    2. Bill Piper
    3. Hi all Callaways, Kellaways and Caillouets, I was visiting Ellis Island last week and found the long, long wall, called the American Immigrant Wall of Honor. Guess how many Callaways, Kellaways and Caillouets (or alternate spellings) are on it? None! You Americans have an opportunity to get your migrants listed in a virtual version of the same (if I understand it right). Called the Virtual Wall. I had a look at the version available at Ellis Island. Guess how many? Just one, named Irene Kelloway. Have a look at www.wallofhonor.com Here the BIG problem: you have until August 27 to act. That's right. I believe it's called Labor Day. I hope someone will manage something. Looking at the brochure, I see that it may cost something. Bill Piper (Kent, England)

    1. [Callaway] Books & Libraries!
    2. Hi, I notice that people ask for lookups & no one has the book! You can try inter library loan to get this book--for the past 20 years are more, I have gotten many genealogy books this way! :) You can also try the following: If the book(s) are out of print & the LDS library has a copy--your librarian can have the LDS make a copy of the book for your library (at your cost). LDS will make copies at minimal cost for a library but will not make copies for personal use. Hence, you make a copy of the copy when it gets to your library! Very few people know that this service exist! Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. [Callaway] William CALLAWAY- GA, TN, AL, MS, TX
    2. Sharla, I'm sorry I took so long to send this. Here's what I have on William CALLAWAY. Some of this is simply theory based on various records. If you or anyone else can provide actual documentation for these relationships, I'd really appreciate it. He's been difficult to track because he had a big case of "wanderlust." Fortunately many of his descendants are online and have shared their research with me, and lots of census and cemetery records are online now. At first all I knew about William was from the 1840 Benton Co. AL census and family traditions. I descend from his daughter Nancy Caroline, who married David HYATT. Nancy was born in GA in 1824. I knew that her mother was named Rebecca, but family researchers had given her maiden name as SCROGGINS and sent me off on a wild-goose chase for many years. Then someone sent me info that a William CALLAWAY married a Rebecca COGGIN in 1816 in Morgan Co. GA, and things began to fall in place. However, I believe that William was married once before he married Rebecca. For one thing, marrying for the first time (in 1816) at age 29 would have been quite unusual for those days. Not impossible, but unusual. Also, census records show that Rebecca was quite a bit younger than William (she was born 1794-1800), which is common for second marriages. Also, the 1820 Warren Co. TN census shows two sons born 1810-1819. One was Isaac, b. ca 1819. More about him later. The other one is still a mystery. The 1830 Newton Co. GA census says he was born 1800-1809. Yes, he could have been a brother or some other person. But a first marriage for William in about 1807-1808 would have made a lot of sense. As I mentioned in my previous message, I still have to look into this. I still think he may have been Beverly Turpin CALLAWAY, whose widow married Allen GENTRY and lived in MS with these folks. Beverly was born before 1808 because he supposedly bought land in AL in 1829. Again, more research is needed. There was also a daughter born 1815-1820, so she could have been a product of William's first marriage or, more likely, Rebecca's daughter. I still don't know, and I don't know anything about this girl yet, except that she was alive in 1830. She either married or died by 1840 because she wasn't living with William. William was probably the son of Obadiah CALLAWAY and his wife _____ DENNIS. Obadiah moved to Hancock Co. GA sometime between 1790 and 1800. He was in Salisbury, Guilford Co. NC in 1790, and William was probably born there. Obadiah died in Hancock Co. GA in 1800. William, as Obadiah's orphan, was eligible to draw a lot in the 1807 GA Land Lottery while living in Hancock Co. He drew land in Wilkinson (now Telfair) Co. GA and took up this land 2 Aug 1808, probably when he'd reached age 21 (meaning he was born ca 1787, which matches census records). An 1808 Morgan Co. GA tax list shows he was paying tax on 2 tracts of land he owned in Morgan Co. GA and also on the land he owned in Wilkinson (later Telfair) Co. GA. One Morgan Co. GA tract contained 68 acres and the other 102 acres on H___ Creek adjoining ______ BONNER, granted to "unknown." I don't know if William fought in the War of 1812, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. I need to check those records. He moved to Warren Co. TN sometime between 1816 and 1819 (assuming he was