    1. [CALHOUN] CALHOUN-HALE
    2. Greetings! I am new to the list and wanted to share my genealogy with you. I am researching the surname of CALHOUN and HALE in Kentucky. I have Elizabeth HALE, d/o John HALE and Sarah MOSLEY; married Samuel MOSLEY Child-- Minvera MOSLEY married a William CALHOUN and they are listed in the 1880 Floyd County Census Records. They had a daughter, Maggie CALHOUN who married William HALE s/o Nellie HALE CALHOUN (she also married a William CALHOUN but I don't believe it's the same William) and Tandy S. HAMILTON. William MOSLEY and Minerva CALHOUN MOSLEY are my gg grandparents and so are Nellie HALE CALHOUN and her husband William CALHOUN. Does anyone have any infomation on what happened to William and Minerva MOSLEY CALHOUN after the 1880 Floyd County Census Records as they seemed to have "disappeared" after that. I do have a genealogy site online if anyone cares to visit my site. Please drop me a line if you do. I can always use your help and any suggestions you may have to make my site better. The url address is: http://members.aol.com/aslaton300/index.htm Thanks! Sherri Hale Slaton

    1. [CALHOUN] Using the Mail list archives
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. This might be a good article to save, also. Rootsweb has so many resources at our fingertips, it is difficult sometimes to use them all systematically in our research. These articles help keep it all straight. As promised, part two by Bob Tillman. -Valorie o FIND UNTOLD RICHES IN THE MAILING LIST ARCHIVES. Last week, we systematically searched RootsWeb for the surname Mittelstadt. (You can find this very helpful template for searching all major RootsWeb resources in the December 29, 1999 issue of RootsWeb Review, located in the RootsWeb Review Archives as 19991229.txt at <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/>.) One of the areas that requires a more detailed explanation is how to search the Mailing List Archives. Currently, there exist messages in the Mailing List Archives 7.7 million e-mails from RootsWeb's 15,000+ archived mailing lists. Some of these messages date back to 1987. Many messages, even those a decade old, contain vital genealogical information. There are currently two ways to search these messages. The Mailing List Threaded Archives contains 2.2 million of the most recent e-mail messages from all of RootsWeb's archived mailing lists. One can search all of these messages with a single search at <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/search.html> The Interactive Search of Mailing Lists provides access to all 7.7 million e-mail messages in the Mailing List Archives; however, the search process is more labor intensive. One must perform a separate search for each mailing list and for each year that such mailing list is archived. In addition, one must first know the name of the mailing list that one wishes to search. All genealogy-related mailing lists on RootsWeb are located at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/>. In addition to surname related lists there are regional, country, state, county, ethnic group, and topic-related lists. Once a list is located, the user can search it one year at a time at <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl>. Do not forget to search all the years for which the list has been archived. When choosing a promising list to search, it pays to be creative and thorough. When looking for a particular ancestor, check out not only surname-related lists but also lists that relate to country of origin, places of habitation, migration routes, ethnic group, UseNet NewsGroup topics, and general interest topics (such as the Roots-L list at <http://searches.rootsweb.com/roots-l.html>). Wonderful gems turn up in the most unlikely places. Nevertheless, please remember that one must often mine a great deal of ore in order to find a diamond. Good luck and good hunting! 3. via PML -------- Original Message -------- Subject: PML Search Result Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 12:49:38 -0800 From: tony colhoun <tcolhoun@powercom.com.au> . Source: GC-Tyrone Ireland Queries URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Ireland/Tyrone?read=840 Subject: colhoun 1700 - 1800s Surname: colhoun, colquhoun ------------------------- I am a descendent of Samuel Colhoun (1803-1875) born probably at “Teeronail” a property at Lifford, Co. Donegal, Ire. He died at Omagh, Co. Tyrone, his family home then being called Lisanelly House. He and his siblings, and possibly others of his family, were buried at the Old Burial Ground near the Presbyterian Church at St Johnstone, Co Donegal. The names of his parents are unknown but his mother may have been a Buchannan (perhaps from a previous marriage) and she probably died 1858 age 96. Samuel’s siblings were Matthew, James, John and Frances Jane. Matthew’s children were William James, Robert, Matthew Jnr, Joseph, George and Ann Jane. They