Mrs. Juanita Ellen Smith and baby son Rodney died in an accident on October 24 at 6:00 A.M. in Red Rock Canyon 26 miles north of Mojave. Her husband Warren Smith suffered a broken leg and was taken to the Mojave Hospital by the O'Donnell ambulance. The accident to the Virginia City, Nevada family was caused by mechanical failure and high speed, according to Highway Patrol officer Russell Troxler. A second accident claimed a third life when a 1929 Model A Ford driven by Lucius Rogers 20, of Odessa, Tex. was rammed into from the rear by a 1951 Mercury driven by Joe Galvan of Mojave. Edsel Brown of Ft. Worth, Tex., a passenger in the Ford, died as a result of the collision and Rogers is still in the Mojave hospital seriously injured and suffering loss of memory. Scene of the mishap was 9½ miles south of Mojave on Highway 6 at 10:45 P.M. on October 24. Joe Galvan, driver of the Mercury, claimed the older car did not have a visible tail light. He and his passenger, Brigado M. Toftodo, sustained minor injuries which were treated at Mojave Hospital. Coronor's inquest investigating this accident was held Monday at noon. It was stated that a blood sample had been sent to a Bakersfield laboratory to determine the alcohol content. Outcome of . the inquest depends on the lab report. A 1949 Cadillac driven by Murray Joseph O’Toole rolled, over 1½ miles north of the Edwards main gate on a curve. Injured were Richard Austin Roehe, Maurice Hall Young and George Murnich all employed at Edwards. All were treated at the Base Hospital. The driver apparently lost; control according to investigating officer Russ Troxler. A car stolen from Manuel Holquin, who lives at Cammeron Section, was involved in a rear end collision at 12:32 A:M. on October 28, 10 miles west of Mojave on Highway 466. Driver of the other car, Albert Edward Hornberger of P.O. Box, 371, Tehachapi, Calif. claimed the other driver did not signal for a left turn. At any rate the unknown driver was gone when investigating officer Russ Troxler arrived on the scene. There were no injuries.
