    3. Hi Callaway Gang, Sorry I have been inactive on the List for so long. I've been away for 10 days to Denver, CO attending the annual meeting of The Callaway Family Association, Inc. Our documentation >beyond William is very slim. >Frank Neher. > HI Frank, Got your GEDCOM and converted it so I could view it. I will study it more intently over the next few days. At first glance it does not appear that I will be able to help you. There are two main Calloway lines in the US. One is from Peter Calloway in MD and the other is from Joseph Calloway from VA. Both entered the US in the mid to late 1600s. There is no known connection between Peter and Joseph. I regret to say that I have little to no information on the Peter line as I descend from the Joseph Line. I consider the Joseph line more my expertise, if I have any at all. Your Wm Calloway you say was born and married in Delaware. That makes me believe that he is probably from the Peter line. The migration of the Peter line is MD, DE, eastern VA & NC, and SC before finally to GA, AL, and west from there. If you have heard of Calloway Gardens in GA, that is from Peter's line. Joseph's line appears to migrate from central VA, to western NC, TN, KY. Also a branch went from NC to GA and then AL and further west. It gets real confusing in GA and AL because both lines migrated to those areas about the same time. There is quite a bit of information on the World Family Trees from Family Tree Maker. These are trees that people have submitted for inclusion on CD. Now much of this information is wrong but at least it gives you a starting point to prove or disprove. I know none of this is much help but I thought I would let you know my initial thoughts. I will get back with you in a few days to see if I can find anything. Chris.....

    3. Hi, I would like to hear what others have to say about the Callaway Clan, also. This was one of the first books that I looked at for my Callaway family. After looking through the Callaway Journal, I found that it refuted a lot of what was in the Callaway Clan. The Callaway Clan mixed together two lines, that of Francis and of Peter, according to the Callaway Journal. I am anxious to clarify the correct ancestry of Colonel >Richard Callaway. Can you give me the source of your information. > Hi, Most of my Calloway information comes from WFT, Internet, Surry Co, NC Heritage book, and fellow researchers. Thats not to say that we are right. It is a common practice to accept what someone else tells you as fact when in reality it is thought or supicision. I have no absolute proof at this time that proves my lineage prior to the 1800s and am relying on others for that information. A preponderance of researchers appear to agree with the lineage I listed. I too am new to the list so do not know that this has been discussed. If it has I would love to hear the ultimate conclusion. BTW, did you all know about the Calloway Family Association? If not, it is on the Internet at address: http://www.lgc.peachnet.edu/callaway/cfa1.htm They offer census records on line of all the Calloways. They also produce a yearly journal that is for sale. I personally have not purchased any of them but would imagine them to be a treasure trove of information. Some of the basic information I have found, is there appears to be 2 lines of Calloways that entered the US in the mid to late 1600s. They start with a Peter Calloway from MD and a Joseph Calloway from VA. Most all Calloways I have chronicled originate from these two lines. To my knowledge there has been no connection or relationship made between the two. I would love to hear from others on their thoughts. I have over 1000 Calloways in my database and would love to share and gather more. BTW, all of my Calloways are from the Joseph line in VA. I have nothing at all on the Peter line in MD. Chris.....

    3. Hi Everyone! I am requesting information on a William Rodger CALLAWAY. He is the man that our town is named after. He was born 31 Aug 1852 and died 7 Feb 1937. Married Emma Ellen Ecclestone, dau. of W.T. Ecclestone of Hamilton, Ontario in Sept 1878. William was the son of Frederick William Callaway of Wiltshire, England and Margaret Rodger of Crieff, Scotland. He had a brother, Samuel, whose career was in the railway business. William worked with the railroad as well, beginning at age 16. If you have any further information regarding this particular man, I would appreciate hearing from you. Our town will be celebrating its centennial in a few years and I would like to gather the data now. Thank you! Looking for others who are researching the following CALLAWAY line: Peter CALLAWAY 1630>John CALLAWAY, Sr. 1685>John CALLAWAY, Jr. 1715>Levin CALLAWAY abt. 1736>Jehu CALLAWAY>John CALLAWAY 1791>Madison Jasper CALLAWAY 1824> Richard Eugene CALLAWAY 1871>Annie Laurie CALLAWAY 1901. I know there is information out there on Peter CALLAWAY to Jehu CALLAWAY, but very little on John, Madison, Richard, and Annie. I am looking for help on the sources of the information on the information for Peter to Jehu and then if others fall in the descendancy from Jehu down would be great. Our line seems to be based in the counties of Baldwyn and Hancock in Georgia. Thank you for any assistance. Please email at [email protected]

