Mr. Brooks was born February 29, 1920, in Redfield, Arkansas, and lived in California City for the last eight years. He previously lived in Los Angeles, Seattle, Fresno, and St. Louis. He is survived by his wife Jean Widman-Brooks of California City, son Lejon Stevens Brooks of Fresno, stepsons Obie Patterson of Lancaster, Paul Widman of Bothell, Washington; Patrick Hall of Everett, Washington; cousins and friends Helen Rutherford and Lilly May Smith of St. Louis, and his former wife Nell Brooks of Fresno. Steve was a member of the Desert Jade Villas Poker Club. He worked for railroads laying track through most of the western states, and began work in the fields as a cotton picker at age six. He served in the U.S. Army as a Ranger, with 91 parachute jumps and became a drill sergeant. No services will be held. Mr. Brooks donated his remains for research to the University of California at Irvine where he is on his last adventure instructing second year medical students.