were living at Sunderland, Eng.in 1903. I think Joseph (name changed to Colquhoun) died in Sunderland in the early 70’s aged c.92 or 93. James married, lived in London and spelled his name Colquhoun. John and Frances Jane didn’t marry and were apparently living at Teeronail when they died, as was Matthew. Samuel Colhoun(and brother James) lived in Port Spain Trinidad in early 1840’s. Samuel married Caroline Lison. They had three children, John (1845-1917), Samuel Jnr (1847-1913) and a girl probably named Frances (d. 1855/6?) John Colhoun and Samuel Colhoun Jnr left Trinidad 1855 and after a period in Glasgow joined their father in Ireland. Samuel Colhoun Jnr went to live at Buncrana, Co Donegal. He had one son, Samuel Lipson Colhoun, who married twice and had ten children. Some remained in Buncrana, others went to Keighley (Yorkshire). When he went to Canada in 1913 he took Ernest, his oldest son, with him. Ernest stayed there when Samuel Lipson returned to Ireland. John Colhoun was my great-great-grandfather.He migrated to Melbourne, Aust. in 1865 and married Elizabeth Millington of Cheshire, Eng. within a week of arrival. They had eight children of whom six survived childhood. I am descended from John through his oldest surviving son, Samuel Ernest Spearman Colhoun (1868-1925), his oldest son, Ernest Harry Lanfear Colhoun (1897-1980) and his second son, Desmond Lawrence Colhoun (b. 1926) I assume that my family has descended from a member of the Colquhoun Clan who went to northern Ireland as part of the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century. And that, regardless of how he spelled his name at that time, his descendants adopted the Ulster spelling “Colhoun” along with the other clan members by the end of that century. I am trying to fill the gap between Samuel Colhoun of Omagh and that descendent who moved from Scotland to Ireland, probably Co. Donegal. I am also interested in knowing about others who may be related to members of his family.

    3. It has been sometime since I posted my family so I thought I would list them again. CHARLES CALHOUN arrived in boston in December 1949 from Dublin County according to his naturalization papers. From his death certificate his father was GEORGE CALHOUN, born in England, and his mother SOPHIA FRASER, born in Scotland. I would like to find anything on George and Sophia. I have lots of information once Charles arrived in Boston but don't know where to start in Ireland as civil records didn't start until 1864 and without more info can't trace thru church records. 3. Save this one! Bob Tillman has written a two-part series on how best to utilize Rootsweb's search engines. Here is part one. Part two, searching mail list archives, I'll send tomorrow. -Valorie o SEARCH AND YE SHALL FIND. I recently received e-mail from a Mittelstadt researcher who complained that he could not find his family tree on RootsWeb and indicated that he was off to use one of the commercial subscription sites. I took his message as a challenge and searched for the Mittelstadt surname on RootsWeb. I made the assumption that he was interested only in the spelling Mittelstadt and did not search for variations. We show below the results of various searches on RootsWeb; however, RootsWeb is much more than a giant search engine that is used to brag about how many "names" it has. It is a community of avid genealogists and volunteers who interact with and help others daily on RootsWeb's 17,000+ mailing lists, 140,000+ message boards, and hundreds of other volunteer genealogical projects hosted on our servers. These people are the heart and soul of RootsWeb, contributing their unique talents and time in many ways to aid you in your genealogical quest The following list is a template for doing a search on all of RootsWeb's search engines. To follow the same process, simply click on the URLs listed below. The Mittelstadt surname results (the scores shown after each URL) are for Sunday, 26 December 1999. New material is added to RootsWeb every day, so be sure to repeat your searches regularly. The information you have been looking for these past 45 years might be uploaded somewhere on RootsWeb five seconds after you've completed a search that came up empty. In my most recent publication there is an article on Sir Roger de Kirkpatrick. He was the eldest son of Stephen Kirkpatrick, Lord of Closeburne. The names Kirkpatrick and Kilpatrick were often interchanged by early historians working from old charters. Most of these charters were written in Latin and the word "celle" was used for "church." This is similar to the Gaelic word "cil" meaning small church. So it is not unusual to find in historical references the name Kilpatrick and Kirkpatrick applied to the same person. Another article is about Ben Kilpatrick who drew attention by being a member of the outlaw gang led by Butch Cassidy, the "Wild Bunch." Ben was called "The Tall Texan" and was considered a ladies