He was 72. A memorial services will be held Friday April 15 at 2 pm at Holland & Lyons Chapel. The Rev. Mark Q. Rowland pastor of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate. Mr. Smith was born July 3, 1932 in Belmont, Ill. to George and Villa Smith. He was reared by his mother and grew up in Illinois. He moved to Independence in the 1950s to be closer to his father George, and later moved to Bishop. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1956. He owned and operated a Bishop Roller Skater's Rink in the 1960s and was an avid skater into his 30s. He worked as an equipment operator for various companies, retiring in 1994. He was a retired member of Operating Engineers Local 12 as an equipment operator in Bishop and Ridgecrest. He truly enjoyed retirement, fishing and drinking coffee with his friends. He will be greatly missed by family and was a good friend to many. He was preceded in death by his son Doug Smith and companion of 13 years Helen Strother. He is survived by two daughters Linda Curtis of Virginia Beach, Va. and Karen Ronnow of Tinton Falls, N.J., ason Kevin Smith of Montrose, Colo. and two grandchildren.
