    3. I've often found Everton's little daily to have some good information in it. Has anyone used this particular index to look up any of OUR folks? I'll be looking for this index film next time I visit the Nat. Archives, if they hold them in Seattle (Sand Point). Valorie EVERTON'S FAMILY HISTORY NEWSLINE Monday, 29 May 2000 This Day in History: 29 May 1865 In the aftermath of the American Civil War, President Andrew Johnson moved quickly to heal some of the wounds by proclaiming a general amnesty to those who supported the Southern cause in a decree dated 29 May 1865. Johnson's proclamation wasn't the end of the matter. Rather, it was just the beginning. High-ranking officials of the Confederacy and its military forces were excluded from the general amnesty, and even the people who were included were required to petition for presidential pardon. The records of these amnesty petitions can be valuable for family historians because of the biographical and genealogical data they include. Fortunately, many of the earliest applications have been preserved by the U.S. National Archives, and are available on microfilm. Happily, the National Archives staff has included an index to the names appearing on this microfilm record. 3. TONY: Unfortunately, I have not been able to establish just who the father of James P. Calhoun is -- but I don't think he's the son of Andrew. Here's what I know about the Calhouns I'm trying to trace. JOHN Calhoun -- there was a John Calhoun who was postmaster of Springfield, Washington Co., KY, in 1816. I'm guessing he's the same John C. Calhoun who witnessed in Virginia some McElroy documents before the McElroy clan moved to Kentucky around 1789. There are some scattered references, I'm told, about a John Calhoun in early Springfield who was perhaps a banker and who had a large library. I have no information about who his wife or children were. JAMES P. Calhoun -- He was a saddler in Springfield, born in 12/5/1800, died 9/6/1875 in Springfield. He appears on census rolls in Washington Co, KY, and Susan Davison Calhoun, my gg-grandmother, was one of his children. I'm guessing that the above JOHN Calhoun was the father of the above JAMES P. Calhoun, but as yet have no documentation of that. I'm also guessing that the above JOHN was married to a Margaret & is the one pictured, along with Margaret, in the pair of photographs in my family's possesion -- but no proof of that yet. I was intrigued by the earlier post at CALHOUN-L mentioning a John, who was the son of an ANDREW Calhoun and who was married to a Margaret -- could that John be the JOHN who moved to Kentucky along with the McElroys? I will be in Springfield, KY, for a couple weeks in June to try to answer some of these questions. My family history is on "firm" ground starting with John Calhoun 1764- 1821. He married Martha Walker and had the following children: Warren Walker Calhoun 1793-1859 James Calhoun 1795-1875 Milton Calhoun 1797-1840 Amanda Caroline Calhoun 1800-1880 Anny L. Calhoun 1804- Alexander Calhoun 1805- Elizabeth Calhoun 1807- John Newton Calhoun 1809-1879 (My great grandfather) Sidney Calhoun 1812-1837 Prior to John Calhoun my information is dependent solely on the internet and a few family notes. In a letter written by family historian, Will Newton Calhoun in 1937 to Jesse W. Calhoun he said, "The Calhouns emigrated from Ireland to America, first to New Jersey, then to Pennsylvania. The clan stuck together in Scotland, Ireland and America. They founded a colony near Wthville (sic), Virginia, some time prior to 1755. In that year Braddock was defeated by the French and the Indians became so troublesome that the colony broke up and the Calhouns scattered to all colonies, among them our ancetor, Edom (?) or (Elam)? Calhoun to North Carolina. I am not sure of the name and have only tradition to guide me. He my great great grandfather was appointed to collect supplies for Boston and was killed ay a falling tree during Green's campaign in the revolution. His son was John Calhoon (born October 10, 1764) who maried Martha Walker (born June 25, 1776) and they had the following sons and two daughters." In this letter he says that John's father was named Edom or Elam. Information on the internet in other family histories says the name is Samuel, son of Andrew. But your information is different. Apparently you have done a lot of research. Do you have a suggestion of a reference book that would be useful? Dear Valorie..., May I address you by your first name as I am the elder by a few years? I am looking for the connection between the Hamiltons and the Colquhouns. My great grandfather's middle name was Calhoun and I have been wondering where the name came from. His gg grandmother was Mary Hamilton sister of Andrew, William, and she married John Byrd who had settled in VA on Jackson Creek. He was killed by the Indians as they were trying to get to Fort Dinwinddie. Mary and all the children but Sarah were captured. Do you have any information about them? I tried once to send a note to Chester but it came back. I must have his address wrong. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks. Alice E. Beebe-Blowers - ABlowrs@aol.com

    3. This is not on the subject of family, but will make it easier to stay in touch with your family and friends!! I just found this site for making FREE PC to Phone calls in the US and Canada. I already tried it and it seems to work better than the others I have used. Still a little lag (your going to get that with a computer), but it was clear as a bell... no static at all and I had no trouble dialing. Check it out! Martha http://www.deltathree.com/

    3. O.K. here I go again, this makes the third time.I am trying to find the parents of my greatgandfather Dennis(Denny as he was called) Garfield Calhoun. All I know is what I have been told by family members and I have found out that what they tell you is not always so. I was told by his daughter, Lola Calhoun Willis, that he was born in Trigg Co. Kentucky on October 27th,1887, he died in Memphis, Tennesse in April 1967.He was married three times , his first wife was Sena Evelyn Butler, my greatgrandmother. They had four daughters, Pauline, Edna(my grandmother).Lola, and Cassie. I have found alot of info on the Butler's. They were from Alabama.Sena's mother was Celia Ann Nelson, her father was Greenberry Nelson from Cleburne Co. Arkansas.I have heard that Celia and her husband Wm. Pickens Butler moved to Ark., all of their children were born there. I suspect that my ggrandfathers people ( the Calhouns) moved to Ark. also. I do not know the name of my ggrandfather's second wife ( I heard she was kind of on the wild side and they divorced), they had four children, three boys and one girl. The third time he married was to a lady named Nila, she was quite a bit younger than my ggrandfather. They had a boy and a girl, Clay and Camilla. Denny had a brother Mac who married one of Sena's sisters named Lily. He also had a sister named Monico. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. It is very frustrating to not be able to find any info on your family.Thank you.

And this information could be placed on the Bible Records board <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/c/a/CALHOUN/bible_records> .... Once the information is posted to the boards, it is not only available to all your fellow researchers, both on and off this list, but also more easily analyzed by interested descendants. I urge you to think about posting any hard data you have to the GenConnect boards. This raises the level of research above 'trading Gedcoms' -- not that there's anything wrong with that! You can easily reach any of our GenConnect board by hopping from our Calhoun Resource page, <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/c/a/CALHOUN/> Your outgoing, Valorie
