My grandfather was born in Soquel, Santa Crus Co CA and then made his way to Rough N Ready CA during the gold rush where he met and married my grandmother (a Bagley). Do you have any ancestors in Northern California? I am having a difficult time tracing my family backwards, and have no idea how and why they ended up in California.
