    3. Does anyone have information on Larkin Callaway Sr. He is on the 1880 Bosque Co. TX Census. Could he possibly be the brother of Matthew D. Callaway. Matthew's widow and some of his children were also living in Bosque Co. TX in 1880 Gayle

    1. Matthew D. Callaway
    2. Gayle
    3. Still looking for the mother and siblings of Matthew D. Callaway. I believe that the "D" in Matthews name stands for Derrixson. There was information submitted for a early McWhorter book that Sarah Glenn McWhorter had married Derrixson Galloway. Well we know she married Matthew D. Callaway. Maybe he went by his middle name around family? I have a copy of the pages of the Bible that belonged to Matthew's wife Sarah Glenn McWhorter and it lists a William W. Callaway born January 24, 1776 died February 1860. I do not know where he was born or died but have been told he died in Scott Co. MS. I believe that William was Matthew's father. There is no listing for a possible mother. Maybe she had died prior to Sarah getting the bible or maybe she did not know her. I have also never been able to locate a marriage record for Matthew and Sarah. Does anyone know when and where they were married. I have posted the information from the Bible on my web site at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gtriller/index.html Thanks, Gayle

In reference to Job(e) Callaway being the son of John and Bethany Arnold Callaway, John is descended from the Peter Callaway line of Somerset Co., MD. In reference to Gad Callaway, he is descended from the Joseph Callaway line of Essex Co., VA. Gene Callaway

    1. Callaway Baptist Preachers, 1789-1953
    2. SHERRILL U WILLIAMS
    3. I have been away from home, but on my return I noticed a number of emails regarding the book, "Callaway Baptist Preachers, 1789-1953," by Timothy Walton Callaway, DD. The book was copyrighted in 1953 and published the same year by the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation, LaGrange, GA. Timothy Walton Callaway, DD, was a descendant of Isaac Callaway, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Barrett, of Wilkes Co., GA. The parents of Isaac Callaway, Jr. were Isaac, Sr. & Elizabeth Arnold Callaway of Montgomery Co., NC. The introductory material in this book is very full of ERROR. All would do well to ignore that material. The correct ancestral lineages of these Callaway Baptist Preachers have been proven over the last 25+ years by the Callaway Family Association, Inc., and the lineages are posted (some still in the process of being prepared for posting) on the CFA website at www.callawayfamily.org The actual biographies of these Baptist preachers were submitted to T.W. Callaway by their descendants, and in later cases, by the preachers themselves. The early biographies are mostly provable civil and church records. However, all these Baptist preachers descend from two Callaway ancestors: Peter Callaway, immigrant to Somerset Co., MD and Joseph Callaway, immigrant to Essex Co, VA. The Wilkes Co., GA preachers descend from Peter Callaway of Maryland. In this "preachers book" mention is made of Thomas Callaway of Charles Co., VA as a probable ancestor. That possibility has been disproven. Thomas C. of Charles City Co., VA "died in this country with no heirs" and his land grant was escheated to the Crown - due to lack of no heirs. The land was then granted to another person. Someone responded to the notes on the Baptist preachers with the information of descending from John & Bethany Arnold Callaway of Wilkes Co., GA, through their son, Job(e) who moved to Coosa/Autauga Co., AL. That is true, but Job(e)'s wife was Mary (known as Polly) MILNER (not SMITH), and they were married in either Wilkes or Oglethorpe Co., GA. Further mention was made to "Gad" Callaway with the statement that his name was probably shortened from "Gadston." That is not true. Gad Callaway's name was really GADDAH Callaway, and he was named for his mother who bore the surname GADDAH. So, please be cautious when using old published material on the Callaway family. Most of it contains these errors, researched (if at all) during a time when records were not readily available, and contacts between researchers were more difficult. I am sorry that I will have little time to respond to questions about these matters. The CFA English Research Team is leaving August 31 for another month of research in English records - on the search for the ancestry of Peter Callaway of Maryland and Joseph Callaway of Virginia. Time is getting shorter and shorter. Thanks, Sherrill U Williams, Genealogist, CFA, Inc. SherrillUWilliams@prodigy.net

    1. Re: Gaddah, Francis II, Francis I, Joseph Callaway line
    2. Dear Alba, When you referred to the "31 Callaway Preachers", you may have been talking about my booklet called "CALLAWAY BAPTIST PREACHERS 1789-1953" published in 1953 by Timothy Walton Callaway, D.D. --- First Baptist Church St. Andrews Parish , Charleston, SC. It was published in 1953 by the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation in LaGrange, GA (Troupe Co). Most of these preachers were descendants of the four sons of Thomas Callaway--John, Jacob, Joseph, and Isaac who went to Halifax Co. NC and later to Wilkes Co. GA. in 1783. I counted 20-25 ministers listed in the booklet published by the Callaway Family Foundation. My lineage is thru the Job (or Jobe) Callaway line--parents were John and Bethany Arnold of NC in 1770. Jobe married Mary Smith and moved to Wilkes Co. GA. They later moved from Wilkes Co. GA to Chambers and Autauga Co. AL and last to Coosa Co. AL about 50 miles north of Montgomery, AL--town of Weogufka. (Ben Callaway and Polly Ann Melton who had 20 children.). My grandmother was Missouri Iltiny Callaway--daughter of Josiah Callaway-- (Rev. Benjamin William Callaway's brother). In one of the notes, it mentioned that a son of Rev. Francis Callaway (of Wilkes Co) was a Rev. William Gadston Callaway and his grandson, Rev. Francis Gadston Callaway. I think the nickname "Gad" probably is short for "Gadston". A lot of the Callaways went to MO and IL and some are descendants of Col. Richard Callaway who accompanied Daniel Boone from NC to KY along with Col. Samuel Henderson-- ! who married one of Daniel Boone's daughters. I think that I sent Toni Callaway a copy of my Preacher's booklet about a year ago. Sorry that I have no info linking your Gideon and Frances Green to the Callaways or Calloway lines............................... Sincerely, Mickey L. Smith---Huntsville, AL
