    1. Matthew D. Callaway
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. Gail, Last evening I did pursue the Derickson records in Sussex Co, DE - and they did, indirectly, lead me to a certain branch of the Callaway family. It was to a branch of the family that has left us many questions. I know you are glad to hear that! The Dericksons themselves do not tie-in directly to Callaways, but the Derickson associates are also associates of this Callaway family. This is William Callaway, Jr. (William-5, Peter-1). This William Callaway, Jr. had no will, but several administrations were attempted on his estate. Eventually his daughter, Elizabeth, became admr., but she died before administration was complete. We have literally had to "scratch" for children of William Callaway, Jr. The important thing is that some of his children did end up in Georgia. Give me a little time to check out other things in our records. Be back with you soon. Sherrill Distribution: To: <Name Not Given> [email protected]

    1. Re: Matthew D Callaway
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. To Gail: How I would love to find Matthew D. Callaway's lineage! I have worked on that for years. We have had/do have several CFA members who descend from Matthew D., and we have searched and searched. I think at some point we were able to isolate the father, William. But, I will have to dig in the files to be absolutely sure what we decided about his migration pattern. I will venture this observation. I fully believe that William Callaway came to Georgia from Sussex Co, Delaware. During the 1790's and early 1800's, a number of Callaways came to Georgia from Delaware. They were not in Wilkes Co, GA, however, where an earlier group of Callaways settled. I would not bother looking at Wilkes Co, GA records - but look everywhere else. The problem seems to be more with Delaware records, than Georgia ones. Years ago, Delaware called in all the old county records to the Archives. These records were stored, scattered around, in old warehouses....which frightened me - because of the possibility of loss by fire or other disaster. Now, I have been told, all the records were moved to a secure, fire-proof facility, and as funds become available, they are being processed into the archival holdings, and become available for research. A number of years ago we had a workshop at the Delaware Hall of Records in Dover. At that time we had a microfilm copy made of all the Callaway records that were available. Over the years I have made several visits, and each time found new records were available. Eventually, perhaps, everything will be processed and we will find answers to many of our questions. So, we can't give up. The name Derickson/Derrickson/Dirickson/Dirixson is found in Sussex Co, Delaware. Give me a little time and I will study up on the name Derickson to see if that leads anywhere. It is quite possible that William Callaway, the father of Matthew, was married to a Derickson. Keep the faith. We will get the ancestry solved. 1. Thos Callaway/Mary Baker
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. Hi Roger, I am glad to see you still at work on the Callaways and related lines. We will be in Austin next June for the CFA summer Board of Directors meeting. Perhaps you can dine with us during that time so that we can discuss matters more fully. Bobbie's sister has been sending her files to me, but the process is slow. We have mostly concentrated on getting the computer files transferred, then will start on the paper files. So, I don't know the "last word" on Mary Baker. I do know that she was a sister of the Rev. Andrew Baker, who apparently was of some reknown as a minister in the mountains of NC, and perhaps elsewhere. I suspect the knowledge concerning Mary Baker as wife of Thomas Callaway came from the late Eleanor Reeves who lived her entire life in Ashe Co, NC, and who descended from four Thomas Callaways in succession. I suspect that Eleanor Reeves information on Mary Baker was "family information," the benefit of numerous generations remaining in one place. I will ask Bobbie's sister if she had a file on the Baker family. For those who do not know, our associate genealogist, Bobbie L. Callaway of Monett, MO, passed away two years ago. She maintained the files on the Joseph Callaway lineage, and she was a direct descendant of Thomas and Mary Baker Callaway. Roger, I suggest that you trying posting a query on the Ashe Co, NC GenWeb page regarding the Bakers and see if you can learn anything that way. If you make any great discoveries, please pass them along. Sherrill Distribution: To: <Name Not Given> [email protected]

