    1. [Callaway] John H. Callaway
    2. Joseph Zuzula, Jr.
    3. I'm looking for the parents of John H. Callaway who married Elizabeth G. Lewis, January 9, 1836 in Christian County, Kentucky. In the 1850 census of Christian County, John and Elizabeth are listed with their children Martha, William, Achilles, George, Frances, and Amanda. They moved from Kentucky to (ironically) Christian County, Illinois. Amanda married James J. Bowman and they had my great-great-grandfather, Albert Achilles Bowman. In the 1850 Census, it lists John H. Callaway as being from Virginia. I have a couple leads on who I think his parents are but I have no proof. Can anyone help? Here is my "theory": There is an Achilles Callaway who married an Elizabeth Hudson from Bedford County, Virginia. They had about 8 children and moved to Christian County, Kentucky. Because "Achilles" is such an uncommon name and John named his child the same, and they were from Virginia and moved to Chirstian County, I am thinking these could be John's parents but I have no proof! . Also, could the "H" in John's name be "Hudson?" Maybe I'm stretching...HELP! Joe Zuzula ztribe@earthlink.net

    1. Re: [Callaway] Flanders Callaway
    2. Sherrill U Williams
    3. Barbara, we do not use a complete date for the birth of Flanders Callaway because we cannot document it. We use a "date range" of 1748-1752. The only thing we have to judge his birth year is the fact that he served on a jury, July Court 1769, Bedford Co, VA. That is his first appearance in records. If the requirement for jury duty was that one must be 21 years old, that would give a possible birth date of 1748. However, people in this era may not have known precisely how old they were. Flanders' father, James Callaway, died in 1767 in Bedford Co, VA. If you are comfortable with the "December 9" part of his death date, I think the year 1752 is a better fit than 1758, in the absence of documented fact. Sherrill U. 3. Charles, We worked on the records of Bertie Co, NC and Thomas and Catherine Callaway. I believe that David, Hatton and Jonathan are definitely their sons. David ended up in Sumner Co, TN - then the family moved to other parts. Hatton moved to Leon Co, FL, then back to Henry Co, GA where he died. From top of head, I am not sure about what happened to Jonathan. The Elijah of Craven Co, NC is not from the Bertie County family - he came down from Sussex Co, DE. We have not been able to determine the origins of Thomas and Catherine of Bertie. I seem to remember that Catherine was a Williams, but don't hang your hat on that yet. I have printed off your note and will check our research notes....but please give me a week. I have many commitments for next week. 3. Beverly T. Callaway (B.T.) died in 1841 in Shelby Co. AL. His wife's name was Sabrina Jane Coker Callaway. He had one daughter, Lucy Callaway, b. March 6, 1842, Shelby Co. AL. who married William Martin Carver on January 3, 1861. They had eleven children. Who was the father of Beverly Turpin Callaway and did he have any brothers and sisters? Jobe Calloway, Willis F. Calloway, and John Calloway were listed on the estate papers of Beverly Turpin Callaway. Can anyone tell me the relationship between these Calloways and how they are connected to the Benjamin Turpin Calloway who had land patents in Dallas and Lowndes Co. in 1829, 1831, and 1834. The Callaway family is believed to have come to Alabama from GA in the 1820's. Would appreciate any help that anyone could give me on these Calloways. Charlotte G. Boykin

    3. Yes, Henry Callaway of Knox Co, MO is from Harrison Co, KY, and is the son of Abraham Callaway. Abraham is from Sussex Co, Delaware. I wish I could tell you Abraham's ancestry, but, so far, no luck on that. Abraham is mentioned in the will of William Price, dated 17 Feb 1791; prob. 1 May 1792. Price named as heirs: cousins Abraham Callaway, Elizabeth Callaway and her son Thomas Callaway. William Price also had a daughter who married Langford Boyce as named in Sussex Co Arch. Vol. A94, p 144. I have some information on Abraham Callaway's family in Harrison Co, KY that shows some other associated families. I will look this up for you, but this coming week is very busy for me. Nudge me the week after and I will look up this information for you. 3. What state do you think your step children's Callaways were from? Gertrude is not a "big" Callaway name, but I found the following in North Carolina. It shows a Gertrude as granddaughter. Ashe Co, NC 1910 Census: James N. Callaway 65 M Catherine 62 F John S. 31 M Son Single Effie 32 F Dau Single Lydia 28 F Dau Single Joseph B. 24 M Son Single Annie 21 F Dau Single Cleo 8 F GDau Gertrude 5 F GDau In 1920, Ashe Co, NC - Jefferson Twp The family consisted of James N., Catherine, Effie, Lydia and the granddaughter, Gertrude age 15, attending school. Apparently Gertrude's parents were dead, and she also probably had an older sister, Cleo, who was not in the family in 1920. If you think this has possibilities, let me know. We can back up on this family. I have looked at all the Gertrude Callaways on the 1910 census, and this is the only one connected with a James N. Callaway.
