He was 89. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 16 at 10 am at Immanuel Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Logan will officiate. Burial will be at Rosedale Memorial Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. Slate was born June 3, 1915 in Hart, Mich. He graduated from Hart High School and served in the US Army Signal Corps as a radar operator from January 1942 to December 1945. He worked as a machine shop operator, retiring in 1990. He moved to Ridgecrest from Wyoming, Mich. in 1997. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ridgecrest and a volunteer at the Salvation Army Food Bank. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law John and Ruth Slate of Ridgecrest, only grandchild Joseph Slate of Ridgecrest, son James Slate of Chicago, Ill., brother Herbert Slate of Pentwater, Mich. and sister Dorothy Avery of Hart, Mich.