    1. Re: Two Josephs
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. Chris, We are in the land of "nebulae" when we try to deal with the question of the number of generations of Joseph Callaway in this lineage. I will just say that our "pure" research has not turned up evidence that there were two generations of Joseph Callaway in the descendancy lineage. I realize that the time span between 1687 when the name of Joseph Callaway appears on the importation lists, and 1712 when the first known son, Thomas Callway, was born is lengthy. However, one must consider that before he could marry, Joseph had to work off his term of indenture....5 to 7 years....before he would have been permitted to marry. Also, it appears that the son, John, mentioned by Elijah Callaway to Draper, was older than Thomas. The daughter, Elizabeth, could also have been older, thus shortening the time span between 1787 and the 1712 birthdate of Thomas Callaway who was the eldest surviving son of Joseph. There is also the possiblity of "stillborns" between these events. Also, there remains the question of "how old was Joseph Callaway when he came to America?" Lyman Draper's "Life of Boone" is not a PRIMARY source for Callaway research. It is SECONDARY at best. Lyman Draper was not an authority on the Callaway family. He used information provided to him by others - in this case, Elijah Callaway. Elijah Callaway was a very old man when he wrote to Draper. He, no doubt, recounted tales he had heard about his heritage. In these letters, Elijah did give "provable" misinformation about his family to Draper. We must remember that the information provided to Draper was from a very old man who was recounting family stories dimmed by time. Just think back of our own memories of family tales heard in childhood - how really clear are these in our minds? The research we have been conducting in England actually does suggest that there may have been two generations of Joseph Callaways. The question is, did both Josephs come to America? Our research is not yet complete on this subject. We will be returning to England sometime next year to continue this project. We are far from ready to announce anything regarding this, since we must follow through in records to see if the Joseph Callaways we have isolated in England remained in England, or if one or both disappeared from records. So, based on the above, we choose to just leave ONE Joseph Callaway to head the charts of the Virginia Callaways. Clear as mud, right? Personally, I don't think it is our most important task at present. There are too many Callaways out there who need to be attached to the known Callaway lineages. That is where I try to spend most of my energy in US research. The date we use for the birth of Richard Callaway is from his own Family Bible. This Bible is still in existence. I have seen it. There is a photostat copy of Richard's Bible in the DAR library. The actual Bible is owned by descendants in Kentucky, and was brought for display at the 1980 CFA annual meeting in Louisville, KY. Vol. VI (1981) of The Callaway Journal contains a feature on this Bible. I might add that the date of birth for Richard Callaway, given in his Bible, does coincide with his coming "of age" and making his first appearance in public records. I hope this clarifies, somewhat, our stance on the subject of "Two Joseph Callaways." Sherrill Distribution: To: <Name Not Given> [email protected]

    3. To Susan Whipple - The Callaway family who appeared in Wayne Co, IN at early dates are from Kent Co, Delaware, via Stokes Co, NC. One of our CFA members, now deceased, who attended most of our early workshops, was descended from the Kent Co, DE Callaway family. When we held our workshop at NC Archives, Raleigh, she looked into the Stokes Co records. I will have to dig a bit to find these records. I seem to recall that there was not much of a genealogical nature in the Stokes Co records, except to prove that JOHN CALLAWAY was there for a short period of time before moving on to the mid-west. Census records show him - for the first time - in Wayne Co, IN in 1820. All the early Callaways in Kent Co, DE are descendants of Peter Callaway III, s/o Peter Callaway, Jr., s/o Peter Callaway, Sr (the immigrant). In later years a few of the other Callaway branches moved into Kent Co. I will help you all I can. We would love to have the descendants of John and Sarah Calaway Howard. 3. I've seen a couple of recent messages, one from Chris Schulthesis and one from Sherrill Williams, that name Mary BAKER as wife of the Thomas CALLAWAY who lived from 1712 (or possibly 1700) until 1800. I'm a g-g-g-g-g-grandson of Mary and Thomas. The only source I have for any information on Mary is the chart published in volume 7 of the Callaway Family Journal. What authority is there for their marriage (which I have as ca. 1735)? I found Bess Buchanan's DAR lineage chart that says that Mary died in 1778. Does anyone know if that's correct and have a source for it? Does anyone know any more about Mary and about the BAKER family? Cheers to all- Roger Bartlett Austin, Texas [email protected]

