I'm looking for information on Alex Calhoun (S.C.) who maried Parthenia Chatman (GA) and had a son James Clarence born December 24, 1856.
My grandfather was Oscar Calhoun b. 1886, son of James C. Calhoun. Could this be him?
I am searching for information on A.B. Calhoun. He served in the Civil War with Forrest's Cavalry. I believe that he may have joined up in TN, FL, or AL. The only lead I have is very small. I have a photo of him in uniform. The photo has his name written out, and the photo was taken in St. Petersburg, FL. Any help will be greatly appreciated. You may have seen this announcement, if you read your Rootsweb Review. I'm really excited about the improvements coming up. They are so close I can almost TASTE it! In fact, the boards were up briefly tonight, and I've bookmarked them all. It's gonna be great! > IMPORTANT MESSAGE BOARDS IMPROVEMENTS > You have probably heard about the new message board changes coming about in the next days and weeks. Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com will be releasing a new integrated message board system that is a combination of two powerful message board systems, GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com. Users will be able to take advantage of a much larger community in which to share experience, tips, and genealogical information. > > Users will be able to access these new message boards on either RootsWeb.com or Ancestry.com, and message board access will remain free on both sites. (Any FamilyHistory.com bookmarks will be redirected to the message boards at Ancestry.com) I'm really looking forward to the next generation of our boards. Roll-out will be in the next few days, and for now, no one is able to post to the GenConnect boards. They are still *searchable,* however. > Overall, we expect the new system to be more stable and have more features. Improvements include the following: > > --- The new message boards database will be by far the largest collection of such messages on the Internet. In fact, the FamilyHistory and RootsWeb messages are extremely complimentary. The majority of the messages on FamilyHistory are surname-based, while RootsWeb's strength is in the locality and topic areas. Not only will the new combination enjoy a larger set of data, but users will have access to a much larger audience. This is going to help us all. More messages, more visitors, more connections made. > --- The new message boards can now handle attachments to e-mail messages in the form of uploaded pictures (scanned documents, family photos, etc.) and GEDCOM files. This will be GREAT! Gravestone images with obituaries, the scanned Bible records with the transcriptions, GEDCOMS with the Biographies. This will be SUPER!!! > --- Users will be able to view the e-mail address of message authors and be able to respond to them easily and privately. However, the message boards cannot be "crawled" by unscrupulous third parties to gather e-mail addresses for spam mailings. The boards already are protected, and I'm glad that will be continuing. > --- Search functionality will be improved compared to either the RootsWeb or FamilyHistory systems. Search hits will be ranked by relevance and wildcard searches are available. Better searching is *always* an improvement. > --- The hardware infrastructure supporting the new message boards is faster, can handle larger traffic loads, and is more stable. The new system is also less expensive over time and easier to maintain. The servers that GC were on were notoriously unreliable. New servers are good news. > The boards, however, will definitely be different. We hope that we have preserved the important features and conveniences from FamilyHistory.com as well as added a few new bells and whistles. It is important to us that these new boards continue to serve your needs. We will all have an adjustment period to go through. Please write me privately with feedback, both positive and negative. Let's keep the discussion about functionality and suggestions for improvements direct to the various board admins, and keep list discussion to genealogy and family history. Do you have a relative who served in the Georgia House of Representatives during 1896-1897? I DO! And I was very excited recently when I was given the opportunity to scan the original 104-year-old portrait of these men. I now have it framed and hanging elegantly in my living room! If you are interested in owning one of these 16X20 portraits of all the men who served that term, now is your chance! A list of the men, with their respective counties, follows. I am in Alabama and am searching for a John W. Calhoun whose daughter Alice was born in Randolph County in 1894. I did find a deed on BLM in Geneva County, land office in Montgomery. I was wondering if anyone on this list had a John W. Calhoun with land there? Is Genevea the name of the county Montgomery is in? Rose Adams

I have a biography of my 4th gr grandfather's son in which the following is listed: "Dr. Carter was born at Smith's Crossroads (now Dayton) Tenn., March 1, 1832, and is a son of William and Ruth (McFarland) Carter. His grandfather, James Carter, was of English ancestry and a native of Virginia. Mrs. Ruth Carter was of Scotch origin, her birth occurred in Scotland in 1808, and with her parents she came to America in girlhood. She was a relative of the CALHOUN family, which is noted in the history of this country." Does anyone have a CALHOUN history that lists McFarland's in their family? Any assistance appreciated. Thanks, Kim
I'm truly sorry that none of the Calhouns in your message match any of the Calhouns in my pedigree! I liked the thing about the Calhoun hounds. That was a first for me although there were some real dogs in my ancestry. Any Information would be great. Finding more family members would also be wonderful. Interested in finding more out about the women in the family and any family stories there may be. Thank you very much. My family line seems to be known for breeding Calhoun Hounds.
I was chatting in IRC with some of the Rootsweb staff, and found out about an unlinked search engine, which searches all of the USGenWeb archives for the entire US. Naturally, this is only valuable for rare surnames or well put-together queries, but CAHOON/CALHOON/CALHOUN/COLQUHOUN is pretty easy! http://searches.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/fullusaindex.html Calhoun yields 6508 hits, Calhoon 557, Cahoon 458, Colquhoun 48, so the state-separated engine would probably be better: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Have fun! The john Calhoun that you are referring too is not the John C. Calhoun in my genealogy there were 4 brothers in NC at the same time my ancestor was in NC the brothers some of them migrated to Ga. In the library part of Family Tree Maker .com there is a book that was written in the 1950's on the Colquhoun/Calhoun family in NC it included a small chapter on my family but the too families were not kin that I have been able too prove.