    3. I am a descendant of Thomas CALLAWAY Jr., b. 1753 in Halifax Co., Va., d. 1819 in Knox Co., Tenn., through his ninth child, Frances CALLAWAY, b. 1792, Bumcombe Co., N.C., d. 1840, Washington Co., Tex., who married Jesse BARTLETT. I would be interested in swapping information with anyone else interested in this family. I am aware of the chart of the Callaway family published on pp. 76-80 of vol. 5 of the Callaway Family Journal (1980) and do not need information there published if correct, but I would like to know of corrections and additions. I have considerable information on Frances and Jesse's descendants, which I will be quite happy to make available to anyone who's interested in it. I am particularly interested in knowing where Thomas Jr. was living when Frances was born on 29 Feb 1792. I understand she was born in Buncombe Co., N.C. but do not have any convincing evidence of her birthplace. Buncombe was formed just the year before, 1791, and was much larger than it is now. Was she born in what is now Bumcombe County, or was her birthplace in a part of Bumcombe that later became part of some other county? Does anyone know exactly where they were living--on what creek or road, in whose land grant, etc.? I also would like to hear anyone's idea on the identity of Thomas Jr.'s wife. Family records, such as they are, say it was Jude Ann MOFFIT, whom he married in 1768 in Bedford Co., Va. A family bible confirms by fairly contemporaneous entry that her name was Jude but does not give the last name. The name Moffit does not appear in any subsequent generations as a middle name, at least in the information I have, although this family was quite prone to make such use of ancestors' names. No one with whom I've corresponded within the Callaway Family Association can confirm that Moffit is the correct name. Here's the basic information I have on the children of Thomas Jr. and Jude: 1. Elijah CALLAWAY b. 12 Oct 1769, Bedford Co., Va. m. Mary CUTBIRTH 7 Apr 1789 d. 3 Mar 1847, Ashe Co., N.C. 2. (Daughter) CALLAWAY b. between 1770 & 1790 3. This relationship is proved by the following record published in "Store Accounts of John Nelms of Salisbury, 1758-1787," by John E. Jacob, Jr., 1990 - published by Family Line Publications, Westminster, MD. - Account: Callaway, Zachariah, son of William, Sr. (1774-19 Jan 1776 [acct. date]. Got beginning 18 February 1775 molasses, sleeve buttons, balance from Ledger H and a credit on 19 January 1776 for his father 0/1/6. Paid by credits for myrtle wax 0/17/9 in full. ---------------------------------------- The above William Callaway was born c1715, Somerset Co, MD; d. 1784/5, Sussex Co, DE; md 1 Dec 1734, Somerset Co, MD, Margrit More (Stepney P.E. Parish Records, Vol. 1, p. 21). His father was William Callaway, Sr. - b. 14 March 1688/9, Somerset Co, MD (Somerset Record, IKL, p. 39); d. 1758, Somerset Co, MD (Wills, Liber 30 folios 523-4); md. (1) Given Caldwell; (2) Elizabeth [Surname Unknown}. His parents were Peter Callaway b. [England?]; d. by 1719, Somerset Co, MD; md. Elizabeth Johnson (bonds of matrimony published 26 March 1667, Somerset Co, MD. If you would like to be in touch with someone who knows much more about the descendants of Zachariah Callaway, contact me. I will send you a snail mail address. Sherrill U. 1. Obedient Callaway Cleveland
    2. The McArthurs
    3. Hello everyone, I just joined this list, and am seeking information on my branch of the Callaways. This is what I already know: 1. Joseph Callaway - of Essex Co. Va, but of the "Callaways of Cornwall." 2. Francis Callaway, Sr, + Frances (?) - of Essex Co. Va. 3. Francis Callaway, Jr + Sarah Brewer (late 1700's) - of North Carolina & Pendleton District, S.C. 4. Obedient Callaway + Jeremiah Cleveland - of S.C. 5. Susana Cleveland (b. 2-16-1806, d. 12-1-1888) + Pendleton Isbell - of S. C. (later, Texas) As you can see, I have very little on the Callaways, and no real dates on anyone before Susana Cleveland. I'm hoping I find some cousins who know more than I do ! Thanks, Margie

    1. William CALLOWAY, Benton Co. 1840
    2. Looking for information about William CALLOWAY. He was living in Benton Co. AL in 1840, age 50-60. Living nearby were Isaac and James, probably his sons. I believe that William was the father of my ancestor, Nancy Caroline CALLOWAY. She was born 16 Jun 1824 in GA and married David HYATT on 4 Feb 1841, probably in Benton Co. AL. I appreciate any help.