    1. Matthew D. CALLAWAY (GA,MS,TX)
    2. Lenora G. Backus
    3. I am searching for the parents of Matthew D. (Davis or Derickson) CALLAWAY. According to all census records, Matthew was born in GA about 1817. I found Matthew (M. D.) in Attala County, MS in 1850. He was listed as M. D. CALWAY, age 33, born GA. Family members were wife Sarah G. (33, GA), William Mc (11, GA), John (8, GA). M. D. CALLAWAY was next found in Scott County, MS in 1860. Family members were wife Sarah (42,GA), John (17,GA), Jeff Davis (8, MS), Sarah (6,MS). Also with the family was John GRIMES (26, GA). Son Wm. CALLAWAY (22?, GA) was living next door. In 1870 William (30) and his family were living next door to M. D. CALLAWAY in Bell County, TX. Matthew died before 1880, as Sarah Glenn is found in Bosque County, TX with children remaining at home. Sarah subsequently married Elder F. D. L. KOEN. Matthew D. married Sarah Glenn McWHORTER about 1836. They probably married in GA, but I haven't located a marriage record yet. All the McWHORTER genealogies show Matthew as Matthew Derixson GALLOWAY. He was definitely a CALLAWAY as proven by land transactions during his lifetime. The McWHORTERs were also in GA during this period. Matthew's father was shown in a family bible as William CALLAWAY, born 1776. I have not seen this bible as it is in private hands. Therefore, I don't know who wrote the entries or when they may have been written. I haven't found Matthew in 1840. I haven't found any proof or even an indication of who Matthew's parents were, other than the information from the bible stating his father was William. Does anyone have any information that might lead me in the right direction to find Matthew and William in 1840 and earlier in GA? Thanks, Gail

Joseph Callaway b. d. Essex Co, VA; md. ???? > Hi Sherrill, Not that my information is correct but I found where I got the information that there were two Josephs. It was from the Heritage of Surry Co, NC volume I, Family History # 128, page 91-92 as written by Gil Robertson. Let me quote from his words: "Joseph was in VA by at least April 20, 1687, at which time John Medor was granted 640 acres in Rappahannock Co, VA., for the transportation of 4 persons, one being Joseph Calloway. According to the historian Lyman C. Draper, in "Life of Boone", he states: "Joseph Calloway emigrated early from England to VA. He had only one son, Joseph who settled in Caroline Co, VA, in that colony, while it was yet a frontier wilderness, and there were born to him seven sons and two daughters...Richard Calloway, the sixth son, was born about the year 1722, his father, mother and a brother all sickened and died of fever within a period of 6 weeks, while Richard was yet a youth." The Heritage book that I mention was published in 1983 and there may have been some new information come to light. I also know that these heritage books are not the greatest source of factual information and there is often a lot of wishful thinking in them. Having said that, I use them as "proof" until I can research it to find out different. I personally have not looked at the Draper papers or the book "Life of Boone" to find out if this is true or not. Also I have found that many, many Calloways in the 1800 and early 1900s were adept at trying to find some direct connection to the Daniel Boone line. I have found, that it is often not a blood relative but a marriage relative. Let me reiterate that I do not accept this as proof by any stretch of the imagination, but I also have no reason to disbelieve it at this time. If you have more information to share on this I personally would love to hear it. Chris Schultheis.....

    1. Spelling the Name
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. CALLAWAY/CALLOWAY OR CALAWAY/CALOWAY It seems to make little difference how the name is spelled. Both main lines use both spellings. Even those who came later from England used both spellings. The phone book for the county where my mother's Callaway relatives lived shows listings under both spellings. They are all relatives. The spelling using the single "L" is often used by those whose family traces back to Sussex Co, DE. Why? Who knows! Families from that area often awarded their children with three "given" names - such as Mary Susanna Elizabeth Calaway. It matters not how your family spells the name. You may find your cousins in another state using a different spelling. Even the State of Kentucky had a problem. They had to admit they erred when they named CallOway Co, KY for Col. Richard CallAway. FRET NOT over the spelling. Sherrill Distribution: To: <Name Not Given> [email protected]

You can find my Calloway lineage on my Family Tree Maker home page. The address is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/c/h/Christopher-E-Schultheis/index.html It lists about 6-7 generations of some of the Calloways I have. Someone mentioned about the different spelling. I believe there to be no difference. The Peter line spells it with an "O" and the Joseph line spells it with an "A". I have even found that to not be entirely consistent. So for those of you searching the surname make sure you check both spellings. Chris.....

