >From my experience, instruction and understanding with these records, the SS death index would be more accurate with her birth date, since she was the actual person to fill out the application. But in order to be 100% accurate on that, you would need to purchase her ss-5 card application from the social security administration to see what she wrote down. Her last benefit may not have been claimed by a living person until that later year. The California death index record is probably closer to the correct death date because that form is filled out right after death to create the death certificate, but the person remembering when she was born, the informant, wasn't real accurate. Do you have any other records that would show a birth year or age, like a census record or marriage record? If you have the death certificate, it will show the burial information, mortuary, cemetery, or cremation info. You can also contact the company that prepared her remains for whatever took place there to see what their records have for her. Human error is also possible. The transcribers who indexed the records may have hit the wrong key on either of the online records. It just goes to show ya, that you have to take everything with a grain of salt and continue to try and get more records that she actually was alive to fill out. Even official records can be inaccurate. I purchased my grandmother's ss-5 application which she filled out herself, it had her correct birth date and mother's name and place of birth, but the rest of the parental information was wrong. She was married to her 2nd husband at the time, used her 1st husband's father's information as hers. I had learned that her real father died when she was real young, she never knew him and she married her first husband when she was 15 yrs old. I would say that would indicate any number of reasons why wrong information was on the application. I hope this has helped in some way. Keep hunting for more records to match the dates. Good luck to you. Hi Joyce, I was able to view microfilmed Long Beach newspapers at the California State Library(http://www.library.ca.gov/calhist/index.html) in Sacramento. They have a large selection of newspapers on microfilm from all over California. You can go the California Newspaper Project website http://www.cbsr.ucr.edu/cnp/ and check their searchable database for newspapers. This site can assist you in finding newspapers for various locations and time periods, and will tell you what libraries hold them. If your library isn't listed, they may be able to get the microfilm on interlibrary loan for you. Hope this is helpful! I am looking for city directories for Long Beach between 1900 and 1906. Does anybody know if there is a library that has them? If they do, are they books or microfilm? Thanking you advance for any assistance you can provide! Robin
It appears that none was published prior to 1907. Neither the Library of Congress nor the Los Angeles Public Library (which has one of the largest collections of city directories west of the Mississippi) has a Long Beach city directory dated prior to 1907. Charles "Pop" Kelchner was married on June 9, 1900 to Carie A. Moyer, and they had one daughter, Kathryn. "Pop's" wife passed away on March 29, 1933. "Pop" also had a brother, Jay. Both Jay and Kathryn moved on to California. Jay was a bachelor; however, Kathryn was married to C. E. Jones, and she had several sons, but I have no names or the full name of Kathryn's husband. They lived in Alhambra, California. Kathryn was born March 22, 1902 and passed away Nov. 26, 1997 in Alhambra, CA. The reason I am posting this is because this year the Reading (PA) Phillies are having an induction of Pop Kelchner into the Hall of Fame, and they would like to have some relatives present at the induction ceremony. Can anyone help? Perhaps Kathryn's obituary would give the names of her sons, and the full name of her husband. Thanks, Sidney in Pennsylvania
