MC ARTOR 1923-2005 Longtime Ridgecrest resident Robert "Bob" M. McArtor passed away Monday April 25, 2005 at Ridgecrest Healthcare. He was 81. Visitation will be at Holland & Lyons Chapel Wednesday April 27 from 5 to 7 pm. A rosary will be said at 6:30 pm. Funeral services will be Thursday April 28 at 9 am at St. Ann Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Montebello. Mr. McArtor was born Nov. 2, 1923 in Crooksville, Ohio to Samuel Tilden and Nancy Stein McArtor. His family moved to Columbus, Ohio when he was 8 years old. He attened Franklin Elementary School and graduated from Bexley High School in 1942. Shortly after graduation he was drafted into the Army. He was assigned to the 348th Quartermaster Corps and went onto the Normandy Beaches on D-3. He served in the European Theater of War for three years and was awarded five battle stars. Upon his return home he spent one quarter at Ohio State University then went to work at the Columbus General Depot. In 1948 he met his wife Marie Chapman and the couple married April 30, 1949 in Warren, Ohio. He entered a local watchmaker's school and graudated 18 months later. Their eldest son Robert Paul was born in 1950 and second son Michael in 1951. In December 1951 the family relocated to California joining Marie's parents who had moved there earlier in the year. He worked for Consolidated Engineering for approximately a year before being hired at NOTS, China Lake in 1952. Two more sons were born to them, Stephen in 1955 and Jonathan in 1957. In 1959 Mr. McArtor was accepted into the Apprentice Training Program and graduated in 1961 with an Associate of Science degree in electronics. He was selected Apprentice of the Year at the end of his first year in the program. He retired in 1980 as an electronic technician. From 1974 until 1984 the McArtor's operated a small vending company spread over a 1,200 mile route. They serviced it on weekends doing a different portion each week. He was deeply interested in genealogy and spent may hours searching for family records. He and marie traveled over much of the US meeting near and distant relatives in their search for family information. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Scott. He is survived by his wife Marie, son Robert Paul of Sparks, Nev., son Stephen of Ridgecrest, son Jonathan and wife Denise of Ridgecrest, grandson Nathan of Ridgecrest, granddaughter Stefanie and husband Justin Taylor of Lebanon, Ore., grandson Michael Fuller of Ridgecrest, great-granddaughter Brooklyn Cheyenne of Lebanon, Ore. and many, many friends all of whom appreciated him even through he was cantankerous at times.
