    3. Hi Michelle, Caught your note about the Toll Road on the CALAKE list a while back. There were several roads into Lake Co. from the Russian River Valley; I have noted a few of them on my page: http://home.pacbell.net/gardm/roads.htm Unfortunately, I'm no expert, just an interested bystander. There are two roads that I have some familiarity with but I don't know if they were toll roads; the only toll road I'm familiar with is the St. Helena Road. Many early roads started as toll roads franchised by the county with the condition that they be turned over to the county or state in 20-30 years. Whoa, I just re-read my page. It lists the Hopland Toll Road. This road, which, regrettably, I've never taken, cuts off Highway 175 (there is a web site which describes Calif. Highways, I must reference it if I can find it) just beyond Sanel (old Hopland). If I read my map correctly, it curves around Hopland mountain (avoiding 238 curves according to my uncle) and comes into Highland Springs where there was an old hotel. My cousin tells about seeing the hotel and the register totally abandoned but was admonished to "keep hands off, it ain't yours". I understand it is now underwater. It might also be the Pieta road. Take a look at the page; any additions or corrections appreciated. It links back to my genealogy page. The toll road is on my Thomas Bros. map book and the Lake Co. part is on Metsker's map of Lake Co. cheers, Gard Meddaugh in Mtn. View, Calif.
