    1. [CALHOUN] PML and our list
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. I've been meaning to bring you all up to date about PML. I have recently subscribed to Rootsweb's newest service, in order to more thoroughly scour the Internet for our surname, and some of you may be wondering what it is all about. (Those of you who don't read your Rootsweb Review, that is....) So here's the latest from RWR: o BETA TEST OF ROOTSWEB's PERSONALIZED MAILING LIST (PML) CONTINUES. RootsWeb's PML allows a RootsWeb contributor to enter multiple complex search terms and receive by e-mail notification each day of ANY new post that matches those search terms on ANY of RootsWeb's nearly 15,000 archived mailing lists, 140,000 message boards, and 770,000 RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) entries. BE CAREFUL WITH THE SEARCH TERMS YOU ENTER, AS YOU MIGHT BE OVERWHELMED WITH E-MAIL AS THE RESULT OF AN OVERLY BROAD SEARCH. Also, please be patient with us during the beta test period. RootsWeb contributors at the $24/year level and above are invited to beta test RootsWeb's PML at <http://pml.rootsweb.com/> Never again miss an important post on a mailing list to which you have not subscribed, on a message board that you have neglected to check, or on the RSL. To become a RootsWeb contributor or to upgrade your membership to the $24/year level, please visit <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html>. -- This is a wonderful service, and very simple to put in place. If you have questions about any of this, including advice on "search terms," please contact me privately, off-list: <mailto:valoriez@aa.net>. As part of my holiday celebration, I have not only re-upped my membership to Rootsweb, but I have moved my contribution up a notch. I am so thankful to Rootsweb for allowing me to expand my ring of "family" so large -- I just love 'knowing' and helping each of you. All my best to each of you, Valorie

    3. I'm a new member although I've been on other Rootsweb lists for nearly two years. I don't have much to go by on my Calhoun. She was Katherine Calhoun who was born in Scotland and married Daniel Carmichael (b. abt. 1750) in Scotland. They and their children came from the Isle of Lismore, Scotland (abt. 1792) to North, then South, Carolina. Katherine Calhoun Carmichael died in South Carolina between 1820-30. That's the extent of my knowledge. Any ideas on her Calhoun relations back in Scotland? Perhaps they, also, came to the Carolinas. Have been subscribed to about 25 Surname Lists for several months now, and can't believe the condescending, rude rebukes quickly sent by many Listmembers and Listowners alike. While a certain amount of structure and control makes these Lists more beneficial for all of us, I wish more of them taught with kindness and patience and realized that few are here for the purpose of being annoying or disruptive to the List. Hope we get some "newbies" that know something about the ancestors of Elizabeth CALHOUN b. abt 1800 ?SC m. Fleming SHIVER

    1. [CALHOUN] Attention - Long-time members, Welcome, new members!
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Listmembers, old and new, The holidays are here, and we are seeing (or will soon see) new members to our list. I'm going to quote Cyndi Howells, of Cyndislist fame, on the subject: Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. {check out those URLs! Cut and paste the address *from the site.*} 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know <http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm> Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet <http://www.CyndisList.com> Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb <http://www.RootsWeb.com> See the RootsWeb Help Desk: <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com> Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists <http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html> USGenWeb <http://www.USGenWeb.org> Depending on the number of new subscribers to our list, I will be posting this message every few weeks, until the rapid growth slows down. Have a great Holiday season, everyone! Valorie Zimmerman, Listowner Black Diamond, Washington USA Proud sponsor of Rootsweb

    3. My grandfather John B. Calhoun, (b. 4-23-1847 in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN) was first m. to a Mattie Doss, (she was probably b. in about 1848 in NY) by this marriage they had two daughters, Edna Calhoun, b. about 1882 and Estra Calhoun b. about 1884. After their mother died about 1900, the daughters went to live with their father's sister Allie Calhoun, who had m. H. L. Estill in the Los Angeles, CA area. The Calhoun family lost track of John B. Calhoun, until the 1930's. The daughters m. brothers, Edna married John Tucker and Estra m. Robert Tucker. I believe they all lived in Los Angles, CA. Would like to learn more about the first family. I am a descendant of the second (marriage to Margaret Seal) family. Zabette (Calhoun) Elam

    3. Since there seems to be the spirit of a roll call going around I will post a research request. One of my collateral line Calhoun lines begins with Duncan Calhoun. His wife was Sarah McNeill. They had a large family with 12 children, the first who was Archibald, named for his grandfather Archibald Colquhoun. I have some info. on the descendants of Archibald, son of Duncan but no info. on any of the descendants of the other 11 children of Duncan and Sarah. I would love to share info with anyone who descends from any one of the following children of Duncan. Archibald, Mary, Margaret, Isabell, Malcolm, Rachel, Calvin, John, Ann, James, William, and Richard. Depending on their placement in the family these children were either born in Cumberland, NC or Talbot, GA. Hope to hear from anyone who ties in. Scott Jolley Jolley@ncweb.com

HELP! > Mary Mary, It seems your suggestion has struck a cord, and I see the beginnings of a Roll Call beginning. PLEASE use a good Subject Line! DON'T use "Roll Call", or "Calhoun". Some people LIKE a low-volume list, and Roll Calls drive 'em nuts. What drives ME nuts is a simple list of surnames, with no dates or places. At the very LEAST put the detail you would into your Roots Surname Listing. And by the way, if you *aren't* listed there, you are missing the boat! We now have 40 members on the list, so that's how many eyes will see your post. Our GenConnect boards are probably searched that many times per *second* -- and the RSL ten times that! (My figures are sheer guesses) <http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi> Thanks so much to Mary, Michael, and all you other caring, knowledgeable listers. As you all know, my ancestors are Cowans, not Calhouns. If an active Calhoun researcher comes along who wants to assume responsibility for the list, boards, or for the whole cluster of names (I also have the Cahoon and Calhoon clusters, and the Colquhoun boards, along with the Cowin cluster), I have no ego about handing over the job. Until then, this list makes me very happy! All the best, Listmama Valorie Cowan Zimmerman Black Diamond, Washington USA Proud sponsor of Rootsweb

    3. I only have the 1900 and 1920 census for this group and a very nice lady in Ohio got that for me. I don't get to the library very often and the couple of times I have been there I have not been able to find. My grandfather, Allen, made a tape before he died that we didn't find until after his death and of course I was not interested in genealogy while he was alive. I have only been at this a year and the other lines came so easily I have kind of neglected this one. From grandfather's tape they didn't stay long enough in any area until he got married. My census records are from Licking County. I have promised myself the next time I get near the library, this is who I am looking for. I will keep your email address and let you know what I find.
