It's June -- the month of graduations, weddings and JAMBOREE! We have been working on this event since last July, and it's hard to believe that it is now only a few days away. Thanks to all of our speakers and exhibitors for the fantastic support they have shown by helping us publicize this event. George G. Morgan's June 1 blog entry http://ahaseminars.livejournal.com/ has a great summary of the presentations and podcast schedule that he and Drew Smith will be following while they are here. -------------------- Here's a rundown of the Jamboree-related activities: Saturday, June 2 - Stuffing Party at SCGS Library, 417 Irving Drive, from 9am to whenever we finish. Please come help us get the registration packets ready for Jamboree and the Family History Writers Conference. Thursday, June 7 - Move-out to the Marriott Hotel. We need drivers with pickup trucks and lots of help to load and unload the boxes, computers, reference materials, signs, things to sell, etc. Please meet at the SCGS Library Thursday at 1pm. We also need help packing up and moving back to the Library on Sunday beginning at 3pm. Friday through Sunday, June 8-10 - Jamboree. What more can we say? -Lectures by more than 30 outstanding speakers. -Over 120 door prizes, with a grand-prize week's stay in Salt Lake City plus $200 air fare and Free . -Many of the largest exhibitors providing information and services to genealogists and family historians. -Special emphasis on the use of DNA in genealogy. -Ethnic focus, including Creole Heritage, German, British, other specialties -Websites, computer programs, technical assistance. -One-on-one consultation at our State Tables and from the many genealogical and lineage societies -Used book sale -Book Nook with author book signings. -Tech Zone with free access to Ancestry's Library Edition, Heritage Quest, Historical LA Times and other databases from Proquest's suite of services for genealogy. -Banquets amd breakfasts. -"Google Me" documentary film makers will be on hand to add some razzle-dazzle to Jamboree. -And the Zydeco La-La Dance with Bennie and the Swamp Gators. Tickets are still available for this exceptional event. Small class sizes to assure individual attention during the lectures, panel discussions, and workshops. --------------------- In addition to our Jamboree activities, we have many other events on the calendar. Tuesday, June 5 - Writers Group Monday, June 11 - Legacy Software Users Group Sunday, June 24 - Writers Group Sunday, June 24 - Family Tree Maker Software Users Group Saturday, June 30 - DNA Interest Group. Basic DNA and Its Connection to Genealogy by Cheri Mello, Azores DNA Project Co-Administrator. The presentation will focus on how to find a DNA participant that is not on one of the direct DNA lines. Cheri will explain how DNA results knocked down a brick wall that had been up since the 1950s. Individualized help will be available after the formal presentation for those who want to order DNA tests or who have received DNA results and need help. Saturday, July 14 - Volunteer Luncheon Sunday, July 15 - Membership Open House. It's a great time to stop in to visit us at the Library. Learn all about the many activities and interest groups, projects and programs offered by the Southern California Genealogical Society. Hours 11am - 3pm. ----------------------- Have you submitted your surnames to the Virtual Surname Wall? This new project of SCGS's promises to be a big success, gathering more than 4,000 surname entries within the first week. Mentions in Rootsweb Review, Dick Eastman's blog, and Leland Meitzler's Genealogy Blog, among other sites, helped to boost awareness of this new initiative. It's not too late to submit your names. The more places you have your genealogical information stored, the more likely you will be to survive a computer crash or other disaster.