man; tall, soft spoken, had deep brown eyes and dark wavy hair. If anyone wants to know more about this let me know and I'll elaborate for you. Lastly, I received my newest catalog from Heritage Books (phone 1-800-398-7709). To my surprise there was a book there of great interest and I ordered it today: "Colquhoun/Calhoun and Their Ancestral Homelands by Ellen R. Johnson (1996). This volume contains legendary data about the beginning of this family, detailed information on the line of Chiefs of the Colquhoun Clan with data on the spouses and children where known, a separate chapter concerning the Camstradden lineage, and several chapters telling of the life in the Luss and Rossdhu areas of Scotland. There is also an appendix with various names of births, marriages, and deaths. The time span covered is 1190-1993, in primarily Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and the US. 252 pgs, illus., index, paper, $24 (plus s & h) #J532 I can't wait to receive my copy. 2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. I wanted to write an individual greeting to each of the lists I administer, but my time has run out! It is almost 3am of New Years Eve, and as I listened to the BBC World Service, folks out in the Pacific began celebrating the new millenium. I will leave the 2000/2001 debate to others, and simply wish all of you my very best in the coming year. We are fortunate in so many ways, but I feel especially blessed by each one of you list members I have been lucky enough to correspond with. My hope is that this next year, each one of you will make a breakthrough in your research, and that you will each find a new cousin. Last year, I came across some genealogical New Years resolutions, which I will share with you now. If each of us does all of these, we will be pro-level genealogists/family historians in no time! Happy New Year, Valorie 1) I will get in touch with as many relatives as I can and gather as much information as possible from them. 2) I will enter all of my correspondence, research, and requests in a research log. 3) Using my research log, I will inventory all the records I have requested/available for each family and request the records I still need. 4) I will check my research log and follow up on any inquiries that are overdue for a response. 5) I will make a list of libraries and archives that I have been intending to visit and plan a trip to them. 6) I will plan a trip to my local LDS Family History Center and become more familiar with their many offerings. 7) I will read more on the history of my ancestors' hometown, home city, and homeland so that I can gain further insight into their lives and possibly find some clues as to reasons for migration, and where additional records may be found. 8) I will read more genealogical journals and periodicals, to learn more strategies and to keep current with news items that will affect my research. 9) I will make copies and/or photos, or photocopies of those old, irreplaceable photos and memorabilia. This includes diary pages, Bible pages, heirlooms, and correspondence. I will then share these copies with other family members so that all of these valuable items are not in one location in case of disaster. 10) I will also catalog all of these items and later expand it to include artifacts held by other family members. 11) I will also put names and dates on all of our current family photographs so that future generations will not have to wonder who is in the picture. 12) I will donate some time to my local genealogical/historical society to help with a worthwhile project. I know that by volunteering, many times I have learned something new that has helped my in my own research, besides giving me that warm, fuzzy feeling of accomplishment. 13) I will investigate all of the newly available resources available on the Internet and through various genealogical programs. 14) I will begin and maintain a separate research log for web sites that I have searched, and make a note of the results. 15) I will make sure my email address is up-to-date with any web site I have submitted a GEDCOM file or queries to, so that all those long-lost cousins out there in cyberspace can find me. 16) I will make sure that all my sources have been properly cited in the GEDCOM files that have been submitted to the Rootsweb WorldConnect or other collections. If not, I will update my files and send in replacement files. 17) I will backup my computer and send these backups to a remote location so that in the event of fire, flood or some other disaster, my work will not be lost. 18) I will update all of my virus software so that my valuable family files will not be lost. 19) I will make sure my computer programs and equipment are Y2K (Year 2000) compliant. (Better get to work on this one TODAY!!!) 20) I will find great satisfaction in the fact that I have helped preserve the stories of those individuals who have contributed to my existence.

