Ky Good to hear from you. The indian ancestry comes from the Heatherly side of the family. George Heatherly who was William Heatherlys father married Hester (Mary )Raincrow. Mary was a full blooded Eastern Cherokee Indian. William Heatherly was married to Mary Calhoun the daughter of James H.C. Calhoun, the son of William Calhoun. William and Mary's daughter Caroline Heatherly married William Hatfield who were our grandmother Malissa Hatfield Trails parents. William Hatfields father was Smith Hatfield . I have the information on the Hatfield side of our family back to the 1600's. Do you need this. Hope that you have had a good summer and a better school year. Love your cousin Patty Trail Purvis GOD BLESS

Calhoun and John N. Calhoun were the heirs of Nancy Calhoun, whose will was proved May 3, 1841 in Washington County, Ga. John N. Calhoun was appointed administer of the estate of James Calhoun on January 13, 1840 in Washington County, Ga. You mentioned that James and Nancy had a daughter, Amanda. There are three Amanda Calhoun's in my Calhoun line but none of them are your Amanda. I am not sure who the two James Calhoun's and Nancy Calhoun mentioned above are related. My gggrandfather was John N.(Newton)Calhoun(Calhoon) b.2/01/1809. He had a brother named James and a sister named Amanda. Other siblings were Warren, Milton, Alexander, Anny, Elizabeth & Sir Sidney. His father was John Calhoun b. 10/20/1764 and I believe had two brothers James and Samuel. John was from N. Carolia and his children where born in Tennessee. Let me know what you think.

Based on 1870/1880 census records I have the same children as you do; except for Isabelle - who must have married before the 1870 census. (I don't have access to the 1860 census). In the 1880 census Catharine Calhoun (age 82 or 92 - hard to read) is living with James Porter and family. Based on this data, I have his father identified as James Callhoun, b. c1790/1791 in Pa. married to Catharine, b. 1801 in New Jersey (according to 1870 census records for Ashe Co.) The "Hurley Families in America" has that their daughter, Amanda Jane Calhoun (22 Feb 1859-19 Jun 1940) married Lee Andrew Hurley (16 Sep 1855-11 Mar 1935) on 15 May 1875. Lee (according to his tombstone and immediate family (or Leander-according to the book) is the son of Andrew and Nancy Blackburn Hurley. Lee and Mandy had eleven children; the youngest was Ina Ann Okie Hurley (22 Oct 1904-31 Jul 1983). Okie is my husband's grandmother. The birth dates of Lee and Mandy are the same as those listed in Okie's bible. Also according to this book, James Porter and Harriet Wright Calhoun are buried on Big Springs Mountain, near Apple Grove in Ashe County. The book doesn't give dates of death for James or Harriet. I haven't found the marriage in the index I use for North Carolina. Beth

I do not know what the Civil and Canon terms mean. I have a lot of info from a cousin of mine who has done far more research than myself. He wrote to me in May of 2000: he has settled in on the fact that this James Calhoun is from Ashe County and Not Guilford, he has more circumstantial evidence than the Book published by Orvil Calhound (who used census records only). He states that there is a group of Calhouns from Tyrell County - extreme Eastern North Carolina, a group from Edgecombe County, a group from Guilford County and a group from Ashe County. Even tho they may all be related, the connection would probably go back to William Cahon and Deliverance Peck. He believes that the two William Cohoon's who where in Sury County, NC in 1790 are in his and my line. But he is hoping for more proof. There is a missing generation in the Orvil's book. There is a loss of some records during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781, and another problem is the changing of the name Cahoon to Cohoon, Calhoon and Calhoun during the late 1700's and early 1800's. The fact the Ashe and Guilford are far apart has also s! hed doubt into the theory that we are from the Guilford line. The James & Harriet in my list had the following children: ISABELL, Martha, Amanda, Mary Ann, Sarah, Matilda (Tilde), William Riley Calhoun and Lucinda. I have some pictures of a couple of these folks. Sarah Calhoun married a LARKIN ROTEN. Anyway, if you have more info for me, please share. Thanks, Sharene sharene@sharenes-place.com
