DORRELL 1933-2005 Former Ridgecrest resident and China Laker James L. Dorrell passed away at Shasta Regional Medical Center on Dec. 26, 2004 due to complications from liver cancer. He was 71. Northern California services for Mr. Dorrell were held at the Neighborhood Church of Redding, 777 Loma Vista Drive on Jan. 15, 2005 at 10 am. Pastor Dave Hall officiated. Mr. Dorrell was born July 28, 1933 in alhambra and grew up in the California communities of Gorman, Gerber, West Proberta and Red Bluff. He attended a one room school house while living in Proberta and graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1950. After graduating high school her served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954 as an aviation armament mechanic and graduated from American River College in 1962. During his career he worked on projects supporting the Titan and Minuteman missile projects, the Gemini and Apollo programs and various Department of Defense programs. He was the recipeint of many awards and commendations for his contributions to research and development at China Lake including the Naval Weapons Center Technical Director's Award and the Naval Weapons Center Commander's Award. While employed at Computer Technology Associatioes he was honored with the Author Award. His hobbies included gardening, fishing and the study of ancient civilizations. His intense interest in history led him to study the Bible, and specifically the Old Testament. As he continued to study the Bible and in his ords "..read through Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus I began to kno the holiness of God and became convinced of my personal sin. And out there in the loneliness of the desert I accepted God to be the path of my life. "There in the predawn light amid God's glorious creation of an earthly cathedral I gave myself to Christ and asked him to lead me to the Father and the Holy Spirit. Without question I had received a spiritual baptism brought about through my acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ and God's word." Mr. Dorrell belonged to the Shasta Rose Society, the Redding Elks Lodge and RV Club, Redding Roadrunners RV club and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years JoAnn Dorrell in 1997. He is survived by his son Loren Dorrell and wife Sandy of Ridgecrest, son Martin Dorrell and wife Natalie of Ridgecrest, daughter Karyn Shirley of Gardnerville, Nev., sister Maxine Cambra of Andersen, grandchildren Amberly Dorrell, Michael Dorrell, Justin Dorrell, Stephen Dorrell, and Alan Perez and wife of five years Janey Dorrell of Redding.
