    1. Oliver P. Calloway
    2. Philip Sonnichsen
    3. I am researching Oliver P. Calloway/Callaway, a Civil Engineer who lived in San Diego in the 19th century and who was killed by a Chemehuevi Indian in the Palo Verde Valley (along the lower Colorado River near Blythe, California)on March 28, 1880. I know a good bit about his murder by "Big Bill" and a bit about his professional career -- building a "turnpike" from San Diego to Fort Yuma, for example -- but nothing about him personally. According to the San Diego Union he had a son born November 18, 1870, but the newspaper did not give the wife or the son's name. If anyone can put me in touch with one of his descendants I would be most grateful. Thank you. I have Nancy's siblings as: Jeremiah C., Archibald, Elizabeth, William Burl, Susan, Esquire, Sarah, George Washington, and Josiah Isaiah Callaway. After the birth of Jeremiah, which happened just before his father (and Nancy's) died, their mother remarried to Joel Cooper. Since they were both born in Virginia, I think it's likely they were cousins. Of course, there could be children I don't have.

    1. CALLAWAY/KELLAWAY INTERNATIONAL MEETING
    2. Bill Piper
    3. Hello all Kellaways and Callaways, Recently, on 23rd September 2001, there was a meeting in Richmond, London, of researchers of the Kellaway and Callaway names. This was truly historic for those of us interested in the history of our family, a history which stretches 850 years to the present day. On the one hand there were three genealogical researchers from the Callaway Family Association who were working that week at the Public Record Office at Kew. Funded by the CFA, they have been searching through record offices in the west of England for the provenance of the Callaway families of North America. In so doing they have amassed a wealth of information about the history of the Callaway/Kellaway names over several centuries. Then there was Warwick Kellaway from New Zealand who expostulates a descent from Caillouet of France and whose researches into the history family may be seen summarized on http://members.tripod.co.uk/dreycott/chronicl.htm There was also Brian Willoughby of Gloucestershire, England, whose research has spread from Kelways of Saltash, Devon, to a large collection of information, and in particular an encyclopaedic knowledge of Kellaway memorials in England. This has happened in the same year that a new international initiative has been adopted by the CFA, to share and to encompass the work of all interested researchers. A pictorial record of the meeting may be seen at http://members.tripod.co.uk/dreycott/richmond.htm with a list of all the participants. This was a meeting, a family gathering, where many of the participants had never previously met, but once introductions had been made, there was non-stop talk - about genealogy - for three hours. Apart from being great fun, I believe that it was a very valuable step in our knowledge of the family.
