Mrs. Matilda Davis, 85, widow of Matt Davis, who passed away July 26,1930, joined him in death yesterday morning at her home in Janesville, where she had resided for 47 years, after a very brief illness, following a collapse due to the infirmities of advanced years. The venerable near nonagenarian was up and about active in the affairs of her home life until last Monday when she was stricken, death coming peacefully a day later. Mrs. Davis was born in Lee County, Iowa, August 22,1855, migrating to Lassen County with her husband whom she married in Texas, November 23, 1884. She was 29 years of age when she married and to the happy union came the following surviving children: Mrs. Clyde Garrett of Fallon, Nevada, Mrs. Blanche Decious of San Jose, B.L.Davis and Mrs. Irene Pierce, both of Janesville and Mrs. Winnie Hersey of Susanville. There are also surviving 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Tudie Fraser, 70, of Madera, the last survivor of a family of eight children. Mrs. Davis lived the longest, but all reached a ripe old age, ranging from the allotted span of 70-80 years. During the first World War, the deceased was unusally active in Red Cross work, doing her bit to clothe those "over there." On frequent occasions she walked the three miles from her ranch home in Janesville to join with others in Red Cross work, at the same time spending all spare time knitting for those on the battleline. She was a staunch Methodist and a Christian woman in word and deed; faithful to home and responsible for the rearing of a family, members of which are highly esteemed in the communities in which they reside. Services for Mrs. Davis will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Morrill chapel with Rev. Green of Janesville officiating. Burial will be in the Janesville cemetery. The pallbearers will be Frank Dimke, Cecil Bass, Emmett Bailey, George Bennett, Albert McMurphy and Jim Peterson.
