For what it's worth, I can only add a ditto to part of this. I can't speak about the Calhoun side of this information, but any reference to a "Lady Judith Hamilton" has not, to my knowledge, been substantiated by original sources. I have inquired repeatedly on the Hamilton list regarding proof that this "Lady Judith" even existed and have, to date, found/received nothing except for repeated references to a suspect, secondary source, which, to my knowledge, does not offer citations of any kind. Everyone interested in this lineage would be wise to not accept as "fact" information that does not/cannot offer original source documentation as proof. Just my caveat and two-bits worth, Best regards to all, Valorie Zimmerman wrote: > This came to me personally, instead of the list. Perhaps you have heard about Ancestry's effort to string together a number of sources of basic information which could bridge the gap left by the destruction of the 1890 US Census. As the various bits are put online (mostly city directories, but also tax lists, voter registration lists, etc), they will be searchable for free for a few weeks. So it might be worthwhile to visit this url weekly. Would anyone from this list volunteer to do such a lookup and report back to the list with their findings? I'm just too swamped to take on another project! 1890 Federal Census Substitute (First Installment) <http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/1890sub/main.htm> Anyway, in a Soundex search of this week's information, I found these Calhouns: Search Terms: CALHOUN (2) Database: Bristol, Connecticut City Directories, 1882-1893 Combined Matches: 2 Name Business Name Occupation Location 1 Location 2 City State Year Seth H. It would be great if someone else stepped up and got and formatted the Cowens in those for the list. The Memphis one, I think, would have to be imported into a database manager, and offered as a file by email or ftp. Is anyone willing to do any of these? Let me quote the message in which I found this information: "The search engine is fast and easy to use compared to going to libraries and looking in the actual directory. However, using an actual directory is much more satisfying because it usually has more information, such as if they owned or rented their own home (useful for locating property records), and a possible reverse directory (useful for finding neighbors). They also are full of information on local businesses, churches, fraternal organizations, schools, etc. As these city directories keep appearing online, I will use them as indexes to the actual directories. (I know that sounds redundant.) I still would like to use the actual directories to the fullest extent possible. On the other hand, many libraries do not allow photocopying of hard copies. It might be an interesting timesaver to print out all the people with a given name for a given directory, and take that copy to the library where added information can be easily pencilled in. Virginia Sholin Smallwood" Please write me privately <mailto:valoriez@aa.net> if you are willing to get this sort of report weekly, as we only need one person doing it! Valorie, listmom

Hi, everybody -- as you may or may not know, I have been pretty sick the last 3 weeks, and have gotten behind in all my list projects. Now, today, the first day in weeks I could walk the picket line with my husband Bob again -- my laptop computer has crashed. Fortunately, I had backed up my mail files the day before. However, I have lost (maybe forever, maybe for the weekend) at least one day's mail. So if you wrote me and got no answer, write again. When I can kick my husband off his own computer, I will be able to use it! And maybe I can get back on track to finishing up our list webpages. I have written a few people about my plan to create a website for each of the lists I administer, and provide a place to post any pictures you would like to. I have "up" all the pictures I have received so far -- unfortunately, the site (such as it is) is bookmarked on my laptop, and not here! And my husband has already gone to bed, and I don't know how to use the FTP program. Within the next day or so, however, I will write everyone with the URLs, so you can see what we do (and will) have. If you have family pictures you have been wanting to post somewhere on the web, I will be able to do that for you. You can send the photos by private email if you have a scanner, or send copies to me and we will scan them, if you don't have access to a scanner. If this interests you, please contact me off the list <mailto:valoriez@aa.net>. Think about what you want the captions to say, and in what order you would like the photos displayed. If you have any favorite research websites you would like included in the links page of our website, please drop me a note. Here on the list is fine -- others would like to know, too. Also, any thoughts, ideas or offers to help are welcome! If you would like to see my husband's website, to see the quality we can look forward to, please drop by <http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~bobofwa/>. As always, my very best to each one of you precious list members, Valorie PS: Anyone happen to have a file called "Himem.sys" for the Toshiba 730cdt running Win95? That could be my life-saver.... -v
Since I am new on this list, this may be old news, but has anyone established(with a certainty, using original sources)the lineage of a Rev. Alexander CALHOUN, b.c. 1670, allegedly later of Crosh House, Ardstraw, Co. Tyrone, NI? Likely d. there c. 1716. Again, allegedly hs married a Judith HAMILTON(b.c. 1674). They had at least one daughter, Frances(b. 1703, Crosh House, Tyrone). The information I have is purely of a secondary nature and lacks citations, so the lineage really can't be proven without consulting original sources. Any input appreciated. I am interested in researching LT. JAMES C. CALHOUN and have been trying to find how he ties into my family of Calhouns. A distant relative sent me some papers and was telling me that he is family. If anyone is researching this family, I would be interested in sharing. I have the1850 Ohio census showing him as a child with his parents and siblings. I would appreciate any help. Myrna
