He was originally from Indiana and was. 81 years old on his last birthday, January 27, 1953. Bert came to this area in 1902 for his health and prospected Soledad Mountain and Standard Hill as well as other likely spots. He was president of the Yellow Dog Mining Co. and interested in many other mines. Bert was extremely proud of the fact that he had voted in every Mojave election for the last half century and was noted for his fine sense of humor. He was a dyed.in-the-wool bachelor, having never been married. He had been staying at his cabin in the Piutes near the Garringer Bros. place up to last Saturday night, when he took a turn for the worst. Because one of the Garringer brothers had heart trouble, they had a supply of oxygen on hand without which he would have passed away that night. They called for help and notified a sister in Whittier, who came to Mojave. Bill Pajanew and two other people brought him down to Mojave to meet the sister and he was taken back to Whittier Sunday morning. Funeral services were held in the White and Emerson Mortuary in Whittier at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eva Hall and Mrs. Mabel Engle, also a nephew, Kenneth Hall. We are indebted to Mrs. Louie Miehle for the above information.
