CALLAWAYS in AR, OK, and TX. My grandfather was James Roland CALLAWAY b. March 23, 1894 in OK (Choctaw Nation Territory), m. Dora Ozella CRUMBLEY , d. May 17, 1964 in Corsicana, TX. His father was John W. Robley CALLAWAY b. October 18, 1853 in AR, m. Nancy Elizabeth KNIGHT (Athens, Henderson County, TX), d. December 28, 1930 in DeKalb, TX. Linda, I can't answer your questions directly, but maybe the attached will provide some more clues. The first is an extract from my Callaway data; the second is the descendants I have for my gg-gf, Chesley Callaway, Jr. Chesley moved to the Elsberry area in about 1814, before MO was a state. I think he may be a prime candidate for your ancestor. These are all shown below. As these notes say, my grandmother worked in St. Louis Co., just north of Overland. When I think about it, I wonder who owned the stable - she was about 22 yrs old. Maybe this was owned by another Callaway. I don't know. (An interesting parallel to our histories, of no value to your research, is that I was born in Overland and moved to St. Peters, where I lived in 1980.). I think Roger offered some good suggestions. There is a pretty good, but small library in Troy MO (near Elsberry) that may be able to help. The Overland library didn't have much in the way of genealogy help, if I remember right. But that was many years ago, that I tried it. I skimmed thru the S.S. index for Callaway's that may have died in that time frame since the data was supposed to go back to 1937. I saw none prior to the 50's though so I suspect these Cd's. Hopefully this will provide some clues? I'll be happy to share what I have. Maybe if you get more clues I can help. Good luck with your research. your cousin? Jim Terry, Allen, TX Jim Anyw According to [my Dad] Preston, after Bill Terry married [Ellen Nora Callaway] in 1886, he lived at Brown and Lindbergh (NW corner), in St. Louis County [just north of Overland], from about 1886 to 1890. (I believe he told me that this was a stable where they raised racing horses. I also believe he said that this was where William met Ellen Nora Callaway.) In about 1890 he moved to St. Charles Rock Road and Ashby (SE corner), where he rented 80 acres. Linda, I don't have anything in my Callaway data that shows a connection to your father. I am very sorry I can't help you. It must be frustrating not to know your grandparents' identities. I will copy this answer to the Callaway list. Perhaps someone there will know something about your family. My only suggestion, which you've probably tried, is to contact genealogy societies and libraries around Elsberry, Overland, and St. Peters, Mo. Maybe they'll have some records that will help you. The cemeteries and funeral homes at Overland should be able to tell you of any male Callaway who died around there around 1935. If you find a candidate and if Missouri will let you see his death certificate, it ought to have his wife's name. If you find a Mildred, most likely you've found your grandparents. When the 1930 census is released in another three years, check all the places you think they lived and see if you can find them. Good luck. Is there a website for the Peter Callaway line? Someone told me there was but did not send it to me. I don't know anything about the first Peter, but Peter, Jr. I think was born about 1681 and died about 1738-1739 in Somerset County, Maryland. I believe my husband's great-great grandmother, Bethanney Annie Callaway b. 1838 in Sussex County, Delaware was a descendant from that line. Anybody else working on this line that could help? Thanks. Before you send out rumors about taxes, viruses, charitable causes, etc., please check them out so you do not continue the hoax. You can check them out at www.urbanlegends.miningco.com On Wed, 26 May 1999, Congressman Jay Inslee wrote: Dear Erland: In light of our joint concern regarding Internet taxes, I wanted to warn you about another fictitious rumor currently circulating about email surcharges. The rumor states that Congress is reviewing Bill 602P sponsored by Rep. Schnell. This bill would supposedly allow the federal government to impose a 5-cent surcharge on each e-mail message delivered via the Internet. It claims that the money would be collected by Internet Service Providers and then turned over to the U.S. Postal Service. The good news is that this rumor is completely false. Bill 602P does not exist, nor is there a member of Congress named Rep. Schnell. In fact, the U.S. Postal Service does not even have the authority to place a surcharge on email messages. There is no legislation pending before the House of Representatives to levy a tax on email messages. I will continue to carefully monitor all Internet related legislation. You can be sure that I will strongly oppose any attempt to tax email messages. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at: [email protected] or by phone at: 1-800-422-5521. >> Very truly yours, JAY INSLEE Member of Congress >>

Under proposed legislation the U.S. Postal Service will be attempting to bilk email users out of "alternate postage fees". Bill 602P will permit the Federal Govt. to charge a 5 cent surcharge on every email delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington D.C. lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law. The U.S. Postal Service is claiming that lost revenue due to the proliferation of email is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad campaign "There is nothing like a letter". Since the average citizen received about 10 pieces of email per day in 1998, the cost to the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents per day, or over $180 dollars per year, above and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that this would be money paid directly to theU.S. Postal Service for a service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is democracy and non-interference. If the federal government is permitted to tamper with our liberties by adding a surcharge to email, who knows where it will end. You are already paying an exorbitant price for snail mail because of bureaucraticefficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from New York to Buffalo. If the U.S. Postal Service is allowed to tinker with email, it will mark the end of the "free" Internet in the United States. One congressman, Tony Schnell ® has even suggested a "twenty to forty dollar per month surcharge on all Internet service" above and beyond the government's proposed email charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story, the only exception being the Washingtonian which called the idea of email surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come" (March 6th 1999 Editorial. Don't sit by and watch your freedoms erode away! Send this e-mail to EVERYONE on your list, and tell all your friends and relatives to write to their congressman and say "No!" to Bill 602P. It will only take a few moments of your time, and could very well be instrumental in killing a bill we don't want.
