    1. [CALASSEN] Big Valley Gazette Obit Index
    2. Tim I. Purdy
    3. Well, it happened sooner than I thought. The Big Valley Gazette, Bieber, Lassen County 1907-1956 is now on line on the Lassen Co. Gen Web page. While Bieber a small town in northern Lassen Co. the paper published obituaries for those to its close neighbor in Modoc and also that of eastern Shasta. In addition, it published numerous obituaries of relatives to the residents of Big Valley, who never resided there and in many instances never visited. http://www.cagenweb.com/tp/lassen/ Tim

    1. [CALASSEN] Lassen Co. Correct URL
    2. Tim I. Purdy
    3. sorry about that folks here is the correct one: http://www.cagenweb.com/tp/lassen/ I should have the 1922 index up today or tomorrow. The Big Valley Gazette index 1907-1956 should be online the first part of next week. That one is real interesting since about 80% of the obituaries are for those who either died outside of Lassen County, former residents or relatives to county residents. Tim

    1. [CALASSEN] Matilda Davis 1855-1940
    2. Mrs. Matilda Davis, 85, widow of Matt Davis, who passed away July 26,1930, joined him in death yesterday morning at her home in Janesville, where she had resided for 47 years, after a very brief illness, following a collapse due to the infirmities of advanced years. The venerable near nonagenarian was up and about active in the affairs of her home life until last Monday when she was stricken, death coming peacefully a day later. Mrs. Davis was born in Lee County, Iowa, August 22,1855, migrating to Lassen County with her husband whom she married in Texas, November 23, 1884. She was 29 years of age when she married and to the happy union came the following surviving children: Mrs. Clyde Garrett of Fallon, Nevada, Mrs. Blanche Decious of San Jose, B.L.Davis and Mrs. Irene Pierce, both of Janesville and Mrs. Winnie Hersey of Susanville. There are also surviving 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Tudie Fraser, 70, of Madera, the last survivor of a family of eight children. Mrs. Davis lived the longest, but all reached a ripe old age, ranging from the allotted span of 70-80 years. During the first World War, the deceased was unusally active in Red Cross work, doing her bit to clothe those "over there." On frequent occasions she walked the three miles from her ranch home in Janesville to join with others in Red Cross work, at the same time spending all spare time knitting for those on the battleline. She was a staunch Methodist and a Christian woman in word and deed; faithful to home and responsible for the rearing of a family, members of which are highly esteemed in the communities in which they reside. Services for Mrs. Davis will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Morrill chapel with Rev. Green of Janesville officiating. Burial will be in the Janesville cemetery. The pallbearers will be Frank Dimke, Cecil Bass, Emmett Bailey, George Bennett, Albert McMurphy and Jim Peterson. 1. [CALASSEN] Re: Abram and Susan Carrie Blazier?
    2. I found an Abram Blazier and Susan Caroline Williams who were married in Lake County in 1867. I have a great deal of information on the Williams family and am glad to share it. Abram was a saloonkeeper in Kelsey City (now Kelsyville, CA) at the time of their marriage. Susan had not reached the age of majority in 1867. They left Lake County the same year, but the recorder in Lake County did not name the next County of voter registration. I have been trying to put pieces of this puzzle together for several years. Susan's siblings are Sarina (Rena), Francis, Eliza, William W. and John Thomas. Married names of her sisters include: Parks (Eliza), Goodrum, McClendon, Hensley, Johnson Susan's mother was Lucinda Hudspeth Williams. She married her father, James Madison Wlliams in Missouri in 1841. Lucinda died in San Joaquin County in 1862. It is possible she died of the consequences of childbirth with her infant son, David. The famliy moved to Lake sounty in aobut 1863-1864. Details in Lake County are sketchy because the courthouse burned in February of 1867. Most of the family (including Eliza) moved to Butte County in 1869, but I have not found any trace of Abram there. Does this sound compatible with your query??

    1. [CALASSEN] Re: marriage
    2. Maybe you can find a tie between Ardilla Covell Babcock and our Covell/Cook family -- William Albert Cook married Sally Covell 1845 in Bradford Co., PA. The clan came to California about 1869, though a few arrived earlier. William and Sally had a daughter named Ardilla who died young (in 1863), and I can imagine that a sibling or cousin of Sally's might have named a daughter after Ardilla. Among Sally's brothers were James (known to have lived around Hat Creek in the 1880s) and Parvin. Parents of Sally, James, Parvin, and others were James Covell (b. 1804 in New York) and Sally Dewey (b. 1800 in Vermont). I hope this helps...seems more than coincidence that a Covell would be given the name Ardilla.
