    3. I'm hard at work putting together the nucleus of our list websites. For part of the site, I'm building a page of links -- Rootsweb, Other Research Sites, and Search Engines. Please feel free to email me off-list with any suggestions! While checking out <http://searches.rootsweb.com/htdig/search.html>, which searches webpages at Rootsweb (mostly US GenWeb Archives, that I saw), I was stunned by how much more material there is than the last time I checked this site! Colquhoun had 30 hits, Cahoon 356! Calhoon *415*! Calhoun, an astounding 3371! Good thing you can refine the searches! If you haven't looked this one over lately, click right on over. But don't forget to drop me an email with your favorite sites and search engines. <mailto:valoriez@aa.net> Valorie

    3. I checked out a very comprehensive site tonight, the New River Valley Notes at <http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm>. One very nifty feature is the ability to search the entire site. On a search for Calhoun, I got 64 'hits' -- too many to list here. Worth a look, wouldn't you say? The search engine allows you to narrow your search, also. Valorie

    3. =========================================================== DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR REJECTED PENSIONS During America's struggle for freedom, thousands of men fought for the colonial government and many received pensions or bounty land grants for their service. This database is a listing of men who applied for a pension but were rejected. It was originally published in 1852 and was an expanded version of a book published in 1838. Each record provides the applicant's name, state and town of residence, and the reason their petition was denied. It contains the names of over 8,600 individuals. For researchers of Revolutionary War ancestors, this can be a helpful database. Bibliography: "Rejected or Suspended Applications for Revolutionary War Pensions." Washington, D.C.: n.p., 1852. 3. forwarded to the list by Valorie -------- Original Message -------- Subject: New Calhoun Queries Post Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 01:10:41 -0800 . Calhoun Queries A new message, "Marriage Alice Calhoun to Henry Hall," was posted by Lonna Jean Conroy on Thu, 17 Feb 2000 It is a response to "Marriage Alice Calhoun to Henry Hall," posted by Jane Norton on Mon, 05 Apr 1999 Surname: HUDSON, CALHOUN, WRAY --- NAME: Lonna Jean Conroy EMAIL: ljconroy@pcif.net DATE: Feb 17 2000 URL: http:// QRYTEXT: Wanted to post this information for those, in addition to Jane Powell and myself, who are researching Alice CALHOUN and Henry HALL. This post gives additional information, from another perspective but should be researched and considered on an independent basis. According to my family records as well as the marriage records of Obion Co., TN and subsequent census records, my g-g-grandfather, Benjamin Waller HUDSON (b 30 Jan 1847 TN) married Alice M. CALHOUN (b 24 May 1850 Troy, Obion Co. TN) on 25 Feb. 1869 in Obion Co., TN. Benjamin, Alice and family appear in the 1870 and 1880 Obion Co. Census records. Alice died in childbirth 29 Nov. 1883 in Obion Co. After much research, the only Alice M. CALHOUN found to have been born in 1850 in Obion Co., TN is the daugher of Samuel S. CALHOUN and his second wife, Elizabeth Jane DICKEY (DICKEY is probably the name of Eliz. J.'s first husband; haven't located her maiden name as yet). To my knowledge, Alice M. is the only child born to Samuel S. CALHOUN and Elizabeth J. DICKEY. Alice M. appears in the 1850 and 1860 Obion Co. Census (Troy, Dist. 6) in the household of Samuel S. and S.S. CALHOUN. It is assumed Elizabeth J. DICKEY Calhoun died prior to 1860 since she does not appear in the 1860 census. The marriage record for Alice CALHOUN and Henry HALL came from LDS Records Film #1007236, Obion Co., TN Marriages 1838-1915 as Jane notes in the previous post. Author of this material is the Obion Co. Clerk. Marriage date is 30 July 1881. Perhaps locating descendants of Henry HALL and this ALICE CALHOUN will solve the mystery. To date, my research in that direction has not been fruitful. 1. [CALHOUN] Calhoun Slaves - SC
    2. Some of you have written in response to my query, thank you very much. Here is some more information. My gr gr grandmother Celia CALHOUN (b 1839 SC) left SC in covered wagon after emancipation with three children my master (name unknown, but guess is CALHOUN). Their children's names were Jeff (my gr grandfather) (b 1865 SC, Kate (or Catherine?), and Albert. She settled in MS and soon married Nicholas GREEN (b 1845 SC) in 1868 in Tallahatchie Co. They lived in Tallahtachie Co., MS then Coffeeville, Yalobusha Co., MS and seven more children Mittie,Mary, Kara,Charley, Clarence, Austin and Oscar. I do not have a clue which counties Nicholas and Celia were from. If everyone could just add any slave names they've run across in SC with their normal queries/trees/research that would be great. This can help many more people. Thanks in advance! Elcee

    3. >From today's Rootsweb Review. For sales info, contact me. - Valorie <valoriez@aa.net> BRIT BITS by Sherry Irvine, CGRS, FSA (Scot) <Ibgs@pacificcoast.net> <http://www.pacificcoast.net/~ibgs/> A new book from Scotland: FROM A HOLLOW ON THE HILL, by Nancy Black, published by the author, 1999. This recently published family history merits attention. It is subtitled "the history and tales of the Lorn and Fortingall families" -- Blacks, MacIntyres, McCowans, Livingstones, MacDougalls, Campbells, Colquhouns, McInnes, MacGregors, Sinclairs, McKechnies, McDiarmid, Camerons, Macdonalds, Cummings, Macfarlanes. The parishes of the story are: in Perthshire, Fortingall; in Argyllshire, Kilmore and Kilbride, Kilninver, Kilbrandon and Kilchatton, Kilmartin. The text flows easily, in and out of history and the childhood memories of the author, varied with references to some ups and downs of the genealogical research. There are extracts from historical documents: a school register, muster rolls, an 1837 directory, and estate records, to mention a few. This is a very pleasant way to absorb history, and acquire some useful knowledge about sources. There are pedigree charts, a glossary, and an interesting bibliography.