an actual GA resident when he married there in 1816). Sometime between 1820 and 1830 he moved to Newton Co. GA. In December 1831 William sold his Newton Co. GA land. He appears to have migrated to Ackerman, Winston Co. MS and in August 1835 he was a founding member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. He doesn't appear to have stayed for very long. He doesn't appear on other church records or Winston Co. MS records. This supports my theory that he moved back east to AL for a few years (maybe to live with his adult sons after his wife died? maybe his crops failed?), then returned to MS ca 1842-1844 (William and his family had moved to MS by February 1844 because his son Isaac's daughter Lettie was born in MS that month. William Sr., Isaac's wife Asenath, and William J. were charter members of the Antioch Baptist Church in Louisville, Winston Co. MS in April 1844). William appears on the 1850 Ackerman, Choctaw Co. MS census. Living three households away was Allen GENTRY, whose wife Sabrina was the widow of Beverly T. CALLAWAY. Living next-door to Allen was William's son J.H.W. CALLAWAY. Living near-by were Isaac GENTRY (was he related to Allen?) and William's sons Jesse and William J. CALLAWAY. William married a third time in 1839 in Benton Co. AL to Hannah DAVIS, who was quite a bit younger than him and outlived him. They had no children together. In 1860 William had moved to Springfield, Limestone Co. TX. He died there sometime before 1870. Hannah appears as head-of-household on the 1870 census there, but I haven't seen the actual record yet. I'd like to find his death record and burial place. William's children were: by 1st wife (m. 1807-1810, where?) 1. son b. ca 1809 by Rebecca COGGIN m. 1816 Morgan Co. GA 2. daughter b. 1815-1820, m. 1830-1840 3. Isaac b. ca 1819 in TN, m. ______ ca 1838 in AL & m. Asenath GRAHAM in 1839 in Benton Co. AL, d. 1880-1900 in Louisville, Winston Co. MS 4. Elizabeth b. 1822 in GA, m. John R. GRAHAM in 1839 in Benton Co. AL, d. 1899 in Annison, Calhoun Co. AL 5. Nancy Caroline b. 1824 in GA, m. David HYATT in 1841 in Benton Co. AL, d. 1891 in Blount Co. AL 6. William J. b. ca 1826 in GA, m. Bathsheba McKENZIE ca 1849 in MS, d. aft 1870 7. J. H. W. b. ca 1828 in GA, m. Susan A. ____ ca 1850 in MS, d. aft 1860 8. Jesse b. ca 1830 in GA, m. Letitia COKER ca 1849 in MS, d. 1862-1870 3rd wife, Hannah DAVIS No children I know this is a bit disjointed, but I hope you can make sense of it. I will post info on William's children separately. Take care. Vickie Elam White

    1. [Callaway] Joseph CALLOWAY-Nicolites
    2. Hi CALLAWAY Cousins, I thought this info on Joseph CALLOWAY & the NICOLITES may be of interest to anyone researching him! Happy hunting, Helen Hi Helen, NICOLS (NICHOLS) and CALLAWAY/CALLOWAY are both Nicolite names. I do know that there was a Joseph CALLOWAY mentioned in one record. Kenneth L. Carroll, in at least one of his articles wrote that Joseph Nicols (wife: Mary Tumlin) had 2 children, a son, Isaac (who was affirmed and died young) ... and a daughter (can't remember exactly which dau. he mentioned right now, but think it was Rhoda). However, in the Nicolite records I found 3 children listed for Joseph & Mary: Rhoda, b: March 8, 1756; Isaac, b: Jan. 22, 1758 and Rachel, b: Sept. 5, 1763. All records that I've found so far indicate that the Nicolites ceased to exist around 1796-98 on the Eastern Shore (they had sold their MM house to the Quakers.) However, many did migrate to Guilford Co, NC (the last few stragglers went there ca:1800), and are said to have practiced the religion until about 1805 (I believe these may have been the old "die-hards" and they did it until they died? <g>) MANY of the families who stayed on the Eastern Shore converted to Quakerism (Third Haven MM.) Many families who migrated to NC also did, but some not as well. There was also a VERY suspicious Isaac NICOLS who was instrumental in purchasing the Nicolite Meeting House in Guilford that I have often wondered about. However, even if he was Joseph & Mary's son, he probably wouldn't be of any help to you unless he went back to MD/DE. Knowing how the Nicolites did not keep records, I am wondering if Joseph and Mary did have more children. However, Mary married a CHARLES (think Levin, without looking at my notes) and migrated to NC also... in fact, think ca: 1770 - 1780. My ancestor, John PAVEY (wife Mary(?) ANDERSON, dau. of James & Elizabeth ANDERSON, Nicolites ... the ANDERSONs were from Kent Co, DE ... PAVEYs were on the 1790 Caroline Co, MD. census) seemed to be 'selling out' in 1792. There was a NICOLS mentioned in those papers. PAVEYs were in Guilford by 1800 (many of these ANDERSONs also migrated there.) I've been trying to do something with some of the NICOLS, also ... but they're tough!!! :-) Sorry for the novel. Wish I could