If you were traveling from Lancaster to Rosamond on Thursday late afternoon of last week, you noticed 50 cars pulling off the highway and stopping and their drivers walking out into the field west of Highway 6. If this aroused your curiosity and has bothered you since perhaps we can solve your dilema now. The people were walking out to view a crater: 15 feet deep, 30 feet long and 20 feet wide which had been blown out of the ground by the crashing of a “Sky Warrior" bomber which had crashed in flames in this fortunately forsaken spot. Witnesses said that the big plane was screaming and whistling over the valley at an altitude of 200 feet when it exploded in fire and hurtled without warning to the earth, Both the pilot, Wm. Herbert Davis, Jr., and research engineer, Willard Amick were instantly killed. Davis, a World War II combat pilot, came to Douglas in 1945. He resided with his wife and three children .in Lancaster. Amick, a bachelor: resided in Westwood. Posted by East Kern Genealogical Society Courtesy of Mojave Desert News California City, Kern, CA Published: 03 Nov 1955
