Hello, Its been a long time since I made a query about Nancy Towns.. By family tradition she was a first cousin of the famous John C. Calhoun. My research leads me to believe she may be a more distant cousin than that. I am searching for any information on her parentage and siblings. She may be related to the Henry Towns who married Lucretia Ann Calhoun. Since Henry and Lucretia had no children, the connection might be through a brother to Henry. Nancy M. Towns(es) was born 16 April 1833 in South Carolina, d. 30 Dec. 1913, Smith County, Texas, buried in the Union Chapel Cemetery. She married America M. Fowler [b. GA (per census) d. 6 Oct. 1873, Smith County, Texas] ca 1852 probably in Alabama as that is where their children were born. Their children were Mary, Paralee Lou, Embry, Sarah Lenora, Milton Elonzo, Columbus, Viola, Kathryn Marilya, and Sam R. Several died in infancy or at an early age. In correspondence written by my husband's mother, Cammie Lenora Broyles Caffey, to a first cousin, she says: "when my grandparents, Nancy Towns and A. M. Fowler, came to Texas, Nancy's brother, known as Uncle Rady, and a nephew, John, came with them. Uncle Rady had a store at Garden Valley" (Smith County, Texas). Rady never married so John the nephew is the son of either a brother or sister of Nancy's. The assumption has been that Rady and John were both named Towns(es) but that is not stated in the correspondence. A. L. (Abner) Townes ran a hotel in Grand Saline and is related to the family, probably a son of John. A. L. was the father of Ida and Lena Towns. These sisters married Alexander brothers in the Smith or Wood County, Texas, area. This is about all I know of the family. Thanks for any help anyone can give. Jynelle
Could someone inform me as to how to find a James G. Calhoun who was in the Rock Island Prison during the Civil War. It was 1863. Co. E 27 Arkansas Infantry. Thank you, Myrna
Tom, your Calhouns are mine too. In fact, Patrick's son William is my DAR ancestor and I have documented information back to him. I have a copy of a letter written by his daughter Rachel and in it she mentions all the Calhouns , including her grandfather Patrick. She married Handy Harris and through them came my family line. I was able to obtain several books that list the Calhouns, one is "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772" (Rev. William Martin and His Five Shiploads of Settlers) by Jean Stephenson. I ran across it in an antique book store. Once at the welcome station near Augusta, Ga. I found lots of pamphlets mentioning the Calhouns and the Long Cane Massacre. I understand there is still a monument standing at Troy, SC. According to some DAR records, William Calhoun, son of Patrick, was made Justice of the Peace for Granville County, and subsequently (after 1769) for Ninety-Six District. (South Carolina Gazette, Oct. 8, 1764). Records while serving as JP ( Publications of Southern History Association, Vol. VIII, pp. 179-195. When you make your trip to SC. take lots of pictures of places, especially the monument. Every October they have what's called the Troy Reenactment(803-543-3015)Patriots and Tories do battle amid the sounds of Cannons and muskets as they reenact the 1780 Battle of Long Cane. Includes a Candlelight Tour. Last Weekend before Halloween. ( I just copied this from a pamphlet on McCormick County, SC.) If you see anything regarding William Calhoun and Agnes Long Calhoun I would love to see what you find. I intend to make a trip there myself someday, now that I have retired. I know your mail wasn't especially to me, but when I saw the familiar names I just had to jump in. Sorry (not really) Pat Pelfrey, in Flintstone, Georgia, near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Tom, I picked up on Patrick and Mary Catherine's Calhoun family as immigrants and have documented them and their descendants in their subsequent settlements in SC. What I am missing is their ancestors in Ireland. I've spent many hours searching. Is their any possibility of acquiring what you have of their Ireland ancestry? Hopefully, I can pay you.