have been of some help. Marsha -----Original Message----- From: HMWEBBER@aol.com [mailto:HMWEBBER@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2000 7:01 AM To: rmmcw@effingham.net Subject: Re: RE: [DESUSSEX] Nicholite Birth Records Hi Marsha, Would you know if an Elizabeth NICHOLS, b. abt, 1800-1810, in I believe, Kent Co., DE, could be a granddaughter of Joseph NICHOLS (NICOLITES)? Elizabeth m. Levin CALLAWAY, Mar 1829 in Kent Co., DE. Or could she be a grand niece--thank you for any help you can give me! Happy hunting, Helen P.S. "Joseph NICHOLS & The NICOLITES of CAROLINE Co., MD" was published in "MARYLAND HISTORICAL MAGAZINE," Vol. XLV, pg. 47, (1950). In a message dated 7/16/0 12:15:31 AM, rmmcw@effingham.net writes: << Paul, Nicolite birth records are on FTM's cd #178, CHURCH RECORDS, MD and DE, 1600's - 1800's. I believe the originals may still be housed in the MD State Archives. The Nicolites (unlike the Quakers, of which they were a lot alike), did not believe in much record keeping, nor much education. They feared it would interfere with the "inner light" too much. After Joseph Nicols, the Founder, died (Dec., 1770), they did start to keep a few more records. I study and research the Nicolites. What surname are you looking for? Marsha McWilliams >>

    3. Henry Callaway of Knox Co., MO was the son of Abraham Callaway of Harrison Co., KY. Abraham died in Harrison County as a very aged man. He came to KY from Sussex Co., DE (territory formerly Somerset Co., MD). We have a weak link from Abraham Callaway to the immigrant ancestor, Peter Callaway, Sr We believe he is a son of either Samuel Callaway, or Thomas Callaway, both of whom were sons of Peter Callaway & his wife Sarah. He is in some way related to a William Polk whose will is recorded in Sussex Co., DE. Visit the website of The Callaway Family Association, Inc at: <http://www.callawayfamily.org> You will find census records there showing Abraham Callaway in Harrison Co., KY. 3. Hi folks, Beverly Turpin Callaway belonged to the family of Job & Polly Milner Callaway of Coosa/Autauga Co., AL area. I believe B.T. was a grandson of Job. Job came to Alabama very early, before statehood. He was a son of John & Bethany Arnold Callaway of Wilkes Co., GA (whose ancestry goes to Peter Callaway of Somerset Co., MD). John & Bethany Arnold Callaway came to GA from the Anson/ Montgomery Co, NC area in 1783, and prior to that they were in Onslow Co., NC. There is some remote relationship between John/Bethany family, and the Jesse Callaway of Anderson Co, TX. 1. [Callaway] Jesse CALLAWAY b. ca 1854
    2. Sharla, We have a winner! I show Jesse and Lettie on the 1860 census of Magnolia, Anderson Co. TX with 6 children. Next-door to him was his brother William J. (some family researchers say his middle name was Jackson, others say John; I've not seen any actual name, only the initial). They had a daughter Sarah born ca 1862. Then Jesse died 1862-1870 (in the Civil War, maybe?), and Lettie appears on the 1870 Palestine, Anderson Co. TX census as a widow with 6 children. Also living with them were William EVANS age 21 b. TX and Mary E. EVANS age 24 b. TX. Were they relatives of Jesse or Lettie? Jesse's brother William was also still in Anderson Co. TX that year, but I don't have his census record. Do you? Do you know when and where Jesse died? Where did you find his middle name? I didn't have that. Was Lettie related to Sabrina Jane COKER, wife of Beverly Turpin CALLAWAY? They supposedly married in Shelby Co. AL in 1839. He died in 1841 and Sabrina remarried to Allen GENTRY in Shelby Co. AL in 1844. In 1850 Sabrina and Allen were living very near Jesse CALLAWAY and his brothers and father in Choctaw Co. MS. I have been told that Beverly Turpin CALLAWAY was from a different branch and that it is probably a coincidence that they lived near each other in MS, but I'm not totally convinced of that and want to explore it further. Jesse did have a brother (actually a half-brother, probably) who was about the same age as this Beverly Turpin. So... By the way, Jesse was born in GA not AL. His father William appears on the 1830 Newton Co. GA census. I believe he was the William CALLAWAY who was on the 1820 Warren Co. TN census. In 1840 William was in Benton Co. AL (which became Calhoun Co.) I have not found a "smoking gun" sort of document that actually names William's children. All my theories are based on census records, some cemetery records, migration patterns, naming patterns, etc. It would be wonderful if you had some sort of actual documentation that links Jesse to William. Do you? I will send William CALLAWAY's info in a separate message. I've found a lot of info since posting my 1999 message so it would be good to summarize. Sherrill Williams, the Callaway Family Association's genealogist, has been a terrific help.