    3. Sorry. I said I would "shut up" but I forgot there was a request out there for information on "Callaway Clan," by Bessie C. Hoffmeyer. I am sitting here with a copy on my knee. Someone correctly stated that this book makes the error of combining the Joseph Callway line with the Peter Callaway line. If you are a descendant of Joseph Callaway of Essex Co, VA, you do not need this book. There is background on Thomas, William, Francis & Richard Callaway, sons of Joseph - but a great deal of the information is old re-runs, and much is erroneous. If you are a descendant of descendants of Peter Callaway who settled in Wilkes Co, GA c1783, you will find much of interest in this book. Four brothers settled in Wilkes Co, GA soon after the Revolution. They were Job Callaway (w. Mary), John Callaway (w. Bethany Arnold), Joseph Callaway (w. Sabrina Morgan) & Joshua Callaway (w. Isabella Graves Henderson); also with them was their nephew, Isaac Callaway, Jr. (w. Mary (Polly) Barrett). These are the families dealt with. There are facsimile reproductions of several of the Callaway Family Bibles. Mrs. Hoffmeyer is a descendant of Joseph and Sabrina Morgan Callaway, and it is this line that is dealt with in more detail. Her branch moved from Wilkes Co, GA to Whitfield County, GA in NW GA, just below Chattanooga, TN. But, in dealing with this book, one must always remember to delete in one's mind the references to the Joseph Callaway of Essex Co, VA line. It can be misleading. If there are other questions about this book, I will be happy to respond to them. Sherrill U. Williams Distribution: To: <Name Not Given> [email protected]

    3. Chris - thank you for passing out the CFA home page address. You may still be able to get through to the home page via that address, however we have a new web page, and new web master, and a new address which I gave in a previous note. I will give it here again for the benefit of those who may wish to visit: www.metronet. com~cfa/callaway/home.htm We have "Chat" on the 1st Sunday in each month at 10:00 pm EDT (soon to be EST). Anyone is welcome to join us there. For those of you who might develop an interest, our next annual meeting will be the 2nd weekend in October 1999 in New Orleans, LA. In the year 2000 we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of CFA, Inc. We will gather at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, GA, in October, for that event. In Volume V (1980) of The Callaway Journal, we published lineage charts and outlines for the Peter Callaway line and the Joseph Callaway line - about 5 generations based on documented records. If you would like for me to begin contributing this to the list, I will be happy to do so. I will not do so unless it is requested by the list members, as I don't wish to dominate this list. Otherwise, I will try to help you all when I can. Since I have been away from the list so long, I just want you to know that I am only playing "catch up." I am not promoting anything except to help you out when I can. I will now "shut up" and wait for any questions that come my way. We all benefit by mutual exchange. Sherrill U. 3. Chris, I noticed in your response to Lila you gave a lineage descending from Joseph Callaway and wife "Catherine." Is there a source for "Catherine" being the name of the wife of Joseph Callaway? The lineage is confusing to me. Is the lineage you recited as follows...? I Joseph Callaway II Joseph Callaway - md. Catherine III A. Thomas Callaway B. William Callaway C. Francis Callaway D. Richard Callaway E. James Callaway F. Elizabeth Callaway [Bramlett?] G. Ann Callaway Stodgill [Sturgill] After years of studying the records relative to Joseph Callaway of Essex Co, VA, we have concluded that there is only one generation of Joseph Callaway......and nowhere did we ever find a wife named for him. If someone has found documented evidence that there were two generations of Josephs, and one had a wife named Catherine, please share this documentation with all of us. Friends, more than 25 years ago, when a group of us with Callaway ancestry, began our attempts to straighten out the Callaway family, we discovered that there are two main branches of the family from which a majority of United States Callaways descend. Peter Callaway was an immigrant to Somerset Co, MD by 1663 (and may have been in VA by 1649) and Joseph Callaway was in Virginia by about 1683. We soon discovered that the two lineages were hopelessly intertwined in DAR and other lineage society records, published works, and we were all passing this misinformation to each other. None of us could make any progress on our Callaway lines because of this. Eventually we started "workshops" whereby 12 to 15 people would gather for a full week at various state archives and read actual public records. Over the years we visited the archives of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. We stayed at each place for a full week, standing at the door each morning when it opened, and being pushed out at closing time. After dinner, we critiqued the day's work and made plans for the next day's work. In this methodical way, we read a lot of records and gathered huge amounts of documentation. Finally, it became clear that there were definitely two main colonial Callaway families - unrelated on this continent. Many of you have seen Callaway charts proudly headed by an ancestor known as "Thomas Callaway of Charles City County, Virginia." Our research in Virginia colonial records uncovered land escheatment records. In these is a record showing that "Thomas Callaway died in this country with no heirs" !! - and thus, his land reverted to the crown (King) and was re-granted to another person. Thomas Callaway is nobody's ancestor! There is a large chart in existence which is headed by the above Thomas Callaway, and this chart combines both branches of the Callaway family as his descendants. I will be happy to work with all of you on this mail list to attempt to help you document your Callaway lineages. Sherrill U. Williams Genealogist, The Callaway Family Assoc, Inc.