Sorry about sending another Ancestry db along, just another day later! But they are only free for 10 days, so.... Canadian Immigrant Records, Part One Free Until 3/9/00 Description: Historically, Canada has been the destination for millions of immigrants from around the world seeking a better life in North America. Compiled from a variety of sources, this database is a collection of over 146,800 records between 1780 and 1906 relating to immigrants to Canada. This update adds the names of over 26,800 persons. Researchers will find the name of the immigrant and year and source of the original record. The entries in this database are not complete transcriptions of the original records; an e-mail link is provided at the bottom of each results page for those who would like to purchase a more detailed electronic transcript for a particular entry. This database can be immensely helpful for researchers with Canadian ancestors. We will periodically be adding more Canadian immigration data to our online library, so return to Ancestry.com often. Extended Description: Researchers throughout North America will appreciate the value of this database that has been compiled from a variety of sources to represent the movement of immigrants to Canada. Historically, there have been frequent periods of migration between the United States and Canada, creating an interesting research problem for the genealogist. Neither Canadian nor American researchers can afford to be ignorant of records in the other nation. Passage to Canada was often less expensive than travelling to ports in the United States, so immigrants might travel to Canada and then complete their journey to the United States on land. Economic and social pressures have also played important roles in migration patterns. The entries in this database are extracted from original records. They have been compiled to represent only those individuals for whom immigration information was available in the original records. The entries in this database are not complete transcriptions of the original records; an email link is provided at the bottom of each results page for those who would like to purchase a more detailed electronic transcript for a particular entry. The information in this database comes from a variety of original documents. A large majority of the entries have been extracted from the 1901 census records for parts of Ontario and Quebec and represent those individuals who indicated a year of immigration and a place of birth outside of Canada. Other records represented include: historical atlases of Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island; biographical extracts from Quebec's Eastern Townships; War Office records listing Loyalist regiments in Lower Canada (Quebec); the 1851 census of Quebec City (for those who indicated a place of birth outside of Canada); early Irish immigrants in Eastern Ontario; groups of Scottish immigrants to Upper Canada (Ontario); and, Crown land grants in Kent County, Ontario. The original records from which this database has been prepared are housed in a number of archives and libraries across Canada. The source information for each record will guide you to the relevant collection. Should you wish to visit the repositories, further information about each archive may be found at the following web-sites: National Archives of Canada: www.archives.ca/index.html National Library of Canada: www.nlc-bnc.ca/ehome.htm Prince Edward Island Public Archives and Records Office: www.gov.pe.ca/educ/archives/archives index.asp Public Archives of Nova Scotia: www.nsarn.ednet.ns.ca/ Provincial Archives of New Brunswick: www.gov.nb.ca/supply/archives/Index1.htm Archives nationales du Québec (French-language site): www.anq.gouv.qc.ca/ Source Information: Anonymous. For the next 10 days, until 3/10/2000, Jordan R. Dodd's "Early American Marriages: Tennessee, 1851 to 1900." Orem, UT: Ancestry, Inc., 1999-2000 can be searched free at <http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4125.htm> The site says: Becoming the sixteenth state in 1796, Tennessee was home to over one million residents before the American Civil War. This database is a collection of marriage records from the state between 1851 and 1900. This update adds marriages from Warren County between 1852 and 1900. Researchers will find the names of both bride and groom along with the marriage date. The county where the ceremony was performed is also provided. Containing over 64,000 records and the names of about 132,000 men and women, this collection can be a tremendous aid to those seeking ancestors from the area. Extended Description: Warren County marriage records were taken from county court records located at Wartburg, Tennessee. Microfilm copies of these records can be found at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah (FHL # 0978841). On a search for Cahoon, I 0 results, and the same with Cohoon. Calhoon yielded 6 results, Calhoun 25, Colquhoun 0. There were 8 Cowin, 23 Cowen, and 99 Cowan marriages. Happy hunting! Valorie
Zabette, You are on the right track, Lt. James Calhoun was married to Custer's sister. I have checked some very good sites on the internet, some very interesting reading on history. Thank you for responding to my e-mail, it is nice to be able to work with others having an interest in Calhoun. Verna, I stand corrected. I just read some information on line and Col. George A. Custer was m. to a Elizabeth Bacon. I may be wrong, but I remember reading that Lt. James Calhoun was Custers brother in law and he was killed at the Battle along with Custer. Several ways to look at this, perhaps Calhoun was m. to the sister of Custer. There are web sites on Custer and perhaps by going in that direction you can find something out on James Calhoun. Verna, Have been following these questions on Lt. James Calhoun with great interest. He was related by marriage to Lt. Col. George A. Custer, an American army officer, who won fame as an Indian fighter in the West. and was killed by Indians in the "Battle of the Little Big Horn". If I remember right, James Calhoun's sister was m. to Lt. Col. Custer. There is some connection family wise. I have seen books written about Custer that were more of a personal nature at the Barnes & Noble Books Stores. Checking out your public library might be of help.
