AFFTC – The body of Billy Ray Tyree, 3, son of Airman and Mrs. Arnold Tyree was found at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, January 1 after a futile all night search by over 1,000 airmen and civilians of E.A.F.B. Young Billy, only son of the Arnolds had wandered away from quarters occupied by Tech Sgt. and Mrs. Israel Vallencourt where the Arnolds were visiting on Monday afternoon. When found, a cocker spaniel dog was keeping vigil beside the body which apparently had been unable to stand the frigid 280 weather. . Actual discovery of the body was made by Major Jones P. Siegler, piloting a chopper, one of four used in the search. Two choppers from El Toro, one from Mojave and one from Edwards were used as well as two conventional type ships. All New Year's Eve parties were cancelled and General J. S. Holtoner ordered all leaves for personnel cancelled when he learned the airman's son was missing. Civilian members of a large orchestra which was going to play at a huge party, donned work: clothes and joined in the search. Clad only in a tee shirt and jeans, the body was found two miles from the Vallencourt residence and one mile southeast of the corner of Forbes and Rosamond Blvd. Taken to Edwards Air Force Base hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The boy's father, stationed at Pleasanton Base, started to hitchhike back to Edwards to be with his wife, Jean who was kept under sedatives by Air Force doctors. Chaplain Lyman T. Barger consoled the grief stricken mother until her husband arrived. Posted by East Kern Genealogical Society Courtesy Mojave Desert News, California City, Kern, CA. Published: 03 Jan 1957
