    2. Here is the article and obits you requested for the following person: The Bakersfield Californian Wednesday, April 11, 1956 Front Page BOY, 12, WITNESS TO TRAGEDY Wild Shot Fired at Man Trying to Intervene A Shafter pool hall operator shot and killed his estranged wife at 8:30 a.m. today in the street at the Q and Espee streets intersection in Bakersfield, then turned the pistol on himself, firing a fatal shot through his head. The couple's 12-year-old boy witnessed the tragedy but was not harmed. Coroner Stanley Newman identified the couple as Celey Carl Hamlin, 45, and Kathryn Hamlin, 32. Edward J. Parr, 2110 Lake St., was working outside a welding shop across the street from the shooting and upon hearing two shots, saw Mrs. Hamlin slump to the street. He said he ran to where Hamlin was beating the dying woman on the head with the nickel-plated .25 caliber automatic and attempted to grab him. Hamlin swung around and fired a wild shot at Parr. "I let him go then," Barr said, "but chased him when he started to run north on Espee Street. I thought he was going to shoot at me again, but it looked like his gun jammed when he pointed it at me." "That's when he put the gun to his head and fired." The boy, Celey Jr., was taken to police headquarters and during questioning, said his parents had been separated about three months and that they "were always quarreling about money," The boy told Lt. Mary Holman he and his mother had been living in Shafter with Ernest and Vina Roux, relatives of Mrs. Hamlin, but had moved to Bakersfield last night "somewhere around 34th and Q streets." The two were walking from their lodging this morning along Espee Street on the way to Hawthorne School where Mrs. Hamlin intended to enroll her son. Hamlin, who apparently had traced his wife's movements since moving here last night ran from behind the two and upon coming abreast, fired point blank at the woman. As she fell he began striking her on the head with the small-caliber pistol, then fired another shot into her body. Asst. Police Chief Charles Dodge said Hamlin operated the Shafter Recreation, a pool room in that city, for the past few months after moving from Torrance. Last night he moved into an apartment in the 2500 block of K Street where his mother, Mrs. A. W. Crow, resides. The bodies were removed to Hopson Mortuary. Dodge said examination of Mrs. Hamlin's body revealed three bullet wounds, two in the back and one in the neck. Powder burns were found on the victim's pearl gray coat next to the bullet holes. Hamlin shot himself just above the left eye. Coroner Newman said he would hold an informal inquest buy termed it "open and shut." ------------------------- HAMLIN CATHRYNE born: 02/26/1924 F OKLAHOMA mother: SUMMERS father: JACKSON died: KERN 04/11/1956 articles on the murder/suicide age: 32 yrs requested by: tuleroots@sbcglobal.net Tulare Gen.