But while you will see new cousins, friends, and contacts coming on-line, joining email lists, posting surnames, they will be asking questions you have seen posted over and over again. Unfortunate as it may be, new users mean we have to reinvent the wheel once again. Please WELCOME these "newbies" to our list, have PATIENCE with them, help them and above gently teach them the rules by not overreacting. You can help them further by refraining from using a lot of initials and abbreviations in your responses. When discussing the FHC, please take a few seconds to type "Family History Center". Be sure to explain who, what, where, when, and once in awhile how. Don't assume. It cannot be overstressed how important your patience and help will be for the next month or more. Mistakes will be made ... there will be blank messages, no subject lines, or (my pet peeve) entire digest in replies. There will be subject lines like "Searching for "Smittie" Smith, ("Johnny Johnson"), ("Aunt Mary") send all information." This is a good list and it is about helping each other. Let's be specific and clear in our responses to folks, and give a little extra in explanations. And, above all, please keep in mind, that new subscribers may know nothing about computers, the internet, and genealogy, resulting in many extremely inexperienced researchers. If you see questions regarding computers, software, etc, please respond to these questions off list if at all possible. Remember, you are the experienced one, the knowledgeable, the mentor. You can teach by example, as well as explicitly. If something not allowed slips through to the list, please let it go by without response by you. I will take care of it from this side. If it happens twice by the same person, please just contact me personally to see if I am aware of it. <valoriez@aa.net> REMEMBER one of these "newbies" just may have the proof you have been looking for for thirty years ... so be cordial, helpful, and informative as you can be! Thank you for helping to make and keep this an excellent list of helpfulness. Happy Holidays, Everyone.

    3. This list looked really handy to have on hand while our list traffic is down for the holidays. When you have an extra minute online, use a search engine you've never used before! Successes related to our list surname are *always* on topic! -- Valorie o SEARCH ROOTSWEB DATABASES. If you have not used RootsWeb's numerous search engines recently, you will be pleasantly surprised by the large amount of new material that will turn up. (Be patient, we are working on a site-wide search engine.) Below is a list of the major search facilities at RootsWeb that should help you in your explorations. There are many resources on RootsWeb not included in these searches. The fragmented nature of the various search facilities is explained by the fact that RootsWeb consists of many different genealogy projects that have developed independently since 1987. 3. About viruses. I'm sure you have all heard that a bunch of new virii/worms are on the loose. PLEASE remember that attachments NEVER come from Rootsweb mail lists. It is impossible. Unfortunately, these newest breed hi-jack the unknowing sender's "sent" file to forge fake return addresses! and even fake (copied) subject lines. If it has an attachment, it is NOT from a Rootsweb mail list -- delete it. And make sure you have *recently* updated your virus software. The attempt that I got, looked like this: =============== http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html> http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html Hypercool Happy New Year 2000 funny programs and animations... 3. Many of you do not receive Rootsweb Review, and I felt today's announcements were crucial for each one of you. Please delete if you have already read this material -- and most important, if you are already a Rootsweb member, and have uploaded your GEDCOM to GenConnect! ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE CEO, by Robert R. Tillman o Has RootsWeb helped you this year? If so, please contribute to its support. Only 25,000 of RootsWeb's 1.7 million monthly users, fewer than two percent, contribute financially to RootsWeb. During this holiday season, help us pass on to others the kind of benefits you have received. <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> Mailing address: RootsWeb.com, Inc., P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798. (Please write your e-mail address on all correspondence and checks.) When you become a RootsWeb contributor or upgrade to the $24/year level you gain access to RootsWeb's new Personalized Mailing List. PML <http://pml.rootsweb.com/> allows you to enter multiple complex search terms and receive daily notification by e-mail of any new post that matches those search terms on any of RootsWeb's nearly 15,000 archived mailing lists, 140,000 message boards, and 770,000 RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) entries. This magnificent tool is RootsWeb's "thank you" to its financial contributors. o As of today, users have uploaded 9.6 million names to RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project, but our goal is 12 million names by the end of the year. Help us reach the goal. FamilyTreeMaker.com claims that there are 85 million names (100,000+ GEDCOMs) uploaded to its World Family Tree. Kindred Konnections claims that there are 43 million names uploaded to its Ancestral Archive. However, to access these names, you must either buy a subscription or a CD. Users who cannot or will not pay to access your GEDCOM will not make a connection with you and, when you upload a GEDCOM to these projects, you lose control of your data. In contrast, you can revise or remove your GEDCOM on RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project at any time and RootsWeb will never burn it onto a CD or charge others to access it. In addition, RootsWeb is the largest traffic genealogy community on the Web. Researchers will FIND your GEDCOM at RootsWeb. So why are you waiting to upload your GEDCOM to the FREE RootsWeb WorldConnect Project when you have already uploaded it to sites SELLING access? You have the GEDCOM ready. Uploading it to the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project is fast and easy. Every day you wait is a day that you might miss a breakthrough in your research. You can search the names already uploaded, upload your own GEDCOM, or find more detailed answers to your questions regarding the WorldConnect Project at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/> Written by <Robert R.
