    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. I have a little bit of information on this line, but have never been able to link Thomas Callaway up with any other Callaway line. One gets the clue that he might be related to "old" Caleb Callaway of NC - but cannot make the connection. I have some information on Hatton W. and David W. Callaway. Hatton went to Florida, then settled in GA (Atlanta area), and David W. went to Sumner Co, TN (and later family went to a southern state - from top of head). Which one are you interested in. Sherrill U. Williams (who is just back home from the Callaway Family Assoc. annual meeting, held this year in New Orleans). -----Original Message----- From: Maryanna Callaway <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, October 19, 1999 6:48 PM Subject: Thomas Callaway >Looking for parents of Thomas Callaway (Calloway), b. 3. Hi everyone, As you may know, the theory that the Kellaway/Callaway name originates in Caillouet (pronounced Ky-oo-way) in Normandy has been proposed over the past few years. The Caillouet (and Cayouette) family in North America has not so far traced back to the village, but to an armorer in Brest in the 16th Century. The way surnames developed in France in the late mediaeval period makes it quite feasible that there could be a connection, although it will certainly be difficult to prove. There have been recently some interesting e-mail exchanges between the North American Caillouets and Kellaway/Callaways in various parts of the world. Is there anyone reading this (and especially anyone attending the Callaway reunion) who can make any documentary contributions to this discussion? Bruce Callaway from Sydney will be in Louisiana soon, and hopes to meet as many people from both sides as possible. I have opened a webpage, just a small one so far, at the following URL which explains some of the issues. I hope that others would like to contribute their thoughts and perhaps any evidence they have to further the research. http://members.tripod.co.uk/dreycott/mystery.htm Meanwhile, have a great reunion! 3. Hi all, Has anyone heard of or read "The Draper Papers"? I ask because I have read that the Callaway family is mentioned in the publication. I would love to hear from anyone with data about the Callaway family that included family members, Martha, Joel, and Francis Callaway. Martha Callaway is said to have been born in Georgia; she died October 10, 1841 in Bedford Co, TN and is buried in the Russell Family Cemetery. I understand that Martha Callaway was the daughter of Charles Callaway and Judith Early Pate. *All information has been located in a publication about the Russell family. Counties mentioned pertaining to the Callaway family have been Bedford, Giles, and Franklin in TN, and Bedford Co, VA. Looking forward to hearing responses on this! 3. In the Sunday 8/22/99 NY Daily News there was an article in the travel section on Callaway Gardens from the Sun-Sentinel. The article stated that these are a "large sprawl of lakes and gardens in west-central Georgia." Located on US 27 in Pine Mountain, Ga, an hour drive southwest from Atlanta. It's a "14,000-acre resort". It has a Butterfly center, Horticultural Center and Vegetable Garden where "PBS VICTORY GARDEN" shows are done. The article goes on to mention that "Cason J. Callaway, of the Callaway family, that made its fortune in textiles, caught up thousands of acres of depleted cotton fields and made them into the garden spot they have become." It is now an open to the public through a non-profit foundation opened since 1952. http://www.callawaygardens.com carole in nyc __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
