    1. [CALHOUN] Lost Calhoun in Alaska
    2. Roberta D. Calhoun
    3. Posted on: Calhoun Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/cal/Calhoun/116 Surname: Calhoun, Simmons, Simmonds, Bacon ------------------------- Henry CALHOUN, first child of Sheldon CALHOUN & Sally Ann BACON, was born January 29, 1812, presumably in Frankfort, Herkimer County NY. He married and had two children: 1. Julie CALHOUN married SIMMON(D)S and had a son. It is not known where they resided, perhaps in NY or MI. 2. A son, possibly named John, married and lived in Juneau, Alaska and had one boy and three girls. Our old "Calhouns of Connecticut" published genealogy lists no first name, but a 1935 letter records him as "John." According to The Centennial Gazetteer: A Guide to Juneau, Alaska Place Names, page 8, one of the older streets in Juneau is Calhoun Avenue. It was named for Mrs. Mary V. Calhoun, an early resident of the area. She and her husband, John J. Calhoun, arrived in Juneau from Wisconsin in 1888 and established a dairy along what is now Calhoun Avenue. They occupied the present site of the Governor's Mansion and grazed their cows along Gold Creek, the south bank of which was sometimes called Calhoun Flats. In 1902 they sold the dairy and moved to Seattle where John Calhoun died on January 16, 1906. Mrs. Calhoun died at Nanaimo, British Columbia, April 27, 1912. There are no children mentioned in the Gazetteer. The 1880 Wisconsin census does list NY natives John and Mary Calhoun, ages 37 and 32, farming in Fond du Lac, WI. Children at that time were Elen, 11, Leonora, 5, and Frank, 2. QUESTIONS: Can anybody claim ANY of these folks so I can rule them out as ours? Or, does anyone have an update on descendants? Anyone out there from Alaska? This is one of our toughest unsolved family mysteries. Many thanks. Link: Calhoun SCT>IRL>CT>NY>West URL: <http://home.earthlink.net/~nantasket>

    3. Posted on: CALHOUN Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/c/a/CALHOUN/obituaries/11 Surname: Baxter, Boore, Calhoun, Forrest ------------------------- Chicago Tribune, June 24, 1896 DEATH OF JOSEPH K. C. FORREST One of the Oldest Men in Chicago Journalism Passes Away After a Brief Illness Joseph [King Cummings] Forrest, one of the oldest newspaper writers in Chicago, died at his residence, No. 1043 Wilcox avenue, at half-past 9 o'clock yesterday morning, of BrightÂ’s disease, after a comparatively short illness. He was confined to his bed only two weeks. Mr. Forrest has been an active figure in Chicago journalism since 1840. In the early stages of his newspaper career he was associate editor of the Journal under Richard L. Wilson, and afterwards assumed editorial control of the Gem of the Prairie. At one time he was also assistant editor of the Democrat. He was one of the founders of THE TRIBUNE, but did not long remain identified with the paper. Mr. Forrest was born in Cork, Ireland, On Nov. 26, 1820, his father being a man of great prominence in social and commercial circles. Notwithstanding the prestige his family connections would have given him in Ireland, Mr. Forrest decided to emigrate to America, and came to this country in 1840. He arrived in Chicago in July of that year, and had lived ever since in this city. While occupying an editorial position on the Democrat Mr. Forrest was elected Clerk of the Recorder's Court, defeating Philip A. Hoyne. He was also elected City Clerk on the people's party ticket in 1873. With these exceptions he held no public offices. He had, however, always been actively interested in educational matters, and was one of the earliest teachers in the public school system. Mr. Forrest married Miss Sadie Calhoun, daughter of Alvin Calhoun. Two daughters, Hattie and Lydia, were the result of this union. The former married William G. Baxter, and died in 1884. The second daughter is Mrs. Harry Boore, who lives at Vincennes avenue and Forty-eighth street. Mrs. Forrest, who is a niece of John Calhoun, survives her aged husband. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a. m. from the residence. The interment will be private.

    3. Very Cool! The Threaded Archive has a new front page, and one no longer needs to enter a password to enter. This should really boost use of this archive. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ There is no longer any mention of searching all lists, so I'm assuming that we have to forego that ability, at least for a while. Nor is there any search box, so everything works. The Isearch archive was always better for searching, anyway! http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl The updated Rootsweb "Searches" page is pretty neato, also. http://searches.rootsweb.com/ This is more than redecorating -- this is major reorganization. And it is good for ALL our users. Kudos to all the Rootsweb staff that have been doing this wonderful work! Thanks! Valorie

She was raised around Tyler,Smith Co. Mary was the 2nd wife of Felix Williams. He was born Jan 1,1832 Bartholomew Co. Indiana to Samuel L. Williams and Nancy Miller of Indiana. Felix married his 1st. wife: Serena Smith 1853 Decatur Co. Indiana. They had 2 sons that I know of. Orlando Williams born 1854 Decatur Co. Indiana, he married Jennie Braden 1893 Decatur Co. Indiana. And John Datious Williams born 1861 Decatur Co.Indiana and married Mary Ann Mollie Clay 1889 Kaufman Co. Texas. They had the following children: Walter Randolph, Hamer Milton,Willie Owen,John Delmer and Natalie Mozelle all born in Texas. Felix Williams moved to Texas abt. the late 1860's or 1870's Mary Calhoun and Felix Williams had Belle Elizabeth Williams (my grandmother) Feb 4,1892-93 in Kaufman Co. Texas. It states on Belle's birth certificate, that Felix and Mary had 5 living children. It also states that Mary was 36 years old and Felix was 61 years old and was a farmer. There have been family stories through the years that there were twins in the family. Also that maybe at one time Mary was a school teacher. My granmother Belle Elizabeth Williams had red hair when she was younger. Belle met my grandfather Ocel E.Bratton, while she was visiting her half brother Orlando Williams and his wife Jennie in Indiana. Ocel and Orlando were friends and may have worked on the railroad together. (Ocel worked for the RR) Belle and Ocel married Dec 3,1913 in Marion Co.Indiana. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. James,Russell (my father), Merele Elizabeth Is the anyone out there who has any information on Mary Calhoun and Felix Williams and their 5 children? I think they were all born in Texas. Thank You, Debra Weatherbee

    3. Hi, I'm a descendant of John Calhoun, but he was born in 1860 in Letcher County, KY. He was the son of Thomas Calhoun and Virginia Musicks, and the grandson of David Calhoun and Eda Ayers who were from Virginia, but who married in Wayne County, KY and then moved to Perry County, KY. There's a lot of descendants in Eastern KY from this line, but I don't know the parents of David Calhoun born about 1790 in VA and married in 1813 in KY. I've heard that he had a brother named Thomas. Where did your Calhouns come from? I want to add a new page to my site to try and link all researchers that research these same surnames from site to site. Like a web ring, but more specific to just surnames of interest and faster then random searching. So, if you have a web page and would like a link from my site to yours just send the address and let me know. Also send your name so that I can put it beside the URL. Plus a list of your main surnames of interest. I will also list this next to your URL. All I ask, is that you also provide a link back to my site. I believe that there is the possibility of finding more "new cousins" out there and opening up new avenues of searching. Awaiting all the good responses, RIKKI LOVE, GGG-grandson of William Hiram LOVE If this goes over well and I get a large response, (Which I am truly praying for), it will probably take me a couple of weeks to get them in order and posted. THANKS!!!!!
